Damn...you must really hate the ME3 squad then.
I actually do. It's easily the most boring they've ever done, although I am basing this off of how they have been in the past games. Liara always had the potential to be a good character, but she's always been terrible. With her new attitude, maybe I'll like her finally.
Tali had a cool backstory (Bioware went a bit too thick with the displaced Israelite motif though) and was nice enough to chat with, but she was always a pretty useless member to have on the team in either of the previous games.
Kaiden was not only useless, but absolutely boring, and Ashley was...your stereotypical subordinate.
Vega looks like Ashley mk 2 in every possible way, except now that it's a "dude", he has to be a roidbro.
Garrus is the only so far announced character that has any personality or a good backstory at all (based off of the previous games, so who knows...Bioware might do a 180 and suprise me with compelling characters).
Miranda, Wrex, and Mordin had more personality and entertainment value in their pinkies than most of the entire squad combined in ME3. Hell, even Legion did too.
It really feels like this is how things went down (even if it's just an exaggeration):
Bioware: So we would like to show you our initial draft at the ten characters that you'll be able to have on the roster.
EA: You're only going to have time for seven. There's multiplayer to think about.
Bioware: (X's out three characters). So we would like to show you our inital draft at seven characters.
EA: You are missing a fan favorite. You need to add the fan favorite/love interest no matter how terrible they are, because it will boost sales by 30%.
Bioware: (X's out an interesting character)
EA: Too many aliens and not enough humans. Humans are better than aliens and humans kill aliens.
Bioware: *Sigh (X's out two more characters).
EA: Not enough Fenix up in dis house yo!
Bioware: ...

I didn't know 99% of the characters in Super Mario were typical marines.DaJe wrote...
If I can send him to give his live for a species (not just humanity) I will maybe respect him more, but until then he is just a typical Marine like 99% of characters in games, that is not special or interesting in any way.

What part of Koopa Troopa did you not understand to be lean, mean, fighting machine, son?

As for his character traits, he's energetic, eager, yet solid and calculating, so I'm seeing little to fault here.

As a military affiliate, I lost my **** at this, even if that's more of an Army thing...well, before their standards went to crap.

I am kind of amused by people judging characters by the very first impressions we get. I mean, its not like learning more about characters is what takes them from cliche or caricature to fully realized character or anything.
Generally agreed that the animations are off though. But this is kind of par for the course for Bioware, unfortunately. DA, DA2, ME and ME2 just... aren't really good looking games in a lot of regards.
Well in some cases, people judge quite accurately. My initial impression of Jack was exactly what we got. I didn't like her arc. I didn't know what it would entail, but I her character (and the apparent change you can make in her) coming from 10 miles away.

Lol. I read both of those while having the actual in game voices in my head.

Not to mention it will allow me to have a true Alliance Squad like back in ME1 with Kaiden and Ash. Now I can have Ash and Vega, apart from other variations I will try.
Its hard to make a character with impact when they are introduced in the final game of the series with no previous interaction or information but I'm thankful he wasn't thrust in with no reason, at least Bioware put some effort into making him fit his role as the 'Holy ****!' guy.

Regarding James' character. I couldn't help but agreeing with what many said about him being a buffed-up, thickheaded soldier that's more shallow than a puddle in Tuchanka. But, AndrewRogue has a point about keeping judgement until we actually see the character in the actual game ourselves. I mean, who knows? Maybe James has an intense backstory twist that would blow us away, hm? No one expected the simpleton and cliche Agent Brandt to have actually be involved with the death of Ethan Hunt's wife in M:I:IV, after all, but I digress.
Oh, and resemblences with Liev Schreiber are definitely high. In fact, that was the first person I thought about when I first saw him in the leaked beta footage (reunion with Ashley). "What was Cotton Weary doing in there?" lol

Agreed. Never disliked Vega in any case, but his first look before the change to what we have now looked cooler.hangmans tree wrote...
I have to say James convinced me as a character, and Freddie was very lively and happy bout his character I think. IMO he sold me the whole package
What I DIDNT LIKE was sparring with Shep and his eyes fixed in some dead space beside Vega... will BW work on expressions and line of sight before release?

I like him because, as Shepard we have seen all the crazy and unbelievable things the galaxy has to offer like Reapers and Thresher Maws and Geth. Vega really is the "new guy" being the Alliance Marine who just knows his duty and now he is thrust into the spotlight with the Hero and his responses to it are amusing to say the least.

I agree. I am curious to see how the war will change his personality. Anyway the wait (3/6/12) is KILLING ME!

PS. Did they only make this one to quell some Vega hate? personally I didn't see anything wrong with him, If your a soldier you'd want to train as much as possible because your life depends on your strength.
