I'm gonna take a guess that I'm the only person whose never met a hipster.
You are not alone. I consider them mythical creatures like Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster.

I've also noticed many point out to a fashion-design student a hipster simply because of his/her obscure taste. The same goes for music, to a degree.
This spectrum is really really wide, by these qualities alone. Though there are in actuality those who can be successfully called such, it doesn't seem to say much to me, really.
But the real mythological entity is the "common man".
I'd rather say a hipster is a snob, really, but not retaining to aristocracy (as were the original snobs - Oscar Wilde and co), but to bohemians and other people with actually different values than the almost mythological "common man".
edit: I'm confused... so I can't really answer the question in the original post. I bet I would have nothing against a person who is often called a hipster, but another person with the same tag could seem unbecoming. So the answer's I don't hate hipsters. It's just a tag, really...

"And if you look over to your right folks, you'll see the famed hipster district of San Francisco. It's quiet now, but legend has it they held a drum circle for 40 days and 40 nights to protest the legal action taken by Samsung against Apple."

That'd be the kind of t-shirt a hipster would wear.

Sound like standard Bohemians/Trendies to me, just another social group for other groups to rally against or align themselves with.

A person is independently minded because he/she likes art and wears jeans and a jacket (both very practical outwear)?

If we were to continue this thread for a thousand years, I do not think anybody could bring it to a more fitting and excellent conclusion than that post.

I'm very independent - I wipe my own bottom and everything!
Oh wait... independently minded...
Yes. I have opinions - along with the other few thousand/million people who have similar views to me on topics, I'm sure

And this is reflected by your preference for jeans and jackets and music?
(ain't criticizing anyone here - but it's still a wonder how many people generalize based on unrelevant info... I, at least, am still not as smart as to judge a person by his/her appearance).
