ME2 had too many squadmates and most of them felt like they were invisible for most of the missions. With a smaller squad they can add more dialogues and make them more realistic.

Not all of them were designed to be super duper plot centric.

See: Thane, Samara/Morinth, Grunt, Mordin, Zaeed, Kasumi, Tali, Garrus.

Actually Mordin was pretty polt centric since you couldn't survive Horizon without him making that counter measure....... thing.

Aside from that, which was only helpful in that 1 scenario...

He wasn't all tht important.

I'm fine with the ME3 roaster...even more: it's the best ME roaster I've ever seen, of course it could have been better, but I find it great; most of my favourites are here and it's balanced for all my Shepards

Thanks Bioware !

Mass Effect 3 comes with a roaster?  Is that some new type of weapon?

All squadmates are heavy weapons :wizard:

(yes I meant roster )

Mass Effect 2 had way too many squadmates. There were so many that our interactions with them wound up being watered down and even the characters themselves got watered down. Legion can walk the Citadel, Ilium, and Omega without being noticed, Morinth has no real development as a character and is stuck using Samara's outfit, none of the characters interact with each other very much, and the character's abilities in combat are very limited. The problem is that everything is spread out because of how many squadmates there are.

ME3 needed to cut back on how many there were. It's one of the few things it is doing right.

Legion and being anywhere he wants is just game mechanics. It would be stupid to restrict acces to a squadmate just "because".

Morinth and her being Samara 2.0 is explained (Albeit very stupid).

Each squadmate having 3 powers is also just a game mechanic. They aren't going to be as powerful as Shepard, who can have like 8 powers, depending on class. That's the whole point. That's like complaining about why squadmates do less weapon damage per shot than Shepard.

When first Brought on-board SR-2, Garrus has two different lines, depending upon Shepard's Gender:

"Many Females find scars attractive.... of course, most of them are Krogan." If Shepard is Female.

"Everyone has been hitting up on me, time for you to get some action." *  To a Male Shepard.

EDIT: both are a bit paraphrased.

THis says much about Garrus' sexuality, I'd think.

* This was said to a Male Shepard that had left Ashley behind on Virmire (Kaidan is VS), and eventually romanced Tali.

First of all, we all have seen the rankings and polls where most of the top squad mates in the results are from ME1, second is the fact that many people have only 2-4 squad mates that they actually take regularly.

I am getting Ashley and Garrus back out there with me because they were my ME1 team and I missed them like hell in ME2 (plus I picked them because they were the cover squad in ME1 with default male Shep so it seemed most fitting as a player who likes following what BioWare picked to represent the series prior to release. They became my most trusted friends and allies.).

In ME3, each party member will have 4 powers, 2 of them unique to the character. So there is a connection there.

The number of squad mates doesn't concern me. It's a matter of who is going to be on my team that counts. I can honestly do fine without any new squad mates.

Anyway, i'm 100% sure Garrus will be SS romance option. Bio already annouced that there will be that kind of option in ME3, and, since you can only romance squadmates (which there are six at best, if OP is true), it doesn't leave too many guys to choose from to have gay romance, especially if you saved Ashley.

When it comes to same sex romances Dragon Age 2 set the pace for BioWare, at least that's what i think.

I think assuming you can only romance squad members is a stretch.   I mean you had Kelly in ME2, there's no reason that the only romancable characters are on your squad.

Aside from that I really hope that Dragon Age 2 didn't set the pace for Bioware so far as romances go.   Having a world where everyone is bisexual and out to hump the protagonist is just weird.  Of course for that matter I really hope Dragon Age 2 didn't set the pace for Bioware on anything, because that game was an atrocity.

That doesn't hold up to logic though since we know many former squadmates will be temporary squadmates in ME3. Having a squad the size of ME2's and having numerous temp squaddies would be dumb IMO.

Ah, the ME3 squad mate issue, the bane of my existence, the issue that will either make or break ME3 for me, the main thing that moan and **** and complain about.

Yes it is a step back.

I don't think any sane person would argue that ME2's 12 squad mates were a bit too much and I also get why Bioware are going with a smaller squad for ME3 but ME3's confirmed squad is dis-respectful to almost all of ME2's squad mates and it is dis-respectful to fans of these squad mates. Bioware can argue for as long as they want that ME3's smaller squad means that we will have better dialogue, more squad banter, etc but at the end of the day if I don't give a **** about anyone on the ME3 squad then I fail to see how I will be able to appreciate all the effort they have made. I'd much rather go into battle with the people I trust, the people I care about instead a squad made up of people I have little or no emotional attachment to.

I really do think that Bioware set themselves up to fail by introducing such a large squad in ME2, making it where any of them can get killed off and then decreasing the squad size in ME3.

When you introduce a huge cast of characters like this each new character you introduce creates a fan base for that character which is going to be pissed off if their favorite character doesn't make the ME3 squad.   In ME2 you had fanbases for 4 characters who might be irritated that their favorite character from ME1 didn't make the squad, now after introducing 10 new characters in ME2 that number has shot up to 11 pissed off fanbases.

