Of course, sometimes the vocal minority just..... loses.

People seem to forget that BioWare, while not being EA, is owned by EA. They have to listen to them, or they get fired. Also, Origin scanning your computer to see if you have other EA games in your programs isn't really that big a deal.

Being so concerned with your privacy, I can't imagine why you'd have an internet connection at all in this day and age. Every website you visit is full of phishing and scams, and your internet browser happily hands your history over to any server it queries. Unfortunately, privacy is kind of gone now, unless you want to unplug your internet, kill your credit cards, and live in a tent.

This is factually a heap of horsedung. Just so that I put it out there.
Its an overused and above all incorrect excuse to justify the robbing of further privacy. Living in privacy is very much still possible and unless you have some malware of some kind you browser does not randomly give its history to websites so you can even have internet. You can even have facebook! As long as you follow the basic rules of not putting on the internet what you don't want on it you are golden.

I have tried to discuss the issue with Chris. After a comment asking for clarification on the issue, Chris started ignoring my PMs. Is this what all fans who hang around have in store for them?

I don't really think Bioware is to blame for all of this.  It's not really up to them, at the end of the day.  EA runs the show.

I wish more people understood this.

Nevertheless, as long as Origin is required, I won't purchase the game.  Yes, that is bad for Bioware.  I cannot help it that someone over there signed the papers to sell the company to EA.

And that is understandable. Since people from BioWare do take time to respond to the people on this forum I think they do genuinely feel bad when customers aren't going to purchase their product but I think goes deeper than just losing a sale. It's similar to when I make my music. I'm sincerely happy when people enjoy listening to my stuff and want to use it. People have even wanted to pay me for my work, although so far I've never made anyone do so.

I asked him to explain why sandboxing origin is agains the rules, and as he put it, "copyright circumvention". The mail is still unanswered 2 weeks later.

Be reasonable. Do you know how many PMs they get every day, do you think they have nothing else to do than engaging in discussions over multiple PMs with every single user who sends them a message?

I am being reasonable. He answered another pm on an unrelated matter a few days ago, but the first mail is still ignored.

I'm just chiming in to say that I am one of the many people who will not be purchasing Mass Effect 3 as a direct result of this decision. Additionally, it is unlikely that I will purchase any other BioWare products in the future.

A very off-topic for this thread and somewhat disrespectful line of discussion has been removed from this thread. I really do sympathize with you guys, but you're making it awfully difficult to justify keeping this thread open when you (the general "participants of this thread" you) time and again resort to violating our Site Rules and going off-topic.

Bogsnot1, Ravenmyste and Girlpower23, consider this your warning. Any further attempts to steer this discussion towards company bashing will result in more punitive measures.

I would like to thank some of our forum veterans such as Dragoonlordz and Zanallen for trying to keep this debate/discussion/argument open and on an even keel.

Yet Blizzard listened to their fans and didn't do it. They also were going to make the cross realm invite system paid for.. and yet again listened to their fans and did not go ahead with it. This is what we call "Listening" to fans and giving them the best experience possible, this is not giving random PR COmments like "It's out of our hands" or "We want the best experience possible" but then go to say "We don't want to hear it."  Unfortunately I don't know what BiOWare have attempted to do or not to do. What I do know is they aren't giving their customers the best experience. They are making a lot of fans unhappy. Whether that's through the usage of Origin or ignoring Steam.

A lot of fans? I do not believe the Origin debacle has reached the heights of the Blizzard incident, or even the orginal Mass Effect's DRM. But we shall see.

Indeed we shall, and that's part of the point of this thread isn't it? The more people that are aware of this and against it, the greater the chance is that EA will change its mind on this.

Something I want to know..

How is it that Bioware was able to steer Star Wars: The Old Republic away from requiring Origin (had it required Origin, I never would have bought it, as well), and yet, cannot steer away from an Origin requirement for Mass Effect 3?

I have a question about the ability to play Mass Effect 3 offline, you
see I have Steam and every game I love to play seems to require Steam
nowadays and it seems that Mass Effect is going to that route as well
now. I just recently moved to the middle of no where and it took awhile
to get internet here so I tried to play Skyrim and a steam error kept
popping up saying "Unable to connect" even when I was trying to click
the play offline button, now I didn't have internet at the time so I
couldn't contact steam support about it, but Steam and it's users always
state that you need only activate online once and you don't have to
play online, which is where my problem is.

So my question is how
reliable is Origin's offline mode(if it has one) as I may drop my
internet after ME3 comes out....paying 120$ a month for 2mbps satalite
sucks, but I don't want to miss out on playing the end of my two
shepard's stories. Any answer from a bioware employee would be great,
but not required.

P.S: Sorry about the copy thread ^_-

There is absolutely no logical explanation for having Origin on an MMO. As a social add-on, it is pointless. MMOs have their own social UI. As DRM, it is useless. There is nothing that can be pirated from an MMO, since it is 100% online. Pirate MMO servers cannot be prevented by Origin. Overall it would just lag the game, which combined with peoples' already terrible PCs would pretty much crash SWTOR.

And if you really want to get your point across, I would suggest speaking directly to EA with your concerns. Organize an email campaign to bombard EA with the people's concerns about Origin. Or maybe go old school and use physical letters in an effort to reinforce the sheer numbers of people unwilling to compromise on this issue. Or perhaps you can pull a Germany and discuss your concerns with your local news affiliates.

Unfortunately, complaining about Origin on the BSN and threatening to cancel your preorders isn't going to get EA to change their minds. I doubt very many EA execs come here and anything that Chris or other Bioware staff relay is going to be filtered through several others and most likely won't create much of a response. A large drop in potential sales may get their attention, but that will come too late for ME3.

Edit: When I say bombard, I don't mean spam. I am refering to a large group of people sending in eloquent, well reasoned letters that express their concerns regarding Origin.

Origin can't prevent that sort of crime on any game, as evidenced by 2 of the 5 most stolen games of 2011 being Origin exclusive.  All the other rationales may make sense to you and me, but they don't make sense to the suits at the board meetings.

Originally Star Wars: The Old Republic was going to be Origin exclusive, but somewhere along the line the requirement for Origin to play the game was removed.  Am I incorrect in this?

It's pretty simple: Star Wars? Not EA's IP. Mass Effect? Is an EA IP.

It still is Origin exclusive, but you don´t need the client to download it, just the account to purchase the game if you want the digital edition.

As far as I know you are wrong.
I have been following SW:ToR since back in 2009 and in all that time there was never anything official or even unofficial regarding an Origin requirement for SW:ToR.
Origin is however the only digital store that had SW:ToR up for preorder.

And even if Origin was spyware on the Xbox/PS3, what would there be to spy on? What games you bought on the marketplace? How many hours you spent playing them? That information is already collected by Microsoft/Sony.
