Thematics is the most vital component to demonstrating Naruto's terrible writing, I think and that alone could account for a shutdown.
Naruto has frequently become contrary to its own themes (you could pull tons of dialogue out of the Pain saga that absolutely makes no sense with prior ideas), or become such a slave to demonstrating new themes that it retcons or revises preivously established information (i.e. Gaara's "oh his village DID love him all along!" plot which is basically idiotic because it defined his character and he ALREADY GOT PAST THAT).
They really are confused.
Naruto started as an episodic series where small teams of ninja perform tasks for important higher ups-- effectively a heroes-for-hire scenario. The reason the Zabuza arc was so magnificent was because it entirely worked with the context of the series at that time (before it basically erases any non-ninja entities in the series), had very well-established and defined heroes and villains whose writing worked together to have a theme that related entirely to Naruto as a main character. The villains themselves were even very balanced too if you want to account for characterization. When at the end, Zabuza betrays Gato for the "benefit" of the main characters, it is entirely organic with where his character was headed.
It even had some pretty tragic elements to it that did tug at the heart strings and it's all because of how tightly put together it was. Kishimoto would continuously try and try again to revisit the themes of companionship and loyalty and etc, but he would never again have reasons why. They would continue to get hamfisted and nonsensical as his world continued to fall apart (at this point in the story, the whole Ninja Villages thing has completely and entirely lost any believability as an entity and is basically floating in a void of non-narrative) and his characters began to eat themselves alive.
It's all just a product of distillation and he just cannot keep up with where his series needed to go past that first EPISODIC storyline. Serialization is a really hard thing to work with and most shonen fighting series in general don't do a great job of consistency.
@Arch Even if a Zetus got Obito for Madara it's still all too convenient, Obito being alive is convenient and the fact that he was close to where Madara was, is also convenient.
