SWM was doing the standard higher then thou "BSN is so stupid because they do X" BS when he himself is doing the exact same thing.

I think SWM is showing a positive reaction to the possibilities that EDI getting a body brings to her character and not that he's convinced himself that EDI will be reduced to a sexbot like so many other people have, showing positivity towards that.

That's keeping an open mind and not jumping the gun.

There's really no such thing as a sexbot or any female character that is essential to the plot that is there just for eye candy. Just because a female character is attractive, or appears/acts a little flirtatious or what have you, doesn't mean that's all they are about. Miranda is a great example of a character that is clearly designed to be sexually attractive, but also has a very interesting personality and sub-plot if you choose to explore it. Her personality is so good, in fact, that some people HATE her on a personal level.

EDI without a body had a nice quirky little personality, and imo, the Joker/EDI relationship was one of the more entertaining in the game. I would love to see how that could be expanded giving EDI an actual body to go with her quirky personality. EDI is also one of the few VI/AI in the game that seem to have an uncorruptable dedication to serving the organics she works with, and the only AI in the game who seems to truly relate with humans on an emotional level.

Anyways, I'm basically just saying wait and see. I would be very, very, VERY surprised if Bioware didn't make EDIs ME3 story interesting and worthy of some overhauls to her look and role in the story.

Well it is the nature of forums like this to discuss and throw around guesses about the game. Or why would there be a ME3 discussion pre-release? They could just put up a faq with the most important questions/answers and that's it.

Keeping an open mind?
Yea right..You're keeping an open mind that it will be as you think it will.

Ultimatively, I care not how that would expand her "character" - as it is not necessary to expand her character. It's just a silly excuse to justifiy a bad decision.<_<

Well there would be a way to justify it. But I doubt Bioware will pull it off. Reason could be to give a deeper look into AI psychology. But it will probably just be humanized. Also we have Legion for it. Damnit I would prefer Legion as a squadmate at any time of the day to a lady robot EDI.

SWM has shown positivity to the idea and (based from his posts) thinks it will be executed well.

This is just as much 'jumping the gun' as my negativity.

On the topic of this supposed 'jumping the gun'... It's not like all we know is that EDI's been thrown into a sexbot. I've seen the script, I've read the dialogue, I know how it's executed.

Feel free to twist what I'm saying to whatever you like. I'm also apprehensive about this.

Maybe YOU don't care, but others may.

Nothing is necessary to expand a character, yet something has to be done. EDI getting outside the Normandy could be interesting and that's not an excuse.

SWM sees potential and has faith that Bioware will pull it off well. That's not jumping the gun. SWM is arguing that it COULD be good and is bringing up things to support that argument, not like the opposition where they're saying it WILL be terrible. What brings it over the edge are posters like Lotion adding insults into the mix.

I've also seen the leak and I think it's been pulled off alright, despite some rather facepalm-worthy attempts at humor. But I don't know what Bioware will ultimately do because I haven't seen the final game, thus I'm still a little aprehensive of how far they opted to push it or take away from it in the end. You can't know either.

I know it'll be close to how it's presented in the script and I know that if it's anything like how it's presented in the script I'll hate it.

Well, I understand what you mean by that, and it is definitely not going to change because of a few people realizing how dumb these arguments are, but it does generate a lot of unfair hype, either negative or positive, for any new game coming out. Hype is almost always bad for new games, and is generally unrealistic. For example, overly positive hype generally leaves people who finally play the game dissapointed, because they built it up too much. Overly negative hype can hurt the open-mindedness, player-base, and even sales of a game unfairly simply because it was written off as a bad game before anybody even played it. Both things happen quite often in the gaming industry, with one of those two types of scenarios being the rule rather then the exception. Developers already hype their games up enough as it is, don't need people going around doing it for them and spoiling it.

i could see EDI playfully trying to mess with joker's head by changing "skins" and then brushing it off as a joke.

kinda like a parody of this:whistle:

I find it rather shallow that most people assume that 'EDI in a body' = 'EDI sexbot'. That's just dumb.

That is a valid point.

Would you like that Ymir (the most powerful warbots so far) look more like a woman? Honestly, female features on a robot only serve one purpose. And it has nothing to do with war. Why not go all the way and make her a cyborg with human skin? Hey, and since robots don't need clothes, she should be naked. But of course only to kick ass, not because anyone would be drooling at ... um ... it. I mean as if it is not ridiculous already to refer to EDI as 'she'. I mean she has a female voice, but why should a computer have a sex or be sexual at all? I like the idea of ships being refered to as she from a romantic point of view. Like 'the captain and his ship'. Captains are the last who leave the ship or go down with their ship like Shepard in ME2. But why ruin this kind of romantic picture with bringing in sex? I want EDI to be my ship. If I need a robot to follow me around I'll ask Legion. Or Miranda *cough*.

I think you misunderstood me. I said nothing to suggest that mechs ought to look like women, if anything I was criticizing the assumption that a female-voiced robot should automatically look like a woman.

Although, if this Joker/EDI thing is true, then I'd rather EDI have a vaguely human body. Personally, I think it would make it less sad that Joker is hitting on a robot. Image IPB

EDI staying inside the ship could be interesting too. Remeber, she's an AI. As long as you have a open comm channel you can talk to her any time, even outside of Normandy.

