XP - How quickly should I be getting it?

Hey all,

I've had a few aborted playthroughs of BG1, and now I'm trying again. In the times I've tried to play it, it always seems like my XP isn't as high as it should be. I was on the final chapter and still was tens of thousands of points away from the cap, and I had done most of the quests in the main game (excluding TotSC). One of the things that I haven't been doing is grinding; is going back to already-explored areas to kill respawned monsters a common practice? Or should I just go through Ulgoth's beard and the rest of the TotSC dungeons? I'd rather not, as I'm not a big fan of non-plot battles and I'd like to get into BG2 fairly quickly. Am I expected to do just about every sidequest and explore every area?

One thing that I'm doing differently this time is taking a 4-person party instead of the full 6, which, in addition to freeing up money for earlier magic items, is helping my xp intake. Is this an acceptable solution, or could I do just be getting better XP in other ways? I've got the NPC project, so I'd really like to make room for more banter.

I guess what I'm asking is "How quickly should I be getting XP, will it get me to the cap, and is there a reliable (yet non-cheating) way to make this process go faster?"

The amount of XP you get depends on the way you play the game. It is possible to get to the final battle with Sarevok having got no XP at all. On the other hand it's also possible to be at the XP cap before even exploring the Nashkel mines. Bear in mind that the cap for vanilla BG was 89,000. It was only raised to 161,000 by TotSC, so this gives you some idea of the XP the designers originally expected.

My impression is that grinding is not at all common. If you really want to do that then trying to sleep repeatedly somewhere you're likely to be ambushed (like the pirate cave) is a quick way to do it. As you've noted reducing party size also helps speed up XP acquisition. You could try a solo run if you want to take this a bit further.

Beyond that I really wouldn't worry about XP. There's very little advantage in being at 161,000 rather than, say, 100,000 when you get to BG2.

I usually go for a smaller party at earlier levels to accelerate level gain. I usually hit the XP Cap right before the last fight, although I have TotSC installed.

the 'chaos' scroll at sorcerer's sundries costs 1200 gold and gives you 5000 xp. simply read it, then erase it from your spell book, and buy it again. the store has an infinite supply, so you can convert all the gold you don't use to XP. set your game difficulty to easiest while you do this, set it back to normal afterwards.

there is the non-farming option of having the mage learn every scroll you happen to come across. this will net you more experience.

Does difficulty on which you play affect experience you receive?
