The smaller squad is fine so long as the ME2 squadmate missions are of LOTSB quality. Having to talk to have the number of people between missions will be a relief.

Remember that on 40% of the missions you will have a squadmate already. :)

They will probably add more DLC crew members like in ME2, but it doesn't really matter to me as long as i have Garrus and Tali.

Spoiler is tech, DLC is biotic (or biotic-based)

I didn't really like having to gather a motley crew of followers in Mass Effect 2. I actually prefer having fewer permanent squadmates that I can develop deeper relationships with.

Bioware has been strangely quiet about this. I wouldn't be surprise if the crew was actually much bigger than the current ones *known*. If not, then that just made the entire ME2 story even more pointless. Afterall, why introduce all those characters if they are just going to be cameo for the next game? Just like the disappointment the community had on Ashley/Kaiden/Liara in ME2 main game?

Less squadmates will probably mean more of a challenge and will more than likely mean that your class and powers will have a much bigger impact in gameplay.

Rumored ME3 Squad.
Ashley or Kaiden.
Tali.
Garrus.
Liara.
James Vega.
Spoiler Character.
Collector's Edition DLC Character.

Hmm, what a poor list.

Ashley's my ME1 companion and I'm proudly human first but I don't like her that much.

Kaiden is dead

Tali was ignored since the first time I laid eyes on her on the Citadel

Garrus is decent but I'd prefer to have someone else

Liara was annoying and boring.

That's it for squadmates??  Right off the bat half are dead or never used, and 2/3rd of the remaining I'd prefer not to use.  We better have Grunt or Zaeed

im glad they are goin in this direction. In ME2 i found myself not using very many of my sguad mates, but now it goes back to the originals and like that, it brings back memories, but all the squadmates from ME2 will be in ME3 one way or another.

If we were to get characters with actual depth, I'd even welcome a fixed squad, like in Gears.

As it stands, however, already knowing what the ME3 squadmates are gonna be, I'd say it's a decline.

Because they're pandering to the xenophiles and homosexuals, am I right, Kaiser?

No, because the squad in general just happens to be rather weak. Hell, if Kaishley is the pinnacle of depth on this "new" squad, surely something must be wrong with it.

I'm still disappointed at the lack of proper roleplaying - why shouldn't I be? - but that has little to do with this completely seperate complaint.

Why, that would make Commander Shepard...Captain?

I always thought Shep should have an Omni-shield, big renegade star painted on the front.

I actually wouldn't mind if they released some of the older characters as DLC crew, given their post-mission status.

Yes there are 7 squadmates (including dlc character) this time around and I'm fine with that. 8 true squadmates, but that's only because you have to switch one out based on the save. Obviously it also depends upon if Garrus and Tali live, but still not a bad size.

Kaidan/Ashley
Liara
James
Tali
Garrus

Legion looks prominent in quite a bit of the footage, he is even on the Normandy in the Galaxy Map trailer () It looks as though he is at least a temp squad-mate (If not full squad-mate) in the game.Other than that I am convinced that there will be lots of temp squad-mates that join you on the Normandy (Temporarily), bioware is not going to do down these character's roles in the galactic conflict. Especially characters such as Thane and Miranda, which have lot's of demands from fans.

You should not be surprised, ME games have never been good at role-playing.

I guess the discussion about the squad in ME 3 went just about that one:

- So guys, we have to cut the number of squadmates, introduce new ones, make homosexual romance possible AND include some fan favorites. Any ideas?

- <raises hand> I was thinking about a new character.

- That's great! Shoot right away.

- Ok. First off, he is a human male.
<"That's bold!" "this man's a genius!">
- I'm not finished yet. Secondly, he is pumped up. I mean really pumped up.

- That's truly visionary! I wonder, what class should he represent? Maybe his looks will be deceiving! A man of hulking posture, yet a master of infilt...

- Oh, stop right there, boy. No. He is a soldier, and likes to shoot stuff. Also, heres the concept art.

