Caught up with Bleach, after being on a hiatus since early 2013.

Well the fights were entertaining and was surprised by the number of deaths on both sides, especially major characters (unless Tite Kubo decides to resurrect them in some way) but man... the story is sooooo predictable. 

 

It is a very typical shonen arc--enemy attacks, beats the crap out of the heroes, retreats for some time, heroes train, enemy attacks again, heroes starts fighting back with better chances, tries to hold on until the protagonist arrives. You know, this is really typical Bleach story, and gets used a lot. And I just have to facepalm every single frikkin time with Ichigo since his character has been reused so many times already. He escapes to train somewhere, arrives to the battle all ignorant and non caring like "Hmm, what is going on? Ah an enemy! Whoops, you are strong. Sorry, I am stronger." And then later when the main boss arrives he gets alll serious again. F*cking stupid!

 

This sure is depressing. Naruto and Bleach both have fallen into some pit of stupid. Hopefully One Piece doesn't' follow suit.

I've never been a fan of the magical girl genre nor did this particular show convince me otherwise, but it goes without saying that Madoka Magica is an exceptional show and one that was worth the watch for certain. There are certainly a lot to say about this particular show, but I'm going to focus on its 'deconstruction' element which was an enjoyable feature for me that I appreciated (and most people I would assume as well). 

 

Madoka Magica's utilizing of the concept on the magical girl genre and how it is constituted in reciprocal determination, is to be lauded for sure. It takes up several causes and aspects that I find to be vital for a show like this and properly delves into them and questions basically everything. Additionally in how well the show manages to take apart each underlying element that it puts forward and putting it into a web of a well designed 'risk and reward' system, is commendable. Despite its premise, the show delves away from a dichotomous relationship in its narrative structure (a problem that I find in the magical girl genre) and adds layers and weight to it. I respect any show that does that and executes on its properly, which the show does without a doubt.

 

However, while the deconstruction formula is present, it is a more of a fatalistic take on it and its inner workings aren’t technically anything new since Madoka Magica is after all a magical girl show on itself. While the initial show focuses on deconstruction and giving the show a realistic perspective on its contents, later on in the end it reconstructs the narrative. Not a bad quality by any means, just wanting to point it out.

 

While the characters are quite stereotypical, they are thankfully well rounded and each of the main ones are established into the story nicely. Motives, identity, personality, conflicts and more are explored and this is due to the show putting such emphasis on exposure, especially on the role of a magical girl and everything that surrounds it. This is quite an impressive element for me on how well it is executed, especially considering the show is only 12 episodes long. I was quite surprised in how everyone (and everything for that matter) had a purpose to fill and a role to play in the overarching plot. 

 

The animation was very solid, it was colorful and the visual and artistic design was impressive imo. The musical score is quite something. There is certainly a range of quality musical pieces, with different tones and many distinctive ones. But is Yuki Kajiura, so of course it is awesome. 

 

So in short, it was an enjoyable watch and I am glad that I experienced it. It is certainly a show that I recommend.

 

Rebellion:

Not going to go in much depth into the movie, but I enjoyed it quite a lot. It is very workable sequel to a show which I personally didn't think it needed, but considering how well it both follows up on the ideas portrayed in the series and expands upon them in new and interesting directions, it certainly gets my seal of approval. In addition adding further portrayal on the characters and development for certain individuals. I can understand someone having problems with it, especially regarding certain character's choices / actions, but considering that they all makes sense I have nothing against it.

Ichigo has been one of the worst fictional characters in history for years.

 

Which is sad, because the entire setting/premise is promising, and some side character are very good.

lol thought the exact same thing when I stumbled upon it! But srsly, the explaining part is in EVERY FRIKKIN FIGHT! Really, how hard is it to find a different method than having the characters explaining it out directly.

 

And yeah, if you have followed Bleach like me then I would recommend it just for the fight scenes (they are quite good) but meh, don't bother otherwise.

Agreed. When someone says the term "Special Snowflake" I always think of Ichigo. Srsly, he is the embodiment of that trope!

 

And yes it is quite sad, since at one point I thought of Bleach rather highly. Considered it better than Naruto and One Piece, until it all fell to sh*t.

Early Bleach with early Ichigo was better. When he looked like a punk and had the Sakuragi punk character archetype. Hey it worked for Yusuke and Oga.
