Good post, Chris. Fair enough. I think I would still tell people asking me which Star Wars movie to start with to go for A New Hope, though. :P

So not the first movie in the series then? I guess you prove my point. ;)

Well that's... That's just. You... You can't compare ME1 and TPM! Image IPB I get it, though, hehe.

I would never tell someone to watch Phantom Menace unless I really hated that person and wanted them to suffer.

Lots of people also saw Return of the King first too. It was a stand alone good movie. You know, that won an Oscar?

I understand how marketing would say that because they want more people to try out the game, i just feel like the fans of the series are being pushed under the rug with that statement.

You can pick up Saints Row the Third without having to ever play the other two...

In no way is that a remotely sensible comparison.

It is story wise. Hell it explains why the Saints a small time gang became so freaking large and famous. It even shows much more of what the Boss and Gat went through to get to where they are now. Gat's death would be much more worse for you if you really grown close to that character. Storywise Saints Row The Third isn't a great jumping point. Gameplay wise makes it so since it is very damn fun.

Every LOTR movie won oscars. And Peter Jackson wasn't hypeing ROTK as the best entry point, and there wasn't some new guy called Craig asking questions to explain things to new viewers. "Where are the elves going?" "What's up with that weird eye?" "Why are we taking this ring to Mordor?" "What's going on with that dude in the loin cloth?" "Can't we just simply walk into Mordor?"

Actually, as there weren't any gungans in ME1 in the first place, "100% more" wouldn't actually add any.

Are any of you guys new to the ME series? If not, then this "entry-point" talk should not ever matter.

Well, Star Wars, for me at least, whom was alive and kicking at 13 yrs old in 1977, is episodes 4,5 and 6. The rest never happened!

BW should put ME3 for full price on GoG with no DRM and give ME1 and 2 for some 5-10 bucks each to anyone who doesn't already have them. It would certainly Polish the respect EA/BW might gain from their fans!

Every LOTR movie won oscars.

I believe she is referring here to the Best Picture Oscar specifically. Which the first two LotR movies did not receive.

Regardless, I would never tell anyone to wtch RotK first.

Isn't 3 always the worst part of any trilogy. yes, they've sharpened their craft but they've also ran out of new material and we've gotten use to their techniques. It's how it works in movies and tv shows atleast.

I am of the opinion that watching things out of order, reading things out of order, or playing them out of order is a huge waste. If a character dies in Mass Effect 3, you will by definition care less about it only playing ME3 than you would if you had spent dozens of hours with them in ME1 or 2. If you want the emotional bang for your buck, this is the worst way to go.

Starting with ME3: "Oh hey, ME3 is cool! Gonna try the others! ME2 was pretty good, not as good as 3, didn't play with ____ squadmate since they die anyways.....ME1 is alright, not great though.."

As opposed to starting at the beginning. "ME1 is pretty good! Oh man, ME2 is even better! Wow, ME3 is the best one yet! I cried when _____ died" Overall enjoyment is better here.

GENERALLY SPEAKING.

A well designed installment inn a series (e.g. Game 1, Game 2, Game 3, Book 1, Book 2, etc) should actually be a standalone product. Connections are fine, but you should, in general, avoid having the previous material be absolutely required for the enjoyment of the current material. Otherwise, you risk alienating players/readers/etc. In addition, it is generally just poor design. Any individual installment should be a complete, self-contained work.

Now, as the other side of this. Each installment should also be enchanced by the installments around it as well, otherwise having the other installments is as silly as having several installments that cannot be understood unless you put them in together.

So, while it sounds a bit silly? It isn't really isn't as silly as it sounds.
