but what happened to cd keys and online activation?

Disk checks seem rather impractical in a market were digital distribution is growing every year. No disk nothing to check after all.
And Origin is a form of online activation, only the activation get´s outsourced from the game to the game manager which in theory should lead to fewer problems for both publisher and customer (of course in practice this is not always true).

And for those of us who simply don't use DD and only purchase software on a physical hard copy?

Why should we have to bog our systems down with yet another programming running in the background?

Have the actual games ever been caught red-handed sifting through the general contents of customer's computers?

Has it ever occured to you that people read the EULAs and clicked AGREE reluctantly, and that the Origin requirement and Origin's behavior is the last straw, and we've decided we're not compromising or giving in any more?

Has it ever occured to you that people can be pushed too damn far?

Has Origin ever been caught ? I have not seen anything that would prove that (Please do not bring up the ProgramData screen shots I am tired of explaining them). That Origin scans the whole hard-drive is a myth started by the misinterpretation of the behavior of early versions, that has been corrected.

I am totally fine with people who actually care about such topics and who refuse to use game managers like Steam and Origin on principle. I might not agree totally with them, though I have to agree with many complaints regarding the services which have many disadvantges for the customer.
What I find rather amusing is those who complain loudly about privacy here only to rush to the next best online petition to hand out their name, address, emailaddress, the results of their last colonoscopy and whatever else the petition site wants from them.

Yes, Origin has been caught.

No, we don't buy the smoke and mirrors -- "it's been changed" and "it never did it to begin with you just don't have the leet skills to interpret the data correctly".

No, I haven't dumped my personal info into an online petition.  I've submitted my personal info in a complaint to the FTC about Origin, but then, I WANT my name on the complaint.

Problem with this is

A: You don't provide evidence to back up the statement that the fact that it has been changed is all "Smoke and mirrors" please provide proof of this statement so people are not mis informed.

Also using Process Monitor on an early version Origin did have monitor procs in several dierctories.  However newer versions do not do this and mainly stay within Origin related directories.

Also with the evidence that most people use we must remember that not everyone here is up to speed with what exactly Process Monitor does as it does not say if and what information is being sent, this can be said for a lot of programs aside from Origin such as Steam and other client programs.

Recommended Requirements
<snip>
Hard Drive: 2.5 GB of free space
<snip>

Not sure where you got that list but the recommended specs for ME3 are:

Recommended Spec:
OS – Windows XP SP3/Vista SP1, Win 7
CPU – 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (equivalent AMD CPU)
RAM – 2GB for XP / 4GB RAM for Vista/Win 7
Disc Drive – 1x speed
Hard Drive – 15 GB of free space
Video – AMD/ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB or greater, NVidia GeForce 9800 GT 512 MB or greater
Sound – DirectX 9.0c compatible

Source: http://www.kotaku.co...ect-3-released/

If it only required 2.5GB free space on the hardrive, I'd be even more concerned about ME3 as it would indicate they recycled stuff through the game even more than DA2 did!

Thank god I have the 360 version.

Thank. God.

Because I gave my pc some heavy upgrades recentely and thought about getting ME1 and 2, to start playthroughs with those. But after hearing about Origin and that ME3 won't be available on Steam, i'm glad i dodged that bullet. Not to mention it would've been a waste of money if i found out about this after i bought the PC versions of the games. I feel bad for the people who only have a PC, cause you guys didn't deserve this at all.

Got that form IGN.com, but the hdd space is not my concern. I got a high end pc and wonder if this is just a simple consoleport. You can never find this info on averages gameing sites!

what

No, seriously: what

The 2.5 GB amount is for the demo to be released next month, not the full game.

Recommended is never the highest quality to be honest, if anything it is the standard/medium quality. As always with PC title you can exceed recommended specs and the quality of the game improves.

So the complaint is that the game doesn't have the recommended system level high enough to make you feel good about all the money you just threw away?

Well, looking at the fact that it only supports DX9.0c compatible, it's very likely "just" a console port. Whereas this makes sense from development perspective, in terms of keeping those costs lower, it's remains a bummer that those of us with more up-to-date hardware don't get the benefits our hardware is capable of. However, I'm only going by what those spec requirements indicate.

Ever done video editing? Ever had to run numerous virtual machines at the same time? There are quite a good number of reasons for "powerful" hardware, it's not just gaming. On the other hand I do not deny the fact, that it won't be the majority of PC users who really need all the power they possess under their machines hood.

