It's really starting to get frustrating being stuck at this spot, unable to proceed no matter who I choose to fight Loghain. I've been trying various tactics with everyone but always get my ass handed to me.

If you have at least 1 point in poison-making, coat your weapons in and chuck something nasty at him.

Completely irrelevant. That's for spoilers in a topic. browsing the titles shouldn't spoil the game for a person. Thanks for *your* post.

Didn't say "ruins." I said "Spoils". Which is exactly what the title did. Yet another moot point. Thank you for thanking me for thanking your post.

This subforum doesn't contain the "Do not post spoilers in thread titles" rule that the other spoilers forum has. Again, thanks for the thanking.

(1) Pretty obvious that's just an oversight in a new forum. Every other Bioware spoilers forum has it.
(2) Regardless of that, what is the point of putting a spoiler in the title? Is it so vital to you that you attract people to your object subject that you just don't give a damn about whether you ruin other people's enjoyment of the game?
It's not just some arbitrary thing that Bioware asks people not to put spoilers in the title because they're a**hats that don't want you to have fun. There's a reason for it, and it's a good reason: there's very very little if anything to gain by putting a spoiler in the title, and it can significantly hurt other people's enjoyment of the game.

1. Their mistake. Not the OP's.
2. I'm not the original poster. You probably would have noticed that if you read the thread. How else is the guy supposed to get help without posting a spoiler in the title.
3. As I stated earlier, if this ruins your enjoyment of the game then you lead a sad life.
Thanks for your post.

Hello Dragon Age: Origins fans
This forum is for you all to discuss gameplay elements in Dragon Age. If you want to compare how to create the best Blood Mage, if you want to know the best path for leveling up Morrigan, if you want to plan your path through the game to maximize your game experience or any of a mass of other topics, this is the forum for you.
The discussions here MAY contain story or gameplay spoilers that may spoil the secrets in the game. Please read at your own risk.
Its within rules and common sense.
Anyways, back to topic, a mage can defeat Loghain pretty easily, in fact, I consider it a bad performance to take a swing (even if it misses) while dueling with him. He is so easy its laughable.
I can see how a warrior character can have problem with him though, easiest way is to switch to a Mage that has some kind of crowd control ability.

Tried it with my rogue a while ago and had to take a normal pot just to be on the safe side. Ah, and a deathroot coating just for rp reasons. Had momentum open and my weapons gemmed with paralysis ( 1 grandmaster, 1 master and 3 journeyman paralysis runes, lol
As for a warrior I don't know, didn't give it a shot...
Try playing around with your runes and coatings a bit... If you have poison making throw some soulrot bombs at him they do awsome damage...

I tried 4 more times in each case trying rock salve and quickness salve and increasing the number of potions. Eventually 3 potent and 5 greater and few normal and lesser heal potions plus the quickness salve later I win just barely. Plus I changed to a dragonbone longsword with additional lightning damage and paralysis chance plus physical resist. Still he was going 40+ points per hit through my armour and I was doing 20-25 or so to him.
He has I would guess 400-600 hits and I missed him with an attack bonus of around 110 while he was paralyzed. Then I see him after the joining and what a shock. My character had him beat hands down, more health, more stamina, higher stats, better skills with sword and shield, better attack bonuses etc.
You are fighting Über-Loghain in that fight...he is boosted from the looks of things x2 or x3 over what the character is like after he joins your party.
This is on hard difficulty...had I lost the last one I was going to drop to normal.

Other than dropping the dfifficulty down from Normal to easy, can someone please tell me how I'm supposed to defeat Loghain in a one-on-one duel. Even Alastair, in his full suite of Juggernaut armor is beaten to a pulp within 30 seconds and I spend 3/4 of my time sutffing healing potions down my neck. I also have Alastair using the Starfgang sword and this barely makes a mark on Loghains health.
It's really starting to get frustrating being stuck at this spot, unable to proceed no matter who I choose to fight Loghain. I've been trying various tactics with everyone but always get my ass handed to me.
One more thing I don't liek about the game. Taht bosses are 10 times tougher simpyl becasue tehy are bosses. Screw that.
An Ogre or a dragon having a whole lot of HP's and armor? Ok, makes sense.
But for that bastard Howe in light armor to have more HP and armor rating than my whole party combined? WTF???? Increase the toughenss of his bodyugards or put more of them if you want ot make the battle difficult. Not this redicolously overpowered "normal" opponents.

Just get a character that is is not half assed, and you'll soon realize that the easiest opponents in the game are the bosses. I've yet to meet a boss that lasts longer than 15-20 sec against my rogue, unless the boss use a lot of knockback/crowd control.
Almost a bit aggravating that so many complain about the game being hard. Maybe Bioware should have made a nightmare+++ difficulty for us who want a proper challenge
