Just incase anyone missed it here.

http://massively.joy...-swtor-fumbles/

Here is what happened yesterday:
The new patch 1.1 broke Ilum. With this "miracle" patch that was supposed to make everything better, due to faction imbalances that Bioware failed to design around, Republic were getting steamrolled in Ilum for hours and hours while Empire was gaining massive amounts of valor, enough for full sets of the best gear in the game. Ton's of people did this and this will set the landscape of PvP for the entire future of the game. Bioware's response? Said they were investigating "potential" issues and would come back with an official response "shortly." Nothing happened for 8 hours. All the while people on the forums DEMANDING a rollback.
Bioware comes back 8 hours later, doesn't even acknowledge that people had gained massive amounts of valor, does not announce a roll back. They had ONE get out of jail free card and they didn't take advantage of it. If that is not cause for concern about the future of the game I don't know what is. They had the chance to show everyone they could deliver and they FAILED.
After that, people started unsubscribing. That is when magically the button to unsubscribe in account settings disappeared. When people found a workaround by entering the URL directly, Bioware locked EVERY SINGLE THREAD on the topic and instead directed everyone to customer service (like that would ever help). They HAD the solution in front of them and Bioware actively tried to hide it.
That is when Bioware announced they were starting with the founders program. Of course, simply buying the game doesn't mean you are a founder, huh? You have to subscribe.
Later, the forums were completely taken down. Now they are back up and Bioware has issued a new PR video. Brilliant.

There are far more details to the story than this, too. Such as the UI having bugs with improperly displaying cooldowns, the anti-aliasing having ****** poor performance.

edit: I see this has kind of been posted before.

Well ****. That reminds me of when M$ took the ability to not auto renew off xbox.com only this is kinda worse. I'd really like to see what they have to say for themselves.

So is this where the whole "TORtanic" thing is coming from? Or are there other issues? Might do a trail for SWTOR one of these days but I don't have time to do the raiding or any of the high-level stuff in MMOs.

Not a big deal and already solved. I was there on Ilum getting spawn-camped. Its was a design flaw, but it was fixed within a day.

Things in game seem to get broken by patches on a semi-regular basis. Has happened with DA2 and probably other BW games so it's not to be completely unexpected.

But an MMO backfiring to such an extreme with no server rollback only serves to establish unbalancing the game to a degree which cannot be fixed. Many Empire individuals have claimed some of the best PVP gear (hindering Republic PVP), the economy is screwed up due to the duplication glitch and even non-hackers have a lot of money due to the pre-nerf slicing.

Patches shouldn't break things further in an MMO, they need to absolutely work. Anything broken in an MMO forever hinders the community.

Haven't had any issues at all on a technical level, except for the ability delay thing on my Jedi (they're working on that last I read) and that problem with the memory leak on Taris. Hmm, hadn't heard about the Ilum stink other than a friend saying he got stuck there & camped for a while, but he didn't seem to care terribly much. *shrug*

People unsubscribe, because other people got higher valor for one day? Wow, humanity never disappoints in being stupid.

I had a couple of reactions...

They had the chance to show everyone they could deliver and they FAILED.

My perception of MMOs is that half the kids on there are griefers, so that all kind of comes with the territory. Unfortunate that a patch would exacerbate the problem but I can't be moved to feel this is a big deal. I'd rather callously disregard it with a comment like, "told you so."

After that, people started unsubscribing. That is when magically the button to unsubscribe in account settings disappeared. When people found a workaround by entering the URL directly, Bioware locked EVERY SINGLE THREAD on the topic and instead directed everyone to customer service (like that would ever help). This part does sound kind of messed up, I guess. If all the assumptions of ill intent on BioWare's part are true, anyway.

Reads like someone with an axe to grind rather than something I can easily believe without any proof. The beta for TOR piqued my interest, but as an Australian I "can't" play anyway, so it's a bit of a moot point for me

I'm concerned about the unsubscribe part (if it's accurate), but the imbalance is just someone whinging because they were on the receiving end of a class imbalance. It's an MMO - that happens.