The fact that none of the ten new characters introduced in ME2 made the cut to get into ME3 is really quite surprising.

I think fewer squadmates is better, but I also think the balance with this set of squadmates is off. I mean, in ME1, you had a squadmate that seemed to fill every class, so you could pick whoever was best suited to a situation, and had variety. You want a biotic, but you don't like Kaidan? Then you could take Liara or Wrex. This time, if you don't have Kaidan, then your only biotic is Liara. If you don't like her then you just have to either suck it up or go without a biotic.

Oh, but the old ones are developing. They just happen to do it in other places where Shepard simply isn't present.
Not to mention that some of them are too busy to be at Shepard's side all the time. They have their own problems, you know.
Like Thane, for example. His time is almost up.

You speak like it is the only way things can be, but remember what you said for when ME3 will be out and you will see that many characters actually doesn't have that much to do.
Nor does Grunt would actually have greater responsibility than going into battle with his battlemaster.

Rumor has it that one of the 2 unnanounced squadmates is a biotic and one is a tech.  So its probably not as bad as you think.   With fewer squadmates the power sets of the unnanounced squadmates is really important this time around since we don't have room to spare for characters who don't have a useful power set.

Totally agree, the lack of a Krogan really dissapointed me.   Wrex is still my favorite character and while I'd accepted that I probably wouldn't get him back in ME3,  I was pretty shocked to find out that I wouldn't get Grunt or any other Krogan.

Honestly with James Vega filling the tank role his Jersey Shore looking ass better be a really, really interesting character or I'm just going to spend the entire game resenting him for not being a space lizard.

I certainly hope you guys are right, i'm bisexual myself but changing all the squad members sexual preferences just to fit the player is not something that would go well with character developement, at least from what i've seen so far. Garrus never struck me as bi/gay.

The fact that he isn't gay is basically established in dialogue in ME2 (the reach and flexibility story, etc.), but what would he have to do to strike you as bi?

My thoughts exactly, i don't know what to expect of him. Since my mission squad has a free spot for soldier (all my Sheps are Soldiers + Garrus, but i need more) he better be damn interesting. It's not like i have much choice, i won't be going with Ash because i don't really like her attitude, Tali and Liara were always so weak i feel disgusted by their combat disabilities, and since i don't know anything about this "spoiler character" or DLC guy/girl/whatever, i'm assuming neither of them will be a full-blown soldier fit for my squad.

I never acctually liked biotics or tech in this game, it's just boring. I prefer to get full soldier squad and smash everything to pieces while i go W+M1, like in ME1, or stick to cover and create impenetrable barricade of 3 badass soldiers, like in ME2.

It's established that he is attracted to females, so he can't be gay, however that doesn't necessarily exclude bisexuality. However, as you stated, his dialogues never gave anything away about his attraction to man, so it's easy to assume that he's just straight. Fine by me.

If I walked in on him going to town on Jacob that would strike me.

Joking aside though in addition to the flexability story Garrus has a number of lines that make it pretty clear he fancies the ladies.    For example after he gets scarred if Male Shep tells him "you were always ugly Garrus" he responds along the lines of "You're just jealous the ladies always went after me".

If the M/M romance option is indeed one of the announced squad members my money would be on Vega or Kaiden.

I'm glad that there's no Krogan, I don't like them, besides, with Grunt Bioware shown that they don't have that imagination to build an interesting Krogan anymore (Wrex was the only one, Okeer had potential, too bad he's dead, Grunt is meh)

I'm alright with a smaller roster. ME1's was fine, but with all the connections from ME2 it would have been better, but I guess you get a more focused story lines. But yeah I wish you had a permanent Krogan team member, they have interesting points of views. Plus, I used Grunt, and especially Wrex a lot cause they were really fun to use, both from a gameplay sense and tactical sense.

Well Grunt was certainly no Wrex; but he had his moments.   The conversations you had with him were all pretty subpar; but he had some good little one liners during the missions.  The big problem with Grunt was that he was a stereotypical Krogan as opposed to Wrex and Okeer who really defied you preconceptions.  Wrex came off initially as kind of a brute; but as you got to know him you realized he was the most cunning member of your squad  while Okeer pretty much defied every Krogan social norm in the book.

I think the key with writing a good Krogan character and any character really is to not have a preconcieved notion of some strict archetype.   You need to use the character's culture or profession as a basis to build upon.

Legion should have gotten more response from others. Security should stop you, people should yell in fear. You should be forced to explain the situation or not take him to these locations to evade the trouble. The reaction on the flotilla was also very mild, considering the backstory. You should make decisions based on the story and not purely on gameplay mechanics. Bringing Mordon to Tuchanka should also caused more of a reaction such as insults from Krogan.

Morinth was explained, but that doesn't validate the pretty much non existant development of that character. There was potential in the idea which was not even scrached.

The limited amount of powers for squadmates can be called a game mechanic, but if they are supposed to be so unique it would have been nicer to have more unique powers and not 10 times pull. A problem that would be less obvious with less squadmates.
