Did I play ME2 when Zaeed was announced? Have I never seen any of the other billion TPS out there with roidragebros that are the stars of every single cliched action game out there? The squad didn't need another human due to how small it is, and it especially didn't need Ashley mk 2.
Right, Vega is definitely going to be a poor character because... uh... Ashley and Zaeed and action games!
What made Mass Effect so great is the diversity. I can't help it if you cannot grasp simple concepts. The game did not need Vega at all, and if it's for his abilities, a Krogan would have been much more interesting.
Kaiden (Human), Ashley (Human), Shepard (Human), Liara (Humanoid), Tali, Wrex and Garrus were in the first game. 3/7 are human.
Kaiden (Human), Ashley (Human), Vega (Human), Shepard (Human), Liara (Humanoid), Tali, Garrus, DLC character (Unknown--probably human). 4/8 are human. Yep, definitely getting smaller.
It's actually 3/8. Ashley or Kaiden, not both. And rumors are the DLC Character are not human either.
Of course, since this is a Human Alliance Vessel, shouldn't humans be within most of the squad anyways?

Vega serves a purpose beyond being just a new squad mate.
A new human character, that fits the more traditional soldier through and through, that will be appealing to the crowd that love COD and straight up shooters. This will also provide an easy to relate to character that experiences everything for the first time like you as a new player would.
So he helps get a crowd that may not play ME, into ME and helps keep them there.
I wasn't keen on him before seeing this, but afterwards I am more endeared to him.
Yes, the casual audience will pick up on that immediately. He's a razor away from becoming "Bald Space Marine #3405986." I think people tend to exaggerate how (not that) big the ME games are. People don't jump into the third game in a series often nor do they do it in such a crowded genre like shooters.
I don't care too much about Vega. Just skip his cutscenes and leave him on the ship. What I am worried about is how dead and lifeless him and Shepard look in that video. Yikes, it's creepy.

He doesn't seem like a bad guy...I hope they don't make him like BW made Jacob: useless and annoying.
Jacob isn't useless or annoying. He's just kinda cold to non romance PCs, and overtly sexual to romance PCs.
Apart from that, he'll probably end up being just like Jacob. Cool headed, doesn't b!tch and moan about his problems, etc etc.

Heh.
He looks pretty basic and "dumb". Not sure why they spend time if they are going to create the most stereotypical meat-head they could ever have.
Not a fan.
It's a bit more than that. It's his voice, his physical appearance but also his general commentary we've seen in the videos.

Actually I noticed that too - even on the PS3 version of ME2. The engine seems to have some kind of plasticky overlay on it. I don't know - but they just don't seem as sharp with textures and as realistic with the faces.
Its really not an issue, but it is interesting.
Edit: Should clarify I think overall the game looks much better, especially with lighting, shadows and depth of field. Just the faces seem to have lost a little in sacrifice.

ME1: 2/6 human 33%
ME2: 5/12 human 42%
ME3: 2/7 human 29%
So ME3 does indeed have the smallest amount.

What exactly can you tell from a character that is well-muscled, has a Mohawk and that style of voice?

Don't bother with people like that, I know they are hard to ignore, the are the worst kind of RPG purists you'll see, thankfully they are a minority on BSN, a very loud minority.

rather than that i think it's more for people that heard of shepard and of mass effect but didn't play the other two games rather than shooter fans, the character of vega himself gives off, at least to me, the sense that he heard of shepard's exploits throughout the galaxy and came to admire him/her becoming ecstatic(too strong a word perhaps) over the thought of being able to work beside this legendary commander. all in all he's to represent everyone who heard of mass effect and shepard but never got around to try out the games.
legion might have some competition in shepard fanboyism department.

So we saw about 10-15 seconds of that "expressionless" fight and now people are saying the game's facial engine in general fails? No chance that it just be one silly moment where things don't quite work out, like Sheploo's "rape face"? lol bsn
*facepalm* did you actually read what was written?
