Honestly though, people should be happy they can play as a female at all, I mean usually that's not the case and besides very few females are physically as strong as capable as men, so femshep is a stretch anyway, even I play her too.

They really aren't. They just aren't as vocal. You have to, le gasp, get to know someone before you know they are a gamer.

Not everyone is going to play the demo. The trailer isn't for people already aware of the game enough to know that there's a demo. The trailer isn't for people who've been fans since the first or second game, the trailer is for new consumers they can attract. If they show off the trailer and demonstrate to people that you can customize your character's gender or race, you start to get more people interested who're tired of playing the stereotypical bald/buzzcut white man.

This would probably make women especially happy that they can have a game with a female lead that isn't some farm game, puzzle game, or otherwise utter garbage.

I agree with this.

I think Bioware should give us an ETA on when the femshep trailer will come out, its becoming increasingly unbelievable the closer it gets to ME3 release date

It's a stretch for MaleShep to do to everything he does, so that isn't much of a point. Alliance soldiers are all genetically modified, anyway, and by ME2, the difference is moot since Shep is the Terminator.

Even though the female gaming market in general is growing, the amount of female gamers who actually (want to) play Third Person Action RPG Shooters (such as Mass Effect) are only a tiny tiny mini fraction of all the gamers out there. You do realize that, right?

Most female gamers I know mostly play "Angry Birds".

Most female gamers I know play Gears of War, Mass Effect, and Saints Row.

Girls who play those games are the exception, not the rule.

My ex-girlfriend used to be one of those GoW playing gamers, but girls like her are extremely rare and extremely hard to find. :pinched:

It may have been rare at one point, but you're downplaying the numbers.  I know a lot of girls, and I know a lot of girls who play games, and the vast majority like to shoot things.  This is doubly true for high school age girls now.  All of my sister's friends pretty much play the same games my sister does, and my sister plays all the same games I and my brother do.

There you go someone aware of the trend. Lucos you need to change your perspective because your view will no longer be valid in just 10 years from now. The gaming landscape has changed and is changing every year with more girls and women trying out new things. The new generation doesn't even see a difference between genders for example:

At the doctor's office the other day my daughter was playing on her DS the new Zelda game, this boy plunks down right beside her and asks if he could watch. Then they proceeded talking about the game and what it's like and where to find stuff. They talked as equals, like the boys in my youth talked to each other about games and when I tried to talk to them they would just ignore or dismiss me. This is no longer the case.

So please, get with the damn program. :kissing:

Not to mention weaponry is probably made to be as light as it can be whithout affecting power, this being the far future.

What the hell does that matter when you're wearing space-age armor and shooting a space-age gun? Yeah, it takes so much physical strength to pull a trigger...

Besides, by the time period we're talking about, humanity has had several generations affected by improved nutrition, medicine, etc; biology is not the only thing which affects us, but also our environment. This would be why humans now have a life span of 150 (and indeed, the life expectancy of our generation is greater than our parents'.) It may be that those physical differences of today are much smaller than they used to be in ME's 2183.

Furthermore, by ME2 Shepard is legitimately a freaking cyborg. "A stretch" my ass. If you can buy the mass effect in general, FemShep is the sanest thing in the entire game. (Not really, but you get the point.)

I have three daughters, and they play games like Zelda as well.....but that isn't really unusual, because Zelda is a casual game for casual gamers.

Women make up roughly half of the gamers for the casual game market, so thats where the majority of the growth of female gamers come from.

Serious, or hardcore games with plenty of violence and an emphasis on twitch like Mass Effect, Crysis 2, CoD etc on the other hand, are still dominated by males.  I don't know the present percentage of female gamers that play games like these today, but I did come across some statistics a few years back which put them at 8%.

I don't believe female gamers will ever comprise a significant percentage of the serious/hardcore gamer market.  Women generally speaking, just don't seem to like these sorts of games.

Zelda, a casual game?  Mass Appeal=/=Casual game.

Zelda games are some of the more difficult games on the market.  Difficult games aren't all that casual.  Bejeweled is casual.  Zelda is not.

