Anyone had any luck getting 5.1 sound to work with an ASUS Xonar sound card?

There is a therad stickied at the top of this forum telling you how to maximise the audio and video for ME1. I suggest you start there.

I looked there but it only references Sound Blaster X-Fi cards.

That thread has more to do with how to tweak the ME1 engine to use 5.1, than it has to do with any specific sound device. I use Realtek HD audio, and it worked for me.
It does take a bit of tinkering to get it right, so make sure you back up your files before you start. Also, adjusting the audio settings in game after you have made the changes can go along and reset them, so once you have made the changes, go in, test it out, adjust your volume levels to what you want, then exit out, and reset the settings again.

Really? Never got it to work with my Realtek HD. I bought a Sound Blaster just for ME1.Bogsnot1 wrote...

Using the settings stated in that thread does enable surround sound, but it also causes some extremely loud transmission noises when I'm in the Normandy, which drowns out almost all other audio.
Turning off hardware sound disables 5.1 surround =\\
