The indirect advesaries of ME3 made that difficult to justify.  Just as Shepard ended up in a military tribunal situation with a decorated war hero past and something still to offer the military, what do you think civilians with no official records of valor might have gained?  The ones who could join did, that's my take on it.  The others may be contributing elsewhere, but I couldn't see them on the Normandy again in an official capacity.

Just to be clear, what do you mean by indirect adversaries? Just want to make sure I have all the details correct.

I don't mind that we get "only" 4-6. We got WAY too many last game. Granted, some of them was quite interesting and/or good, but even so, overall it was a case of too much bread and too little butter. About six sounds much better :) . Plus, from what I've heard we'll still encounter all or most of our old mates from ME 1/2 that aren't squadmates, so I'm fairly stisfied with it all :)

there was way to many squadmates in 2, less is better and I like the 4-5 squadmates 6 if you add the dlc squadmate. So 4-6 is just fine.

@OP: Only if you consider deeper interaction with your squadmates, the implementation of squad banter, and being able to have a bigger focus on the main story to be "a step backwards".

I remember reading in the confirmed features thread that a lot of squadmates from ME2 and other characters can/will be available as temporary squadmates for certain missions (i.e. doing a mission in ME3 with Miranda to finally deal with her father).

I'll believe that when I see it.

Everyone keeps bringing up this point; but in my mind if you're cutting the size of the squad in half then you should be offseting that by giving each squadmember twice as much dialogue and I don't see that happening.

I mean I like Garrus, Tali, and Liara; but I don't see all of them having enough room left for character development to justify twice as much dialogue.   Vega could be a decent character; but I really don't see him having twice the depth of a character like Mordin, Samara or Thane.   And Ashley and Kaiden were so dull in ME1 that giving them twice as much dialogue sounds like a total snooze fest.

It's a more limited number than in the second game, but, look at the bright side: they will be able to deepen the characters. I like it.

Nothing is perfect.

It's not that there are less, it's how much less.  Couldn't we have come to happy medium of, like, eight?  Plus, why sneeze at ALL of the ME2 people?  I suppose because they could (in theory) all be dead.

Tali and Garrus.

Those two are special cases.  They can die, but they can appeal to both ME2 and ME1 fans in ways that the others cannot.

"Special" indeed. Just look at their fanbases.

If true, then what's the point of the last mission in ME2? I tried on numerous occasions to have my whole team survive. Now, it doesn't seem worth it. My favourite squad mate was Mordin Solus whom unfortunately doesn't seem to be in ME3 :(

Mordin plays an important role in ME3, even without being on the squad.

Much of Tali's fanbase is more than a little on the obsessive side.

Don't know what he's talking about with Garrus, his fans don't seem to be particularly vocal he's just generally pretty popular and no one seems to dislike him.

I'm still sticking with the idea that they should have made 12 possible squadmates but you can only recruit 8. The 12 should have been the following squadmates:

Garrus
Tali
Liara
Grunt
Ashley/Kaidan
Jack
Miranda
Mordin
Legion
Prothy
Spoiler
James Vega

If they died you dealt with it

There seem to be a fair number of obsessive Liara, Miranda, and Kaidan fans too.

I'm not seeing any issue here.

I haven't seen anyone ask what Liara, Miranda, or Kaidan's sweat tastes like.

Tali, on the other hand...

So because one person asked something, that makes them all obsessive?

That still doesn't reflect an entire group as a whole.

I don't know, GMagnum; maybe you should go ask in their character threads.
