Ok, so this game reminds me of why I liked Assassin's Creed so much in the first place. I had never played a game that handled interaction with city crowds like this. Also, I love rooftop swordfighting where you can grab your adversary and throw him to his death.
Some minor spoilers:
Assassin's Creed II is probably what the first one should have been - practically all of it in the Animus and very little interacting in the lab. A lot of gameplay features have been improved. Also, Ezio is a much more likable character than Altair because you can better relate to him. But Altair is still held in high regard by this game's mythos as a sort of penultimate assassin.
Lots more to do here. The ridiculous flag collecting quests are gone to be replaced by some not-so-ridiculous quests except for the feather quest maybe. Also there is a REASON to collect everything from feathers to armor and weapons - it adds to your income which you need to improve your villa and buy more weapons and armor.
There is no selection for difficulty and the game really isn't that difficult. The Tomb-raider-ish parts of it are extremely simplistic. Ezio's free-running capability takes a lot of the challenge out of this except on those areas where you have to stop fre-running or go way back to a much earlier point and start your ascention again.
The story is much better and better executed, mainly because of how likeable Ezio is. At least as far as I have gotten, it is.
If you liked Assassin's Creed, you may want to rent this first because a lot of it is very similar to the first - kind of an Assassin's Creed 1.75. It should have been given a non-numbered name because the graphics, crowd engine, and overall gameplay are pretty much the same as the first.
