When it crashes, I see something along these lines in the log folder:

After installing the game (I have the original DVD release I was able to procure from a store recently, and yes it is the US version), I installed the 1.02 patch, the Bring down the Sky DLC linked on this forum, and downloaded and installed the Pinnacle Station DLC from Origin.  It occurs roughly 20 or so minutes into any play session, and as a result is really distracting.  I also installed DirectX 9.0 files manually, and attempted running the game's executable (not just the launcher) in admin mode and in compatibility mode, to no avail.

I have 4 GB of RAM on Windows 7 Pro with an Intel duel core 3.0 GHz processor.
I have an NVidia Geforce GT 430 video card (before anyone says this isn't enough, this actually runs surprisingly well and I'm running the game on max stats with no frame rate issues, as well as Dragon Age 2 for that matter, the "30" really isn't as bad as one might think if other bottle necks are eliminated).
I have a Creative X-Fi PCI-e card and have used the .ini file tweak to make sure Mass Effect uses hardware mode.  It sounds great.
My system has all the latest updates and my drivers are also all up to date.  I run a VERY tight system setup and don't allow much if any 3rd party processes to run in the background during computer startup (I use system internal's autoruns a lot of the time for example to clear out things like the Adobe Reader Speed Launcher).  In fact the only extra process I allow is my antivirus, Microsoft Security Essentials, and my various driver programs like the NVidia manager and Creative Alchemy.  The rest are left in a disabled state until needed.

To drive it home, my system is otherwise very stable, most games running perfectly fine without any crashing incidents once they are properly configured.

I hope this clarifies what I've already done.  If anyone has any further advice, I'm certainly looking for help.  Thank you in advance.  I'd love to play through the saga and be ready when ME3 comes along.  The game is great, but this crashing is really putting me off playing it.

First thing I would suggest is rolling back your video drivers to the initial release drivers of 260.xx.
Nvidia has a really bad track record of supporting games more than 1 year old with its drivers, and ME1, being 4 years old, has been left out in the cold.
Mid 2010 drivers seem to be the last known, stable drivers taht will work with ME1/ME2, so I would suggest giving those a try first.

You could also try turning down the video settings, as well as downloadnig a temperature monitoring program such as Speedfan to keep an eye on your tempswhile you are playing the game.

Note: The GT430 was never designed, nor promoted as a gaming card. Add into this the fact that ME1's use of the Unreal3 engine was not as streamlined as it could have been (which is why ME2 runs better), and you could be pushing the card beyond its operational limits, causing it to overheat and crash.

The 430's working just fine. It certainly doesn't have all those shaders for business reasons, and I'm sure the temp's good. I'm starting to think this whole "the 30 lines are always terrible" thing isn't true any more, if it was at one time. Every game I have, and they are current ones, seem to work perfectly fine. I'm sure a higher end model would do even better, but contrary to what 3DMax reviews would say, this is doing a LOT better than my old pair of 6800s. Considering Dragon Age II is running perfectly stably on this thing (as well as every other game I got working here), I don't think it's a possibility even worth humoring.

NVidia not supporting older games as well is a problem... I did get KOTOR 1 and 2 working though. Generally I can keep older games working for a long long time. I will try an older driver revision though and report back.

What of the actual log though? It seems to be saying certain files can't be found. Is that common?

Rough guess, is the "not found" errors are due to the game engine crashing, and because it crashed, it cannot find the resources listed in the bioengine.ini or biogame.ini

Thank you. That gave me an idea for a test.

I opened the game, played for a bit, and successfully quit before the game crashed. After checking the new log file, the same errors seem to be appearing.

I wonder if Bioware is considering another patch for the game to make it play nice with Windows 7? It'd be a good move with the 3rd game in the series coming out, as it would allow them to more easily release a special "trilogy box set".

When they went ahead and let the PS3 owners in the game world for ME2, they never re-compiled ME-1 to give those folks any copy of ME-1 for themselves, so it's my opinion that there won't be any material changes, even if they do someday bundle all three.

AFAIK, there was nothing done to update NWN when the recent resale of that one along with expansions and NWN2 were bundled.

I'm not really asking for content, just some fixes to make it work better on an OS that isn't 11 years out of date.

Are you running the game in xp compatibility mode and is it SP2 or 3, some have found luck running it in SP2 compatibility.

