I've played games in this series on and off since the original on Playstation. It's been a mixed bag. Some installments were great and others sucked. Hell, Tomb Raider 2 almost made quit playing those games right there. That said, I never felt the games needed to feel darker. I'm so sick of grittiness and so called "mature themes". All I care about is that the elements of a game's plot and tone feel right.
What drew me to Tomb Raider was that at the time, female protagonists in games were even rarer than today. Then comes along Lara who is an intelligent, athletic badass that takes crap from no one. That was unheard of in the mid 90s. Of course the sexualization was annoying, but at least it didn't pollute the actual gameplay so much as influence Lara's design, outfits, and what kind of fans the series commonly attracted.
This new one could be good. I'm almost certainly buying it. My only reservation is they don't go overboard with this "vulnerable" novice Lara. I better still see a capable and clever woman underneath or the struggle or I will be pissed. Likewise, I'm leery that this clothing degradation thing could be a cheap way to titillate the player. At least that's how I've usually seen that feature used with female characters in the past. I'm not raising my expectations high, but I will keep my fingers crossed.
I would say being someone who's 22/23 who's all alone and shipwrecked on a deserted unknown island trying to find her way back home calls for something of a dark theme. If it were an experienced Lara who's merely hunting artifacts then a theme similar to Uncharted would be fitting, but the story's already been set up as being more real (no winged demons or clones from hell)
I agree with that, not enough tough no nonsense female leads in games and too many teenage girls masquerading as tough women who only serve the purpose to swoon over the protagonist. Lara is very different in that respect and this one seems like it wont have the opportunity to sexualize her. Hard to do with a rebar through your abdomen and gashes on your face and arms.
Well, there definitely be some degree of faliure on her part since this is the very first time Lara would be doing anything adventerous and its not the kind she planned on. She was on an expedition but is quickly left on her own and fend for herself which is something totally new to her. I imagine we'll see the kind of Epic that takes a hero from infancy to actually proving themselves, which is what the devs said the story is truly about.
