Hi everyone… a quick update:

Earlier today we had a person named Dmex start posting in the Origin thread claiming to be an EA employee who answered questions and discussed Origin.

When I learned of this person claiming to be an EA employee, I began an investigation.  We take people claiming to be staff posting to the public very seriously as we want to make sure those claiming to work for BioWare or EA actually are employees.  This individual did not show up in EA Employee lists, nor were standard EA procedures for staff postings used. When in doubt our standard practice is to err on the side of caution in an effort to prevent folks from being mislead….so we have temporarily banned the account until we are sure of all the details.

After further research I can now confirm that Dmex is an external contractor who is working with the EA Origin team on security issues.  We are working with his management to further clarify his working relationship with EA,  and hope to resolve this soon.

So why would you ban someone who is helping give us answers, I hope nothing bad happens to said individual because their assistance in answering questions is appreciated at any level (although I didn't see the individual's posts).

Do people here really believe that, either before or after the launch of ME3, an open source Origin client will be released, with EA's support? I'm honestly curious. :)

Thanks. But seeing that the news came from someone whose background is being verified, I'll wait and see.

* Will it be possible to play older games (e.g. Mass Effect 2 which is already installed on my computer) without Origin, after I installed Origin on my computer and Origin finds these games?

I can answer that one as I have Origin installed and I have ME1 and both Dragon Age games on Steam. That answer is yes. ME1 and both DA games work just fine without Origin running. Even Mass Effect 2, which I have on Origin runs fine with Origin turned off. This is the behavior I expect for Mass Effect 3 unless I am playing the MP portion of the game.

This a person who is working for Electronic Arts on the official Origin Client who offered honest, reasonable answers in this thread and not some twisted marketing droid rubbish (not refering to Chris Priestly).
What I find interesting is not only he got banned but his statements (mostly of technical nature) were dismissed as not valid.
I don't expect him to post here ever again one way or another, sad. :?

Sorry folks, dmex is not an EA employee and what he claims is not valid.

LOL! The plot thickens. The audience feels cheated and boo at the thread. Will there be any more twists to this story? Will Origin be the reviled platform hated by players everywhere? Is redemption... lost?!?

I'll wait in anticipation for further developments. Let me get my popcorn...

Although evidence is pointing to the contrary at present (you need to have the Origin client running most likely at this stage, even for single player, however only in offline mode). If it indeed operates in the same manner as past games or games like Alice, we won't have an issue, but that seems unlikely and I'm still waiting on Chris to confirm/deny.

Not to pile on, but I have to point out the irony... rather than misleading customers, this guy is the ONLY one actually having an open and honest dialogue with us about exactly what Origin does... and he got banned.  Beautiful.

Yeah he was actually able to cut through some of the corporate nonsense and provide some godwill for Origin. But I suppose making sense is not allowed according to the corporate manual. ;-)

Even though I don't agree with what Dmex did. I do agree that having people post here from the Dev team whether they be external contractors, devs on a project based contract, or fulltime employees is welcome and needed.

The mods here while friendly seem to be severely lacking technical knowledge.

Possible, they have rules for such things, hopefully the individual doesn't get in trouble for answering our Qs.

Having worked in a similar type environment I can almost guarantee he will.

Who knows how secret this OpenOrgin project is that he kept blabbering about. If EA hasn't released a press release for it maybe they wanted to keep it under wraps from valve.

I find this an acceptable answer, if you look all other EA employess on this forum use there real name so it may have caused some alarm bells.  Plus there may have been a communication gaff here also as it would have been proper to let the Administrators know you were going to answer questions on the site so they can upgrade your forum account to show you are indeed a member of EA in some form.

Also what is dev doing sending patches to endusers bypassing EA's tiered tech support.

Methinks he is going to be looking for a job by days end or at the very least be put on probation.

In one of dmex's posts in the EA forums, on the 5th of this month, he stated that he was not a member of the official Origin client team.  I don't really know what to believe at this point it's all just too dodgy (or just standard EA customer service).

Edit - Here's a copy paste of the section where dmex states this.

I had only just started looking into the issue
when I posted my last comment, I firstly wanted to reassure you and
anyone else that Cloud sync problems don't affect your games progress
or stats as you suggested. I couldn't say we're looking into the
problem when I had yet even confirmed a problem exists (also since I
don't report or work for the Origin team)
, It could have been a problem
with your machine or ISP and reporting that we're looking into it
doesn't really help you in that situation and as such I wanted to be
sure before making such statement.

(my bolding in the quote)

I think it's an acceptable answer as well. There's a big difference between advertising yourself as "an employee of EA" and having the status of an "outside contractor". At the companies I've worked for, that's quite a big distinction and all "outside contractors" were required to have a "visitor's badge" while working in the building to differentiate themselves from actual employees.

If he had made that distinction, alot of this could have been avoided. Can't blame Chris for checking the employee rouster and not finding him there -- he's not an employee of EA if he is, in fact, an outside contractor.  At least on this forum, he did not make that clear.

Except you know actually having worked on a Dev team and worked tiered support.

Our customer base was corperate so the standards were likely higher but you see the end result of dmex answers it makes EA look dissorganized and their customers suspicous and confused. I'm sure that's not what EA was looking for.

Well, it wouldn't surprise me, unfortunately. If you don't tow the company line and you work for the company in some capacity, you're probably going to be in some trouble.

I hope not, but that's my guess.
