I played through the entire BG1 maingame without any technical problems whatsoever (damn good game to btw) and have recently started playing through the Durlag's Tower expansion.
I got to the part with the warders "Avarice", "Pride", "Fear", and
"Greed". I positioned the bulk of the party near the entrance (by the
stairs up) and sent my paladin to initiate the fight. For some strange
reason, I keep getting two or three dozen additional enemies all labeled
"Fear" and look like dopplegangers. When "Pride" initiated that
cloudkill thing I ran upstairs and got line after line in the log from
Avarice and Fear all taking damage from this thing. Unfortunately, this
caused my game to slow down to about 2-3fps. It is so slow I cannot do
anything. When I finally did manage to go downstairs again, the ENTIRE
first room was littered with the loot of fallen enemies and it put me
in a different room (presumably because there was no longer any room in
the first room). Has this happened to you or anyone you know? Is it a
common bug?

A similar thing happens on the werewolf island in the unpatched game.
5+1 and 4-in-1 sets are unpatched.
3 disk and GOG are patched.
Install the TotSC patch, no need for the original game patch or directx patch. e.g. from www.sorcerers.net/Games/BG/index_misc.php

I tried that, but then I started getting "D:\\Dev\\Baldur\\UIControl\\Buttons.cpp at line 302" error everytime I tried to start up the game. Other threads suggested that I back up my save games and reinstall so I did and it wouldn't recognize my save games. I have no intention of starting over so I think I'm just gonna scrap this game. Too bad, it was a good game but too many technical problems with it.