- Well, he lookes like an ape, so I guess his looks are kid of deceiving... Whoa! Let me ask you something - does the game not have a big male Soldier already?

- No, Kaidan is a Sentinel.

- I was talking about Sheploo. You know, default male Shepard. The statistics show that it is the most popular combination, male soldier.

- Thats the point. The new character is going to look up to Shepard. It's a younger version of Sheploo.

- Brilliant! A spare default Shepard in case you don't play as one already! And if you do its a perfect way to double your performance! Two Shepards on the squad, who would have thought. Also, I've read the spoiler character concept, and I think it will spawn tons of terrible fanarts, so I greenlit it right away. Now, onto the returning characters. I think we really need to take another look at the previous games. <hands out charts and diagrams>. As you can see, theres just one squadmate, that has almost no haters. Also, he won 'the best sidekick' award way back in 2007.

- Does that mean that Wrex is making a huge comeback?!?

- Oh, you silly! If that was the case he would be alive in ME2 by default! No, but he will get a cameo. Thats enough. The rest of the ME1 squad, however, will be permament ME3 squadmates, if they happen to survive the ME2 events, and at least two of them do.

- But sir, some reports say, that a big part of the players didn't even bother to visit Tali in the engine room, just to listen to some codex entries. The same goes for human companions, and people are getting more and more annoyed with us sticking Liara in their throats.

- Oh, Liara, yes! Thanks for reminding me about her. As I remember, she is the current holder of all the valuable information in the galaxy, has a private army, is an expert on Protheans...

- And the Protheans are a big deal in ME3s plot!

- That's right, I was about to say it myself. Players will thank God Liara is there. Anyway, I say we make her unkillable and unavoidable.

- We already did, sir.

- How thoughtful! So, thats about it. The ME1 cast with an additional Shepard and the spoiler character, and without Wrex. Perfect.

- Sir, are'nt we going to include the fans favorites from ME2 as well?

- Well, why? We will kill all the ME2s cast by default, just like we killed Wrex. Of course, Tali and Garrus excluded.

- And what if any other squadmates survive?

- They'll get a cameo. Meetings off!

=========================================================================

Anyway, if not for the spoiler character/DLC character I would be very worried about the depth of the squad. We already know that bunch, and Vega is not as interesting as the others (at least he looks like Jacob 2: Electric Boogaloo).

It will be "I want to set my own rules" by Garrus vol. 3, "Did you know, that Quarians...?" vol. 3, and so on.

No. It is actually a step in the right direction. (No sarcasm). One of my files will only be a 5 man squad including my Shepard since Tali and Garrus are dead.

I'd agree that trimming back the squad from 12 was a good move.

In ME2 some of the squad members were underpowered (Jack, Jacob),  overpowered (Kasumi), overly specialized (Tali),  very similar to one another (Thane and Samara), or had a power set which didn't have any focus (Legion).  Giving us fewer; but more versatile squad members helps to clear up a lot of those problems.

However; I think trimming it down to 6 or 7 was a tad much and I don't think the squad they've created does clear up all those problems.  James Vega and Ashley seem very similar and Ashley's focus on her weapons damage and nothing else seems pretty useless.

[MINOR SPOILERS REGARDING WHICH SQUADMATES YOU WON'T HAVE]  Also there is no Sentinel squadmate in the game if you failed to save Kaiden which leaves you without access to the most versatile class in the game.  And finally and most severely,  there is no Krogan on the squad. [END SPOILERS]

Your analysis of the squadmates was summed up perfectly.  I only really felt the need for a handful of the companions I needed to take with me... Thane, Grunt, Miranda, Mordis, Garrus and Tali on ocassion, REGARDLESS of what my character build was.  That's only HALF of the crew.

I have to say I am disappointed about what you mentioned with the Krogans since they have been my favorite squadmates in both ME1 and ME2.  They felt like my personal bodyguards. Haha

No, we just wish that squad members from ME2 were given at least as much attention as those frome ME2.
