Well well. Developments. Hilarious developments, for sure. Hopeful developments, maybe?

I'm still incredibly displeased with this whole disaster, but I can't deny that releasing an open source Origin client would be a good start to mending fences.

Below are answers to the most commonly asked questions about Origin and Mass Effect 3. Thank you for your patience as we have worked to answer them.

First off, thank you Chris!

"1) Will Origin be a requirement to play all versions of Mass Effect 3? (Digital and/or from a retail brick and mortar store)
Yes, Origin is required for all PC editions of Mass Effect 3, physical or digital."

Just saved me some cash, awesome.

"5) Is there an opt in or opt out clause for data collection?
Users will be allowed to opt-out of Mass Effect 3 data collection from inside the game."

Have your people watch this closely. Other EA games have a button to turn off data collection, open menu click it off, close menu. Open menu again (right away or next time you play) and its back on. Posted Image

Ok , I'm going to chalk up the rude comments as to ignorance on not knowing how contracts work , especially if someone is working outside the company.Hey if you don't want to hear the truth fine , but makes you look bad in the end. With that leaving the topic before I start typing angry messages.

Ignorance is bliss to some people

And so is making assumptions based on ignorance; my scant knowledge is based on the few messages in this forum, EA's forum, and an almost empty page at SourceForge. Other than that, we know very little. But I liked the overall information and tone of it; the Origin topic became upbeat for a change because of it.

However, perhaps you know more than what's posted here and I couldn't argue that. And yes, I do understand NDA's having signed several of them over the years.

Of course.  Your delightful banter is always appreciated.  Why were you banned or am I not supposed to ask?

Have you gotten all caught up on the latest news?

Yep, Dmex was an EA dev, then he was a troll, then he wasnt a troll, then he was a contractor.

And I got banned for mentioning my stance on a certain process which "circumvents copyright".

Well, that is what I said. Then I got banned.

Actually,  it's likely the prelude to a catastrophy.

This thing will easily be able to be redesigned to execute a virus payload,  maybe even transfer a virus or worm,  and spread throughout the 'net.  Sites will offer a "Download of the open source Origin" that's actually going to install a virus/worm,  and it'll have the ports EA is receiving on, so it's possible a well designed worm can exploit that.

Overall,  I'd say this is at least as bad an idea as Origin is itself.  I'm actually not a fan of this idea,  and TBH,  I'm shocked that someone on the security team would actually be willing to give up the obscurity portion of security.

Which, ironically, the outside contractor indicated did not circumvent the DRM.   This whole thing seems something of a gaggle.  Hopefully, they'll get it sorted.  The right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing, but that's often the case in large corporations.

To be honest, I didn't really understand what he was talking about other than it was a possible alternative to the current Origin.

You ever used/participated in open source projects before?

No? Yeah, didn't think so.

A lot of amazing software out there is open source - just because it can be used to spread viruses doesn't mean that it will.

Linus and Firefox are virii, according to Micro$ofton.

Exactly. Closed source software can also be used to transmit virii. Outlook for example, had such a poor security record, that a lot of people in the IT industry unofficially renamed it to Outbreak.

This is true - if EA's actual PR were half as good at communicating as dmex they'd be well-loved for it.

He works for EA under a contract. So basically, yes.

No, no, wait! Buy it used and THEN sell it to gamestop after you've let all your friends have a turn with it like it's
the prison b!tch.

In terms of installing Origin it comes down to choice, the choices are to install Origin and play the games that require it or don't install it and pass on playing the games that require it.

I have chosen to pass on it, in other words I have cancelled my Mass Effect 3 Collector's Edition preorder. I will not be playing ME3 until I can do so without Origin, even if that means never being able to play it. I will say that I have bought all the previous Mass Effect games in physical copy format, so I don't care about ME3 and Steam.

Therefore, I bid you adieu until a time comes (if it comes) when Origin is not required to be installed.

Hahaha!

Really though - you would think this would be something more serious they would be tackling.

This is actual tangible sales they're missing out on.