As for the quality of the game - who knows, I felt the voice acting was a little bit unnecessary, but the was their gamble to improve storytelling and player engagement - only time will tell if it worked or not. I dislike the fact that some people are desperate to see it go down in flames - do people really have nothing better to do with their lives than hate on something that many people spent years of their life working on? It's a sad world we live in.

Wait, so the end result is the Imperials have an advantage over the Galactic Republic? Sounds about right to me. This bug is closer to a fix. ;p

I've played enough MMOs to know new patches can and will add bugs. No developer can avoid it.

While I don't play MMOs(only ever played 2 days of a ten day free trial of WoW), I remember friends in high school talking about how patches made certain classes in WoW better than others, etc etc.

So I guess that's expected. But this sounds like its to some crazy extent.

Fortunately I don't play any MMO games...I can understand that new patches indeed might not be perfect right from the start, but what the OP wrote sounds serious...Let's hope it gets fixed soon then. I sincerly hope there indeed was no ill intent of EA/BioWare involved. I tend to be rather cynical as off lately, though.

The problem with a full role back is many many people who didn't exploit will get punished as well. Which will result in the same anti Tor I'm going to cancel my account now, TOR fail propaganda and most likely in a larger scale.

I knew the patch broke Ilum and caused a number of other bugs, but I didn't know they were being such a colossal ass about it. Geez.

Yep, if you watch the video of the slaughter on Ilum....it was like Order 66 all over again.

I was there, man. On Ilum. (Keller's Void Server, 50 sage.) It was unbelievable the number of 50 sorcerers spamming force lightning AoEs on the spawn point while juggernauts/powertechs tanked the turrets and just laughed at them.

I cannot even begin to describe the massacre it was. Hundreds of Imperials against around forty-fifty Republic players. We spawned and immediately died. The only way I got off-planet was to queue into a warzone and abandon it to the fleet. (Or force/armor sprint, but you could get stunned about thirty times within the time you got force armor applied so...yeah.)

So glad they changed it so fast.

I wish people would use the Old Republic thread I made since this would get locked but anyways look what the "fix" to Ilum did. It's amazing how the factions come together and prove how you can't fight human nature. Bioware needs to learn from because forced world pvp won't work with such little rewards and 3 factions fighting each other would be so much better. Look at WoW's wintergrasp that was worth fighting for because you got a raid and buffs for the entire continent.

Oh please... That was really nothing, the amount of valor gained wasn't that extreme. The valor gains were partially bugged for a lot of people anyway. If few people gained more than 10 valor ranks that day, I'd be really surprised. Most gained 1-5. Champion's gear is really easy to come by and it's not that much worse than Battlemaster. Some people just need a reason to whine about anything they do with this game.

I am not saying it's flawless, I am not even saying I'll play it for too long. I still think it's pretty nice MMO, while there have been some game breaking bugs, they've taken steps forward after launch.

Tbh, Repubs on my server got what they deserved. We were giving them chance to come and play, but instead they ran behind the turrets, only to come out when it was 5-8 vs 40-50. Though it didn't last too long and it was hardly enjoyable to either side, but people need their dailies done.

Heh.

Electronic Arts saw its shares rise more than 2% Friday, gaining back some of
the ground lost in the previous session after an analyst questioned the
health of its highest profile videogame launch of late – “Star Wars: The
Old Republic.”

The bounce-back came after three other brokers issued notes Friday
morning disputing the concerns, saying in essence that the online
multi-player game that hit the market on Dec. 20 is performing in line
with expectations. The game is a big deal for EA, representing its
effort to go after some of the lucrative massive-multiplayer, or MMO,
segment that is currently ruled by the “World of Warcraft” franchise of
rival publisher Activision Blizzard.

“We believe that these concerns are overblown, and that the company’s
revenues are tracking ahead of the high end of guidance for the fiscal
year,” wrote Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities.
On Thursday, Brean Murray analyst Todd Mitchell cut his price target
on EA shares, saying that “initial sales appear to be below
expectations, and casual observation of early play is causing us to
rethink our churn assumptions.”
