I mean she's escaped death 4 times, and then sent her horned devil to kill me! My character is a wizard, and so extremely squishy, even with the best protection I've got... I used at least a dozen different protection spells... He's a tiefling, level 16.. 8th level spells.
I used Qara to kill the animus, but  then she got killed by the assassins.... I'm starting to think the only way to get through this is cheating... Because clearly this battle was not designed for squishies. Actually this game doesn't really seem to like wizards in general :(

The most useful protection spells are improved invisibility or displacement and mirror image. Damage reduction will help, but you want to try to make your wizard harder to hit. Anything you can do to raise armor class wouldn't hurt too.

Divine power, divine favor, and righteous might turn Zjhaeve into a decent combatant in a punch. Stone body boosts her defense. Having your wizard cast haste helps her future, and makes it easier for your squishes to run away if they are being chased down.

In terms of offensive magic try banishment on the horned devil. Alternatively, you can go with all out cheese. Lock down annoying enemies with bigby's forceful hand and bigby's grasping hand. When there are only one or two targets left, obliterate them with issac's greater missile storm.

Wizards are perfectly viable in NWN2 once you get the hang of them. They just come with a steeper learning curve than melee classes.

You should also have Zjhaeve with you in this battle. She has a few options for disabling mutliple attackers (the assassins) with the spells she has available at this level. Storm of Vengeance (she should be able to cast this) is a winner with the low Fort saves the assassins have (they'll be stunned). If she hasn't got this yet - Firestorm and Hammer of the Gods. The assassins will bunch as they close, so casting an Area of Effect spell at one will inevitably hit others.

Qara has a plethora of offensive spells. If she is surrounded, try Fireburst (or, even better, Greater Fireburst if you've had her know this spell). Firebrand is another goodie. With the assassin's low Fort saves, even Bewildering Cloud (?) is effective against them.

Additionally, if you chose the right conversation options, you should have Jalboun on your team during the fight. Haste him and watch him go.

I agree with Seagloom that casting Stoneskin, or another suitable defensive spell, is useful because the backstabs of the assassins can disrupt spellcasting even at high concentration skill levels.

While some spellcasters (like clerics) can make decent melee'ers, it is best to stick with what they do best - cast spells to destroy/disable their enemies. With good tactics (and it is a steep learning curve indeed) a well-set up spellcaster rules against melee (well, except when it's Monks on the opposite team!).

Clerics are an exception to that, I think. A cleric can be a better archer or warrior than classes dedicated to that role. With the right spells and divine might, they can turn a weapon as innocuous as a dart, deadly. Their damage without Stormlord levels might not match say, a weapon master's, but they make up for it with spellcasting.

I agree on storm of vengeance. Great suggestion there. I forgot it wasn't exclusive to druids. However, I think Zjhaeve is better used fulfilling a melee role here after casting storm of vengeance. Lokiwolf's wizard and Qara should be more than adequate to lay down magical smack. Neither of them can buff or cast heal, though. Jalboun is sadly very weak. He needs coddling to survive the battle.

Another suggestion I forgot to mention earlier: try casting glass doppelganger on the horned devil. I'm pretty sure it falls into the 15HD limit.