Also, even if we do assume EDI getting out is great, practical and desirable - whay is a human female body necessary?

Funny thing is, that it's the other way around in fact. EDI is hitting on Joker, instead of Joker hitting on EDI.

Legion asks the same thing. I don't think EDI had a clear and straight answer for him other than something along the lines of: "Shut up, I like my new body!"

I wish I could take EDI being in a sexbot as a rumour. Somehow, I can't.

I really hope they leave EDI as she is, there is no need to change her. Her slot can be taken up with a far more useful character. Just my feeling.

You're right that assuming either option is good/interesting/desirable is probably bad. We will just have to wait and see what they decide to do with it.

I think if you keep in mind there is an obvious meta-romance between EDI and Joker, it does make sense that she would get a human female body, also because she was designed by Cerberus to be human-like, and Cerberus is all pro human and stuff. We Americans like our perfect happy endings.

At the end of the day, I don't know and nobody else really knows whether it will be better or worse, especially since the game isn't out and nobody has even played a demo yet. (aside from the leaks, which were obviously very unfinished anyways).

Obviously whether or not people like her new story will be mostly subjective, as much of the games story is.

But honestly. Who would have rather had another squadmate from ME1 or ME2 over fembot EDI? *raises hand high*

Maybe that's just me, but I feel like it's not. The whole thing just seems a bit silly imo.

Can't see why the Alliance would keep EDI seeing as EDI is a Cerberus AI. More than likely they flashed her drives and deleted her.

Bioware already confirmed EDI would be returning, this whole fembot/sexbot business has not been officially confirmed, though. They also expressed interest in expanding the Joker/EDI relationship.

[...]

There's a reason that if you seduce a 14-year-old genius that it's still considered a crime--just because the body is biologically ready for sex, it doesn't mean that an innocent mind can't be fooled into engaging in activities it's not ready for. The point is, even if the adult in the relationship tried very hard to be really kind and sensitive, it's still naturally built as an unequal pairing, which will inevitably turn out to be exploitative and all the more confusing for the teenager.

That Tricia Helfer has again been forced into the role of Number 6/the sexbot is appalling by itself. But that, rather than respect the character of EDI, rather than think through the fact that she has effectively just been born, if her body now has organic bits of any kind; they are putting her into a romantic situation.

It's not about whether somebody would be immoral enough to "hit that"--their hormones are irrelevant to this question. It's about whether an AI which has JUST been plunked into a body that can feel for the first time would be emotionally prepared for a relationship, or whether they could be exploited through their total lack of experience. Intelligence does NOT mean immunity to manipulation. It would be a drastically uneven relationship.

They could effectively "transfer" someone else's life experience to her brain to get around this little problem, if they have even thought further than "this suits our plot about organic/metal hybrids like the Reapers and the nature of existence/lots of boys like to fantasize about the perfect robot girlfriend who doesn't have any pesky opinions of her own and won't break your heart because she can't"--but then she wouldn't be EDI anymore. She'd be made of different life experiences, which would change her personality, realistically.

When it comes down to it, I can NOT see them doing this with a male AI in a sexy male body. It's not only fanservice, it's fanservice of the worst and most degrading variety. Sure, they can dress it up and rationalize it any way they want to; they can write it well to cover up the sickly underbelly, exactly as Stephenie Meyer tried to cover up the ugly misogynistic Stepford-wife underbelly of Twilight and her pedophilic undertones with that whole "imprinting" business.

If they write it as an adult relationship between two mature humans, it will fail to be convincing because all of these feelings should be new to her; overwhelming since she hasn't had the proper lifetime to get used to it all, and is suddenly plunged into the world of seeing, hearing, breathing, moving, smelling, tasting, feeling...

EDI isn't even 1 year old in terms of human/organic interactions based on emotions and hormones and all of that. If Shepard got together with her, it would be somewhat less disturbing because we know that he can be really sensitive and gentle as he is if you romance Jack or Tali in particular. You could have faith he'd take it slow. But Joker... Joker is the type to crack naughty jokes all the time. It's just who he is. it will inevitably look bad. Even more so since apparently, the disabled guy can't have a flesh-and-blood human adult.

Joker last game said specifically that we don't have to get all "unnatural" on him, and EDI said it was a "platonic symbiosis" that was going on. For EDI to go from cute and smart AI to "hot robot sex body that everyone drools over", and Joker to go from "brittle bones/I don't date crew" to "but she's an AI so technically even though I work with her more closely than anyone else I can totally jump her metal bones, no conflict of interest there!"

This is the worst decision the Mass Effect team has ever made. Unrealistic in every way and a major disservice to two beloved characters, despite the fact that it was clearly intended to allow Joker to get laid (though not by a real woman.) Yeah, this is sci-fi, but that makes it all the more important for things to make sense internally. If they can't manage that, then they shouldn't have done it. It's double character-annihilation and it's utterly immersion-breaking. Even if it's not as bad as I'm fearing, it's still going to disturb me deeply.

Quoting.

But... I don't even... I don't understand how that would work. EDI might make jokes, especially at Joker's expense, but I can't see it seriously hitting on him. EDI wouldn't have any real concept of how emotions and all that work. It'd be like watching Legion give Shepard a cheesy pick-up line in all seriousness. Image IPB

Not to mention that - unless they've changed the script - we already know the sort of body she'll be getting, and even whom it's modelled after.
