Does it really matter? Almost every major game that is released every year gets at least one GOTY. There's so many of them.

I just assume people are talking about the DICE awards when they mention GOTY They're the most legitimate, considering they're chosen by the devs.

This and BioShock Infinite most likely, if GTA V comes out this year (which is very unlikely) there's not much hope, but it could literally be a copy and paste GTA III w/ an upgraded engine and it would still win GOTY.

It will probably be MY GOTY....but with GTAV, like others have said, it probably won't. It wouldn't matter anyways, I would still be playing the game.

Not sure why everyone automatically assumes GTAV will be GOTY. IV had lots of post-release-hype criticism and in retrospection is not considered to have been worthy of a GOTY by many fans. Even the gaming press acknowledges the scores were too high. If anything, Rockstar will have to ACTUALLY make GTAV a near-perfect game to get that GOTY status.
IMO the 2012 GOTY status will be taken by either BioShock Infinite, Tomb Raider or Mass Effect 3.

Depending on how it's executed, it might be GOTY for me, but I have a feeling Infinite will steal the show.

It'll get a "Something of the Year" award. Not sure if I see "Game of the Year" in it's future though. The GTA fanboyism is far reaching and GTA V is coming out this year.

On Topic:
I think it has a good chance, depending how good the Starcraft-expansion and Diablo 3 is - and if I know Blizzard they will be fenomenal. ME2 beat SC2 in 2010 though. I sure hope it wins GotY, I know it eill deserve it.
GTA V seems to have some hype already, I've seen the graphics and what I've seen is good as hell for being a GTA, but that can also be said of GTA IV. Haven't heard anything else though.

Only GOTY that matters to me is my own and it's really the only game I know for sure that's coming out this year that I'm excited for. Well ME3 and Operation raccoon city anyway. So it'll probably get mine but from the gamespots and igns? Probably not. Gotta remember there's a COD every year now so that'll probably get IGNs. Couldn't care less about their biases opinion
