The reason that everybody hates Vega is because he didn't win the genetic lottery. As others have already pointed out, "he looks like a dumb soldier." I believe that we are all familiar with the old expression of you can't judge a book by the cover. However, it is never the less an extremely difficult thing to do in Western society.

I thought Zaeed looked (and sounded) awesome and he definitely wasn't winning any beauty contests.

Its not a matter of beauty its a matter of looking like a popped collar frat boy.   Honestly if anything I think they should have made him uglier.

His character may end up having a good personality; but he's a failure in so far as character design goes.

Actually, since you get to talk to them so much in ME2 you don't even need much dialogue. Just during missions actually. So you wouldn't lose much if they died. After all you can only use 2 squadmates at max anyway, which means that you'll miss out some dialogue in any playthrough. No matter if you chose the 2 because the others are dead or because you had to choose because you can only take 2. The only thing I can think of is that Bioware would have had to make it default that all survived the SM. Which they have to do anyway if they are imporant on missions as I think it is going to be. Not like Liara BEFORE LotSB. Not to get into spoiler territory but much of the ME2 cast will be available as temporary squad-mates for LotSB style missions in the game. LI status will be recognized.

There's another actor that looks more like Vega then Ronnie. While the younger voice does give more akin to that trash were I'm from, doesn't mean they directly used his likeness.

I saw it on Gamefaqs, so I'm still searching for it.

tbh I'll play ME3 like Chris Priestly said. My favorites first, then the others. I hope that ME1s squaddies achievements will make a comeback (but that would require much more side-quests, wouldn't it?) to encourage me to test all the squaddies.

Basically, Vegas design is dull and theres nothing interesting about him at the first glimpse.

When I played ME for the first time, I took Wrex and Garrus to almost every mission, basically, because I thought "Oh gawd, cool looking aliens and dull humans, I take the aliens to my squad!". On later playthroughs I brought Kaidan and/or Ash with me and I realised, that they are great characters as well.

ME2 had worse team interaction, but it still delivered some complex new characters, which were overshadowed by e.g. Mordin, Legion or Thane (I include him in my top 3 ). This will be the exact case of Vega, imho.

at initial stage, everybody will hate him.
then, everybody will ignore him
and finally, nobody will notice the moment he will become cool.

Also, I'm kind of confused, that people watch MTV shows.
