Blue screen and lost saves

I've got the 4 in 1 set.  I have installed Baldur's Gate and TotSC.  I've also installed the official TotSC patch.  I'm running all of this with Vista, with service pack 2, 32-bit OS.

I've had a couple of problems.  First, I can't get to Durlag's Tower - it hangs, asking me for CD 6, but not reading it.  The latest problem is similar.  I'm in the Fire Leaf Forest area, and suddenly I've got a plain blue screen saying "Baldur's Gate Error: Media removed from drive.  Please insert Baldur's Gate CD 6 into CD Rom Drive."  I had the Baldur's Gate CD in at the time, so I swapped over to the TotSC CD, but it just whirred for a bit, and otherwise nothing changed.

I read about installing BG anywhere except Program Files.  Unfortunately only just now.  I find I have installed the programme there.  I thought about reinstalling elsewhere.  However, when I looked in the save folder to check that I'd be able to move those files across, I see the last save is five days ago.  There should have been files from today.  I'm concerned that if I uninstall the programme, then reinstall it elsewhere, I'll lose whatever saved files I have, wherever they are.

Can anyone suggest a good course of action?  I'm not a programmer so it needs to be relatively simple.  Thanks!

More on this. I've played it from a save and the crash occurred at the same point - fighting Vax and Zal. This time I could only get away from the blue screen with Ctrl Alt Del (before Alt Tab worked). I then saw a dialogue box with "An assertion failed in D:\\Dev\\chitin\\ChVideo,cpp at line number 5389".

Hope that helps....

I recommend that you do a complete (click options & put a tick in every box) reinstall... sounds to me as if your computer is having trouble getting the files it needs from the disc drive in a timely fashion.

You could see if this thread helps you

Note also that when installed in program files the save games are held in a different location, so that will be why you can't see your recent saves.

Oh dear, well, I'll give it a go! Thanks for the advice. I hope I can find those saved files. I guess all the effort will be worth it....

Assuming I do find the old saved files (have done a thorough search and there's no sign of them, but I've checked inside the game and they're definitely somewhere), does anyone know whether they'd crash the reinstalled version of the game? In other words, is the misdirection in the saved file, or just in the programme?

Try the thread below for help in finding your saved game - I think it's worth trying your old save once you've reinstalled.

Glory be, it worked. Complete reinstall including ToSC patch, panic as I couldn't find the saved files, but the thread you suggested got me close enough to find them. Have fought Zal and Vax without crashing. Many thanks to both of you! Can't wait to check out Durlag's Tower at long last....
