So, if Kaiden died on Virmire, we have 2 soldiers, 2 engineers, 2 adepts and one infiltrator, but not sentinel or vanguard?

That squad kinda sucks.

Finally, someone besides me notices.

You are not the only one to notice.  It just seems odd that they have given us this squad.  This leads me to wonder if those temporary squadmate missions are more prevalent.

Part of me wants to believe there are some surprise squadmates they haven't announced/weren't in the leak.

But that's just wishful thinking.

in ME 1 you had six squadmates soooooo, whats the problem

Having twice the options, while reducing character depth, did increase choice and replayability. I couldn't stand having Miranda around, but thankfully there are others who can do a warp.

Good thing I learned to lower my expectations as much as possible, so the sting of disappointment is weak.

Having a smaller team makes the characters easier to flesh out and also creates better opportunity for banter. With the huge team in ME 2 there was little to no banter or squad interaction with the exceptions being when Jacob initialy welcomed them to the ship and the Miranda/Jack and Tali/Legion confrontations.

The other 600 people to point this out didn't make it apparent enough, I guess.

I didn't feel like reading the whole thread.  Just adding my two cents.

There is going to need to be a metric ton of banter in this game or there are going to be a lot of disappointed gamers.

Honestly I loved Mass Effect 1; but I don't really think the ME1 characters were a lot more developed than their ME2 counterparts.   I liked Liara; but her romance came on really strong and Garrus and Tali were never developed much at all until ME2.

Wrex did have some pretty amusing stories though,  sigh I miss Wrex.

There are some things even banter can't save.

You can only bring along two anyways so why have a dozen?

I pretty much prefer everything in ME 2 to ME 1 as I think ME 2 was just a better overall game period but one of the things ME 1 did right was the squad size.  I felt like I could use everyone and they served a purpose.  Sometimes in ME 2 it is hard to use everybody because the squad is so damn huge.  Don't get me wrong I loved ME 2's squad but as far as using squad members it always feels like there is someone during the playthrough that is just taking up space on the Normandy as I like to use everybody at least a couple of times.  In ME 1 I didn't feel like I was neglecting using anyone.  With all that said I still thought ME 2 did better in the character development (with the exception maybe being Wrex).

To fit differing combat scenarios?

I don't know about you, but I like to be prepared for what I'm fighting.

While I agree that ME2 is better overall, I think they went a bit overboard with the "filler" characters (Characters that have no real ties to anything major in-game or in-universe), like Thane, Grunt, Zaeed/Kasumi, Samara, etc. They could have easily cut them out and made a squad of around ME1's size with all equally important characters. Would have saved them time, and possibly been easier to consider letting some of them be on the ME3 squad.

Personally, I don't really mind if we can't have everyone who is alive from ME1 and ME2 as squadmates. I mean, it didn't bother me that Wrex wasn't a squaddie in ME2. I could go to Tuchanka at any time to visit, and it made sense with his story. Same goes with Liara, though she had it even better thanks to LotSB. Ashley/Kaiden got a really small cameo, and that was probably sad for their fans, but at least they're coming back full time in ME3!

I figure Bioware will probably give a cameo at the very minimum for everybody. Even if it's as simple as a message on your personal terminal in the Normandy, it'd be nice to know how the gang's all doing.

One of the first things I am doing in ME 3 when I get back on the Normandy is I am going to talk to Ash.  I am still a little pissed about Horizon.

Makes sense if you think about, shepard can't afford to go looking for people to recruit during the war, they simply don't have the time. And from what I've seen of the beta leaks, if your ME2 squad mates survive they'll be busy doing legitimately important things that keep them rejoining your squad.

less squadmates? the OP makes it sound like a BAD thing.

I want solid in depth connection with the squadmates.  it was a bit too shallow IMO of the squadmates in Me2 UNLESS you romanced them.

It sort of is when your favorite character is being sidelined.

From what I understand it will be more like LoTSB situations with many of the former squadmates from the first two games.  In fact LoTSB in many ways is a preview of ME 3.

what does that have to do with it?  my favorite squadmate probably won't be one of them as well.  But I don't feel entitled to make bioware make it so.

what do you mean by sidelined?  like not important to the story anymore? or just not around shepard?  the latter would be true, but the former would be false.  Former squadmates are probably just as involved as shepard in saving the galaxy.

For me atleast, it is the possibility of a Horizon repeat that is troubling.

It depends on who your favorite is.

And there is a number of former squadmembers who have a fairly small role in ME3.
