Hello all! I have some questions that I have been mulling over recently. Maybe someone can help me out....

What did everyone in Thedas really know about the origins and nature of the darkspawn during the First Blight? How was the connection between the darkspawn and the old gods / archdemons first made?

Did the first Grey Wardens know anything about the darkspawn and the archdemons? How did they figure out that they had to drink darkspawn taint that had been magically treated with lyrium? (On that note, I keep hearing that a drop of blood from an archdemon is required in the Joining ritual. Is this correct, and if so, where did the first Grey Wardens get archdemon blood from?) Was it pure luck that a Grey Warden happened to slay Dumat, the first archdemon, thereby preventing it from being reborn in another darkspawn, or did the Wardens somehow know what needed to be done?

I also have a question on a completely different topic. On the Dragon Age Wiki article about the Grey Wardens (http://dragonage.wik...ki/Grey_Wardens), in the section about the Second Blight, it says that the Grey Wardens converted to the Chantry. What, exactly, does this mean? Are the Grey Wardens more or less forced to believe in Andraste and the Chant of Light (at least publicly)? This would not make much sense to me, given that fact that both dwarves and dalish elves are allowed to join the order, and these groups do not believe in Andraste at all. Furthermore, even if the order does *publicly* swear allegiance to the Chantry (regardless of the private beliefs of its members), to "which Chantry" does it do so? To the Chantry in Orlais or the one in Tevinter?

Sorry if I wrote too much. I just had all these questions bouncing around in my head and bothering me. Thanks for reading!

The connection was made between Darkspawn and Old Gods because the Old God Dumat was the one that convinced the Tevinter Magisters to enter the golden city, promising them it would be a golden paradise this much has been confirmed in Dragon Age: Legacy. Dumat and the old gods at that time were apparently already imprisoned underground at that point.. Apparently by the maker but its not certain.

The Grey Wardens probably learned what they knew about the Old Gods and Darkspawn from the Tevinter Magisters who were apparently the first Darkspawn and had contacted the old gods, the grey wardens had one.. maybe more as prisoner(s)

It hasn't been revealed how the wardens discovered the ritual as to how to become grey wardens, they got the archdemon blood from killing the archdemon dumat however.. This didn't end the blight but he had been killed a few times and reincarnated since only a grey warden can kill an Archdemon.. So they could kill him and collect his blood but he would keep reincarnating and was essentially immortal until a grey warden killed him since the archdemon reincarnates by entering a darkspawn which is a soulless creature, Grey Wardens can be mistaken to be darkspawn due to the tainted blood in them but since they are not soulless the archdemon entering their body causes them both to be destroyed. So yeah Dumat was slain a few times before the grey wardens were founded.

The Grey Wardens converted to the chantry since Emperor Kordillus Drakon I, the chantrys founder ending up saving the grey warden order from the brink of destruction when he lifted a massive darkspawn siege on their main fortress of Weisshaupt. As thanks for saving the order they helped spread the chant and the chantrys views to northern thedas.

The Wardens swore themselves to Emperor Drakons chantry which would be Orlais's which is made even more likely since the wardens control the anderfels unofficially since its king is weak, and The Tevinter Imperium has gone to war with and attempted to reclaim the anderfels which they once owned one or maybe a few times.. As a result I can see tensions between the First warden(s) the leader of the wardens and the Tevinter Imperium.. It hasn't been officially confirmed to which they are loyal to now but the Orlesian chantry is more likely

Thanks for your response!

Hmmm, I had not considered that Dumat might have been "slain" and reincarnated several times before being finally "terminated" by an actual Grey Warden. That would certainly explain why the First Blight went on for so long (I believe it last for two centuries - far longer than any other Blight): Dumat was killed over and over and over again until finally the Joining ritual was discovered and the Grey Wardens were founded.

As far the Chantry and the Grey Wardens goes, it is my understanding that Emperor Drakon founded the "original" Chantry - when it was one unified organization throughout all of Thedas - at the beginning of the Divine Age. It was later during the Towers Age that the Chantry split between that in Orlais (with the female White Divine) and the one in Tevinter (with the male Black Divine). According to the wiki, the Grey Wardens swore fealty to Drakon's original unified Chantry. So, I still think that it is a mystery as to what the effects of the Chantry's split were among the Grey Wardens. Do some Grey Wardens follow the White Divine in Orlais and others the Black Divine in Tevinter?

I think it would be a case that "officially" the Grey Wardens are loyal to the Orlais Chantry. They seem to have strong links there and a lot of structures seem to have been given to Orlaisian nobles and such like when the Wardens no longer wanted them. Since the main headquarters is in the Anderfels and that nation are described as the most devout in Thedas, with a huge statue of Andraste carved out of rock, it is fairly understandable that the organisation as a whole would be alined this way. However, I am sure that so long as they remain loyal to the Grey Wardens, individual wardens are allowed a fair bit of latitude with regard to how they worship in private. After all the wardens don't keep chantry rules on blood magic that strictly and take in renegades like Anders - although his short story does suggest that the Grey Warden leadership did a deal with the templars so they could keep an eye on him. Essentially the wardens do whatever it takes to do the job and so long as they don't mess too much with other country's politics, people are happy to let them get on with it.
