I also used to think things like this were advancements, that is until I put things into context, for combat it's clumsy and slow reacting, now if the dialogue was via microphone, in other words I could have a natural conversation(within the confines of the game dialogue of course) I'd definitely call that advancement.Mel M wrote...
I personally think it's an advancement in gaming and if it's implemented right, it can really enhance the overall experience.
Again, the command wheel was slow and clumsy. Anything that pauses the action, even for a split second, can be seen as slow and clumsy. You could be absolutely right and the voice command is not as responsive as it needs to be... but we'll wait and see.
EDIT: Just saw a vid about 6 months old demo-ing voice commands in battle and it was NOT slow and clunky at all. During the a battle sequence in about the 3 min mark, Shep was able to do a singularity and concussive shot attack in a matter of a second. While this can be done quicker with the directional pad, it's definitely faster than going into the command wheel.
I'm optimistic, but we'll wait and see.

Don't plan on it. I mostly have the Kinect for use on PC as a 3D scanner though anyhow. Why does it have to be on Kinect anyhow? Plug in a headset right? Its only audio commands wasn't it?
The voice recognition software/hardware is provided by the Kinect. The microphone system on the headset was only designed for communication.

Mass Effect 3 finally gives me a reason to use it that actually appeals to me.

No. Expending the 1 joule of energy to hit a button and getting an immediate response is far more efficient then spending 100 kilojoules and wasting time by speaking to my system, and waiting for the crappy VR system to decode, translate into game code, and activate.
Depends on button placement. Sometimes it's easier to just speak a command rather than pause and go looking.

you know mass effect was ment to be tactical, not a gears of war type action game. plus instead of yelling invusal powers i can pull up the power weel and select 3 different powers way quicker, because i noticed in the kinect videos that the kinect has a 1-3 second delay, and those 1-3 seconds could mean life or death in video games.Mel M wrote...

I'm not going to voice every single 'examine' or 'open' command, sure, but the ability to give verbal commands to your squad during combat has improved the fluidity and flow of enemy encounters tremendously.
If I ever have to see the power / weapon wheels again during combat, it'll be too soon.

I'm not really understanding how the Kinect turns this game into Gears of War 4. You issue the EXACT same commands, only via voice commands and without having to access the command wheel. Mass Effect is like Gears of War, then it's strictly because of the gameplay. All I'm doing is simply responding to people who have repeatedly said it was going to be slow and clunky and never actually used or possibly seen it in action.
As far as response times, I can see how a micro-second response time might mean life and death in a multiplayer first person shooter deathmatch, but I never ONCE felt the need for that kind of reaction time in ME1 or ME2, even on the harder difficulty modes. Back to your point about the game being tactical, I found if I positioned my squadmates right, most fights were a cakewalk.
The kinect mainly changes the gameplay in regards to not accessing the command wheel. If you can maintain the same tactical feeling WHILE not interrupting the flow of a battle, then what's wrong with that?
EDIT: Also, I looked at the combat portion of the vid again and I NEVER saw any instance where the delay was more than a second, if that. MAYBE the singularity command to Liara, but that's debatable. Unless your vid was doing some major buffering, I NEVER saw anything close to 3 seconds.

There was another game that used voice, TC Total War or something? I don't remeber that requireing the Kinect.

If it's responsive, yes, of course. Why wouldn't I try something new?
No way it can be responsive as pressing a button. It's another console gimmick. Kinect hasn't taken off, they have to sell outadted tech somehow.

Too expensive, TV's not far away enough from armchair.
Actually for the audio its better to be close or you'll have to yell at it. Thats my major gripe too, I don't want to yell at the TV. Better for all around me if I'm not yelling at the game to do something. LOL