Maybe you should introduce your girls to mass effect? Maybe it's misconception on your part and their's that they haven't played anything beyond casual games.

Oh and by the way, Zelda is no casual game, casual gamers will never finish a game like that. It's not something you can dip in and out. It can take 30-40 hours to complete everything.

Zelda difficult?  You must be joking...  It might be difficult for a child below 10 perhaps..  My nephew, who's 8 recently beat Zelda Skyward sword......with some help from my oldest daughter.

Zelda is a casual game? Since when? It's an RPG with puzzles and platforms, but it's an RPG and has always been. A casual game? WTF are you talking about? Zelda is a respected and old IP that most gamers have played at some point, it's a great gateway game for children and young people.

Do you really believe that shooters will ALWAYS be dominated by guys? Gears of War people don't seem to think so since they made female characters FOR their female demographic. Yes we are so very insignificant someone at Gears noticed many ladies played and thought hey, why don't give them dude bras to play with if they choose to!

It's very unlikely that my daughter plays Mass Effect because of her age, by the time she's old enough for the story (rated mature) there will be better games. I've no doubt she will be interested in all kind of genres just like my palette has grown.

Mass effect is an RPG first and foremost that is it's root. You could say that it's the perfect shooter gateway game. I've since played Fallout and Left 4 Dead. Games I would not have touched had it not been for ME. Gears of War is also on my list to try one day. So there you go maybe women who 'like' these games more if you gave them a taste of it and actually consider them as a market.... >.>

If you are going to pull out percentages get a source because I'm pretty sure I've seen differing figures.

I've tried to introduce my wife to Mass Effect, but she wouldn't take to it.  My girls aren't old enough for a game like Mass Effect yet either.

Key phrase "complete everything."  One of the differences between casual gamers and hardcore gamers, is that the former pretty much sticks to the main quest, which significantly diminishes the overall length of the game.

Which one did you start with, because the gameplay of me1 will put a lot of people off. Start her of with ME2 and hope that she'll enjoy it and play me1.

You can do the same for mass effect! And finish it under 10 hours (at least me2). I'm sorry but mass effect is at the same level as Zelda, maybe ME is even easier for me, as there isn't sneaky (I meant sneaky not tricky) puzzles to solve like there is in Zelda.

I agree the point is moot, but genetic modifications don't increase human performance beyond what they're inherently capable of.

Shepard wouldn't likely be stronger/faster than an Olympic grade athlete of today.  Humans have their limits after all.

Depends on the exact nature of the mods (which we aren't privy to), but I agree. Between military training (like as not a system that emphasises leverage and speed over strength and weight), supersuits, awesome mccool guns, and sufficiently advanced technology, I don't imagine a significant gap in efficacy. At any rate, there weren't any unbelievable physical feats that Shepard accomplished in ME1. The second instalment is where the series started stretching the bounds of credulity.

Huh it doesn't matter. Neither in Star Wars nor Star Trek or name any other Sci-Fi franchise women are seen inferiour or less capable. It's commonly accepted in Sci-Fi that men and women are equal. And you'd have to be are real backwater hillbilly to think it shouldn't be that way. Really the point is moot because anyone argueing against femShep is just having some sort of agenda or maybe inferiority complex or what not.

I've tried to introduce Mass Effect to my husband he didn't take to it either.... Does this mean ME does not cater to men? No it means he's not the type to play RPGs or shooters.

But he plays Civs and strategy games for hours on end and I've never been able to get into those. /shrug
It's not a gender thing it's a preference thing.

Your personal experiences, Unbannable, are not the whole demographics opinions.

The difference between casual games and "hardcore shooters" is that the more casual games market toward other demographics. The "hardcore shooters" don't. Hence the reason why a femshep trailer would be a great step in the right direction. If they would market games to other demographics, than other demographics would play said games.

More males than females play video games in general, no matter the genre. But they are catching up.

Preaching to the choir. I really don't care what Shep does unless s/he suddenly launches into space and starts knocking away meteorites and reaper tentacles barehanded.

Boom bam!

Anyway we are getting a trailer and I hope it's awesome and show us some Kaidan or another character that's not Liara for a change. I'll even take some Ashley... ^_^