Sorry for the delay, I only just recently had a chance to try these fixes.  I've attempted those fixes and a few more, and it's still crashing.

I'll present the latest log:

Here's a screen grab from the last crash.

https://picasaweb.go...feat=directlink

I'm going to attempt to simply reinstall Mass Effect again, though I am unsure this will have any effect as my drive is functioning fine.  I will also attempt to disable EAX through Creative Alchemy to see if that is somehow interfering, though it hasn't been a problem with other games.

There is another thread on here about crashing and the XFI soundblaster. Try reading it and see the tweak that fixed it for the person there.

My X-Fi has been in Game mode since I set it up, so that's not it. Also, my crashes aren't the same as the one described in the thread. I don't get any "blue screen". It was in "hardware" mode, with the tweak in the .ini file I read in another thread to force it to use it correctly. However, I just tried playing after switching the game to "software" audio, and while I can't be sure just yet, the game didn't crash after a nice long session. However, the .log file still shows a number of the same error messages so I may have just been lucky. Further, while in "software" audio mode, there's some "popping" and static as though the audio can't quite keep up, so even if this is working, it's only a temporary solution.

Again I've not had much opportunity to experiment. Today I re installed the game completely and re enabled hardware accelerated sound. I reinstalled the DLC and the patch to version 1.02. I also went through the extra step of adding Mass Effect to Creative ALchemy. The sound is no longer popping, and it hasn't crashed yet. Again, I have yet to play for an extended period of time. I am also still getting these errors in the game's log.

Any advice would be appreciated. If anyone could fill me in on the specific details behind these error codes that would be VERY helpful as well. Thank you in advance.

The GZLib error is still occuring, and the game is still crashing. This hasn't fixed the problem.

I'm getting ready to give up on the whole series. After all, if I can't play the first, even if the other two are amazing, I can't imagine jumping into the story midway.

After searching online, there are others receiving identical or similar gzlib "file not found" errors, both in the Steam versions and in the DVD version. There is another thread that went without an answer in this very forum.

I should specify a few things. My current Nvidia drivers are 295.51. My current Creative X-Fi drivers are 2.17.0008 . I'm using "Generic" drivers for just about everything else as they seem to function best.

I really would appreciate any help at all. This issue has made my purchase of this game a complete waste of money. I WANT to play this game, I WANT to love it, but I'll have to call off buying the entire series if I can't get the first one working.

1. If you want to play the game with current drivers, you must give up on nVIDIA. They made the choice not to support Mass Effect. Radeons work fine with recent drivers.

2. Has the thermal environment come up? Some of your comments have been so long, and I just haven't read everything in them lately, I don't think.

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate the input. Overheating has been ruled out. I have measured the temp and it appears to be fine. Further, the frame rates are really nice in the game, even at max settings, so it does not appear that this is the issue. I should also bring up that all my other games that work in XP/7, both newer (The Witcher, Dragon Age 2) and older (Oblivion, Neverwinter Nights) are working correctly as well without crashing.

I have attempted running with older drivers, and the same issue occurred. I believe that it's a myth that the drivers dropped support for Mass Effect, as the configuration tool shows profiles for Mass Effect (as well as numerous games of much older vintage) in them. Further, there are others online using NVidia cards with modern drivers who aren't experiencing this issue. I believe pursuing that path further is a dead end now.

I will add one other note to explain my setup a little more clearly.  Whenever I attempt a trial fix, if that doesn't resolve the issue, I undo what I attempted, to return it to the initial state and not "clutter up" the game or my computer's settings with unneeded changes.  I do this to prevent creating more complications.  However, if someone has good reason to believe this issue is the result of multiple issues interacting in an unusual way, I will make the suggested number of changes simultaneously (and then revert them all if that does not resolve it).

I am now attempting to lower the number of simultaneous voices from 128 to 64 in the config file.

Again, I really do appreciate the responses so far. At this point the most valuable response I could get would be specific definitions of the error codes I listed above. That is likely the only way I will be able to narrow down this issue.

So far, lowering the "voices" the sound card can create in the bioengine file seems to be doing the trick. I'll need to play longer to be sure, but so far so good. I can take a break from Kirby's Return to Dreamland now.

Now I'll try applying that fix for Garus's low rez face.
