I haven't been keeping up with anime over the last few months, but I had some time this weekend to finally watch Aldnoah Zero.  Hard to talk about without spoiler, so read at your own risk.

 

Impressions:

General impressions, I found the setting and plot fascinating.  I though it was very believable for a mecha anime, mainly in how it portrayed the war.  I also liked the relatively small scope of the main casts involvement.  Speaking of which, I really liked most of the supporting cast.  They had good interaction, and I could believe their characterization.  However, I thought Inaho was dull and overpowered for a protagonist in this world.  Weakest part of the show in my opinion.

 

How about those last 2 episodes?  Killer in my opinion.  They really sold the desperation, and determination required to keep fighting under such horrible odds, clinging to any bit of hope that was left.

 

But more importantly how about that last f'ing scene.  Like holy sh!t.  I was expecting something dramatic just because of who the writer is, but that was a straight up downer ending.  I liked it, but it definitely left me a bit sad, which I applaud them for.  While these types of shows usually illicit strong reactions (usually shock for the other doing something unexpected) rarely do I associate sadness with it.

 

I think this is mainly because I connected most with Seylum.  She was easily my favorite character, and it definitely hurt seeing her fight to keep from tumbling into despair as everything she believed slowly fell apart.  Her getting strangled was also intense and disturbing (as it should have been).  Having experience with trying to resuscitate people in the past, it definitely left an impact on me.  I definitely held my breath, and didn't expect her to make it.

 

I found it to be a very dark take on the genre that really tries hard to break from the mold, but I expected that going in. To quote Kotaku, I found it particularly interesting that "only the villains have Gundams" and that after that dramatic ending, there really is no lead characters left standing.  This makes the sequel pitch even more interesting, so I'll definitely pick it up again next season.

 

Other than that, poor Slaine, life really hates him.

 

 

Conclusion:

 

A compelling plot with a great setting, I found Aldnoah to be a very good, dark take on the mecha genre.  Not a must watch, but definitely recommended if you are interested seeing a new take on the genre that isn't afraid to break the rules.