I vaguely remember hearing that the specs would be the same/close to those of the previous games so people would not have to upgrade their machines to finish the story

who's complaining? I was asking if you read correct.

@ Guy_Fawkes,thanks for the info. I to find it a bummer sometimes when you buy a consoleport that looks pretty boring on pc.

The only thing that I know is people looking at the process monitor and then go on to claim how Origin scanned a several gigabyte big folder in under three seconds and afterwards send the data to the Amazon store.

Both rather ridiculous claims if you even think about them for just one second.

I am no professional with Process Monitor, but read/write access to a Sony Ericsson file does not seem like something that Origin should need.

I haven't seen anyone claim that it sent the data to Amazon, which would be highly silly.

I don't think so, because of this:
At the time Origin (all versions since November) crashs if the firewall is blocking the complete I-net connection. According to Chris 9):

Mass Effect 3 requires Origin to be played, so you cannot play Mass Effect 3 without Origin being installed. This applies to both the single player and multiplayer games.

you will need the client.
So, no running Origin means to me no playable ME3.
Isn't exactly the same online thing that Ubisoft implemented, but some kind of it.

This is not true. Origin.exe still accesses the IE folders - not Origin related. Setup.exe still accesses Desktop.ini files in not Origin related folders.

In the end apart from the element of who you trust more, when comes down to technical skills and knowing what that data means no-one I have seen has put forth better more detailed information than the developer on the link.

It's a case of those who have seen something and think they know what it means vs those who know what it is actually doing. I'm not picking a side I'm just saying it is not just a simple black and white situation from what I have been reading.

Oh I have. It was when they discoverd that Origin sends data to aws.amazon.com.
But I am too lazy to dig those posts up, also I have forgotten if these claims were made in the english or the german section.

Weird. For a short time there kept getting a message saying I don't have permission to post.

I'm not a fan of Origin. In fact, late last year I became very annoyed with the service because I had once bought a digital copy of a game through their old EA Download Manager, wanted to recently play the game again, but couldn't because kept getting a pop-up saying I had to install Origin first. Let that sink in for a bit. Convinced me what a horrible idea it is to ever buy digital copies of games.

Yet now you're telling me that even with buying physical copies of a game I am still going to get Origin forced onto me. Guess this means I wont be buying the PC version of ME3. Which is a shame, since I actually like buying more than one copy to compare the differences between gaming systems just because I roll that way.

Yet despite all that lack of love for Origin from me, what somehow manages to disturb me the most out of all this is the finger pointing by Bioware/EA of it being Steam's fault a game can't be on Steam. You know, for those that like buying digital copies. I was under the impression that contracts and agreements between two parties has to actually involve two parties. Both sides have the right to say no to proposed agreements. The whole walking away thing to find greener pastures. Nobody is really being a big meanie, it just means two parties couldn't agree on a contract.

Well, except for Origin. Bloody gaming killjoy.

Are there any plans to release a non-Origin version of the game sometime in the future? I'll gladly buy BioWare games (that I love!) all day long if they're not tied to any crappy service/DRM/bloatware that EA is peddling at the time. EA, with their terrible customer service and obvious contempt for their customer base, is a company worth abhorring and I can't bring myself to do anything that validates their bad business practices.

Mass Effect 3 requires Origin to be played, so you cannot play Mass Effect 3 without Origin being installed. This applies to both the single player and multiplayer games.

10) If I have uninstalled Mass Effect 3 or Origin, do I need to reinstall Origin to reinstall Mass Effect 3?

You must have Origin installed to play Mass Effect 3. You would need to reinstall Origin and Mass Effect 3.

11)If I have installed Mass Effect 3 and Origin, do I need to keep the install/gameplay disc in the disc drive to play?
Once you have installed Mass Effect 3 and Origin, you do not have to keep the disc in the tray

I appreciate everyone's patience on this topic. Please continue to ask questions about Mass Effect 3 and Origin and I will continue to try to get the answers for you.

Completly missed that this was added. Thx Chris for providing us with answers.

Not happy at all with the answers though. Looks like ME3 IS completly tied to Origin and won't run without it even if I only play SP and/or have already aythorized the game ugh... What's next? Run ME3 from a browser?! <_<:pinched:
