With the end of the Does anyone else dislike anime thread, I felt there was one less topic to frequent. To replace the hole, this thread must be created, brought to life!

Do you like/dislike anime (/manga)? What are your opinions about some of the specific ones you've seen recently? Do Japanese really have a diverse animation scene, or are the tags "shonen", "seinen" etc not so meaningful?

I mainly wanted to start here, because I actually watched some Dragon Ball (the original) recently. It was funny, because it's very different than DBZ, much less the usual scream-and-fight shonen, more like a gag anime. Though what really strikes me is the difference between dubbed and subbed. The English-languaged one is totally a different anime - they skipped all words that are perceived "bad" in the west - and replaced it with very dull and parental-rating-system content. It's not just words, episodes are just dubbed meaningless and without anything funny, in the process.

I guess the audience for this one was both adults and children in Japan, with an attitude more tolerant towards topics that could make westeners mad. In America, it is dull, and not at all funny.

What do you guys think (Some Geth?)?

Nope, it's the right thread for this. If people would not give their opinions, the thread would die out soon.

I am currently halfway through season 3 of Hell Girl. It's the best recent series I've come across. High production values, great writing, and fascinating characters.

We can only hope. After anime killed my father, I've made it my life's goal to stamp out this goofy crap from existence.

Therefore I declare eternal war on anything NOT anime. Including the oxygen you breathe....

I agree that it isn't actual art. It's more a medium that supports the music and unique (often philosophical and psychological, sometimes hilarious) themes, in my personal point of view. But I also think that Some Geth and others have plenty of vigor to be opposed to this statement - and also a valid argument or two.

Yes, nothing cannot be something. XD
(I'm not laughing at your comment btw - it's funny as this has been a "relevant" topic in metaphysics.)

..............................
Though I'd like to edit myself a bit - I think animes can have art in their visuals, but mostly don't.
It's just like any genre/scene really, only that there are much more diverse and um.. "dynamic" themes and topics in anime imo (both in comparison to the 1. visual side of anime, and 2. other genres).

I was sucked into anime when I was a kid back in the 90s( I was probably about 9-10 years old) and they played an awesome old anime called Tekkaman Blade(aka. Teknoman in English)on one of the morning cartoon shows here in Australia.

Both my brother and I were obsessed with that show and I used to watch it before going to school everyday. That's when my passion for anime began.

Currently I am watching Clannad After Story, waiting for the second half of Fate Zero:wub: and probably going to start watching Sengoku Basara Season 2 soon.

Clannad was brilliant all the way (especially the music). But I really didn't get it with Fate/Stay Night.

How is Sengoku Basara, by the way? I've not played the game, nor heard of the anime, only looked up the wiki right now - but can you draw any comparisons?

(I have, however, enjoyed other titles based on video-games. Aside Clannad, an example would be Persona: Trinity Soul)

I got drawn into anime with some of the shows that were brought over to North America, chopped up and re-written for Saturday morning. Robotech, G-Force/Battle of the Planets and Astroboy were some favourites.

I also grew up with being able to rent some of the Force Five anime shows on VHS, so I got to see giant robot shows like Starvengers, Danguard Ace and Grandizer. Mecha anime is still my favourite today.

Of course, I watch some of the shows now and they're pretty dated, and some of the original programs weren't very good to begin with, like Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada. Heck, the original Gatchaman wasn't even that good.

But now I really want to watch those old giant robot shows again, like Getter Robo and UFO Robot Grendizer. I think I'd still like them.

I agree about Clannad. What didn't you get about Fate/Stay Night? As a fan of magic and action anime I really took to it and Saber remains one of my favourite characters  in anime.
Sengoku Basara is quite a quirky anime and game. I only heard about it because of Samurai Warriors and those two share the same historical setting and characters. It's basically a re-telling  of the Warring States period with a modern twist. For example, Masamune Date and his followers are depicted as punks and often he shouts random "cool"phrases in Japanese English while he's charging into battle and his horse has exhaust pipes coming out of it like a motorbke etc, It's all very absurd and over the top but also full of drama and really epic action.

i grew up on old school anime. being a 21 year old in this day and age, i grew up watching Gundam, pokemon, DBZ, Fullmetal Alchemist. it was all good. i'm actually disappointed with the anime market atm, everything just seems to cliche for me. Although, i just made a mental note of watching high school of the living dead lol

I first got into anime just because of cartoon network when they started showing Dragonball Z.

Around that time, the earliest anime I remember watching after that was Tenchi Muyo, Outlaw Star, Ronin Warriors, Rurouni Kenshin, and Cowboy Bebop,

But most of all, I remember when I was in high school and I had started living with my dad, every morning before going to school I would watch Zoids: Chaotic Century and Guardian Force. I'd love to find the DVDs and watch it all over again.

And Ronin Warriors I only caught the tail end of it. I had the chance to buy the DVDs, but I wasn't entirely sure about it. Now I kind of wish I had, but it was about 150 for the series and then 100 for the OVAs, if I remember correctly.

Anyway, here's a list of the ones I can remember that I have watched over the years:

Rurouni Kenshin
Outlaw Star
Cowboy Bebop
Rave Master
Samurai Champloo
Witchblade
Basilisk
Zoids Chaotic Century and Guardian Force
Tenjho Tenge
Air Gear
Tenchi Muyo!
Gundam Wing
G Gundam (can't stand to watch anything, but these two)
