Chewin and Sim right now:

:P

I could never  fully understand the existence of such characters in serious shows.

They seem like an after-thought, tacked-on, not really belonging in he setting.

Speaking of which, I heard there's a fight going on here.

So I'll confess to a not-so-guilty pleasure-

Started and watched all the current episodes of Gundam Build Fighters Try, as well as finally pushed myself to reach the last five episodes of the original GBF.

It is unabashedly fun, tongue in cheek, full of cameos and references to past series (Gundam and other mecha), and in many respects self-aware. As far as tournament-style anime it's quite good, having solid animations and generally well-choreographed fight scenes, enjoyable quirky characters, a nice network of character relationships and development, and not at all pretending to be serious or have any doom-and-gloom. Plus, for older viewers, the first outright gundam MILF.

It's like Yugioh, except without children's card games, egyptian spirits, the power of friendship, horrible voice acting, blatant-rule breaking, poor fight scenes, world-threatening consequences, contrived childhood abuse drama, or card games on motor cycles and other death traps.

But it does revolve around a children's toy that people take overly seriously.

Gunpla was the reason Gundam thrived.

When it first aired in 1979, it didn't do so well to the point where it would have gotten canceled. However, Gunpla saved it.

I'm sure the mod is still madish at me challenging the great eggplant though.

Yeah the Gundam Build Fighters series have been really fun.

But two things.

Lalah Sune was the actual first Gundam MILF. According to Char anyway.

And English Brock Kaiba and Japanese Jack Atlas shows you know nothing of the great voice acting Yugioh has.

That is all.

It is largely subjective whether one finds something adorable or not in a medium. I myself found the Tachikomas to be rather annoying and if it weren't for their continious discussions on the concept of individuality I wouldn't have liked them that much.

Speaking of LOGH, I am still having a hard time deciding whether I like Reinhard or Yang Wenli more. I admire Wenli as a character but Reinhard more as a political figure. Truly, I keep jumping back and forth with these two. But this is one reason why the show is so great. Rarely do I find myself rooting for both parties almost on an equal basis. I love it!

Indeed. Those two military geniuses with great ideas, plus so many other sympathy-able great characters.

I know, right?

Its' like choosing between your testicles or your penis.

You're more familiar with one but it won't worth without the other.

#bestanologyever.

Seriously though.

I loved them both, but I leaned more towards Wenli simply because he's the more human out of the two. You can relate more with the guy, and that's exactly what it is. Reinhard is a larger-than-life figure, and he plays the part well. Wenli on the other hand is seen as this larger-than-life dude but is exactly the opposite of that.

You could never stand side by side with Reinhard. There would always be a master/subordinate relationship with him. Only Siegfreid and his sister could ever manage that. But Yang is the kind of guy you could go drinking with and talk to like if he were your equal.

@Sim

That is indeed a peculiar way to put it, lol.

But yes, that is the essence of Wenli which I love, and exploring it from different viewpoints in the story (Reinhard and the Empire, people directly and indirectly around Wenli and the Alliance, Phezzan included) is a joy to watch.

Though personally I think I lean more towards Reinhard, since he is in a lot of ways taken directly from Thomas Hobbes’ Leviathan (a work that I admire). As we can witness in the show, Reinhard's experience with the Empire and the nobility thought him that a sole monopolizer of power-- whether a person or political body--is necessary to impose order and peace. To that end, Reinhard systematically amassed political power and ruthlessly eliminated his opposition, also learning of the importance of image in the projection of power.

Experiencing how he goes through with everything and beyond that (so far at least) is an aspect I enjoy watching more than p*rn, if I may be so blunt.

I geass people, started my own military, started my own country, took over the throne, declared war on the world and destroyed over half of it in the process.

Then I was stabbed right in front of everyone, on camera! Now my ghost haunts this thread.

Ohhhhhhhhh...... Boo!

Yay! A work I'm familiar with!

I get your admiration, because I share it too. I love the guy for all he did. But I think Yang put it best. A despotic government is only as good as its head. It happens all the time, i,e, Accursed Kings. I know you're not familiar with it (but you might be with the history) but it's the same case.

Philip the Fair creates a powerful France with vassals ranging from dukes to even kings. He establishes the middle-class and gives them seats in his council. All his reforms go to benefit France.

Then he dies.

And so begins the sh*tstorm that led to the 100 year war.

Hell, even Yang admired and agreed with the actions taken by Reinhard. He saw him as an excellent ruler (which he was) but ultimately could not agree on his side because of his position as "Leviathan" and the consequences that come with a despotic government.

However, I'd say that there was no way Reinhard could reform the Empire as quickly as he did if it were not for that very system. And there was no way that a reform of government to the point where it shifted from despotics to democracy was ever going to work. Social policy is one thing, but adopting a system which has been the eternal face of your greatest enemy is political suicide. Even if Reinhard was in favour of democratic solutions, he could have never done so without risking the integrity of his campaign.

Damn LOTGH is an awesome show.

Impressive feats for sure, but the importance lies in how it acted upon and what factors are used to reach that state. In what manner does he directly and / or indirectly affect these outcomes? Does he at all? How does it develop? What aspects are in his usage and how does he act on them? Are there allies on his side? Does he utilize them as well? If so, to what extent? How pro-active is he about the conflict, are there any ideological factors or ulterior motives that drive him? Etc.

So I am interested in knowing what distinguishes him as a character and more importantly as a leader. Appreciate if you refrain from any major spoilers.

Think of Geass as LOTGH light.

It's no where near as good, but it's still impressive on its own.

R2 suffers quite a bit. R1 is excellent though.

I'd say you'd like it but you won't f*cking love it since it has its issues.

And it's VERY extreme. None of the grey from LOTGH.

Well... let's put it this way. It is grey and I think Lelouch is a brilliant anti-hero, but it never does conflict as well as LOTGH did. There's no moral balance between factions. Britannia (the Empire Lelouch fights against) is the Empire before Reinhard's policies but 1000x worse.

Lotion and a few other people disagree. But I fracking love its ending.

It's worth a shot. 50 episodes in total (since like Clannad, you can't really watch R1 on its own and not continue with R2.)

Code Geass is a great show. I enjoyed it very highly and it didn't feel like a chore to watch. In fact I was interested very highly and was into it.

Hell, I have a hand drawn picture of Lelouch on my binder. I drew it of course.

how it acted upon and what factors are used to reach that state.

Intrigue, strategy and clever used of his 'geass' power which allows him to command anyone to do anything he wants to. But only ONCE since it can't be used on the same person twice.

In what manner does he directly and / or indirectly affect these outcomes?

He's a proactive character from the start. He basically pulls the strings from the get go.

How does it develop?

Pretty damn well. I can't go more into detail without spoilers though. But it's a gradual thing.

What aspects are in his usage and how does he act on them?

Usage of what? Assets? Lelouch is pretty much an anti-hero. He manipulates people with Justice and so on to act on his rebellion.

Are there allies on his side? Does he utilize them as well?

Yes and yes. Some of his allies are actually competent... to an extent.

are there any ideological factors or ulterior motives that drive him? Etc.

Code Geass is basically about ideology. And yes, Lelouch is ulterior motive extraordinaire. Namely revenge really.

Oh and be prepared for ludicrous accomplishments that wouldn't be possible for anybody other than a dude with a super high intelligence. In DnD terms, 2018. That's 2000 over the mark. Like predicting what people would say from conversations.

Like I said. It's not a master-piece but it's definitely worth watching.
