It's the name of the title character. A little more distinctive than "tonari no" which is just normal Japanese words meaning something like "next to."

Fair enough. One of these days I'm going to set aside some time to sit down and start learning some Japanese words/phrases and maybe, eventually, fluent Japanese (I doubt though, I'd probably butcher the hell out of it  ).

Haven't watched much anime but last night a group of about 8 of us watched 6 episodes of this anime called "The devil is a part timer" via a TV screen used as a computer monitor. Idk exactly what genre it is considered but it was pretty funny and i liked it more then when they tried to get me to watch the big famous animes.

What's wrong with the manga?

 

It has a post-timeskip arc that more or less undercuts all the guiltless themes of the familial love story of single father and his adopted daughter and their small circle of normality of parenthood and children, and replaces it with something else that seems to take joy in undercutting all the pleasant expectations of future development and subverting them in various, unneeded ways.

Personally, I enjoyed it. Once you get that it's as much super robot as real robot, I think it's a solid story all around. Hardly my Top 10 of All Time, but you got real character development, a number of significant plot twists that challenged what everyone thought they knew rather than throw the show into entirely new directions, good amounts of humor and quirkiness with the creative mech designs (and amusing national charicatures) between legit drama, and it capped off with one of the better love confessions you'll ever find in anime.

 

It's a bit dated, true- animation style for a number of the martial arts sequences (such as the flurry of fists), the period's typical views of casting women in generally weaker and subordinate roles, and of course there's a cast of characters broad enough that you'll doubtless find someone you don't like- but overall most people would still be able to enjoy it despite the flaws.

Devil is a part-timer sure surprised me, since it was actually pretty good. Went in expecting nothing much after reading the synopsis. Leave it to anime to make something sound dumb (IMHO) and make it awesome.

 

Anyway caught up with Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works.

Well pretty damn great so far! The visuals have been stunning (I've found them better than Fate/Zero which I didn't think was possible) and the story has been rather engaging thus far. 

 

However, these last episode was kinda disappointing. Sure, visually it was superb but just like in the 2006 version, both Shirou and Rin are acting like an idiots, with Shirou doing a stupid thing one after the another and Rin's behavior is inconsistent. What annoys me more is how they at first are friends, the fight each other, than friends again. I sure hope not this develops into a romance and I think the show should focus on Saber / Shirou instead which has better potential. Though so far Saber has been side lined quite heavily and I hope this changes.

 

Otherwise it has been cool, but no where near Fate/Zero's level.

I don't find that to be the case at all. Shiro doesn't act without thinking mostly, and in a situation with Rin he acts just as he should, defending himself. Seriously, what else could he do? Either cover in fear or suddenly turn up his power level and beat the sh*t out of Rin (both would be stupid). He chased Rider to get a view on the Master and when he saw that the Servant wasn't that much of a threat he was reluctant in calling Saber (which he would have hadn't Rin come to his rescue). Rin is struggling as a human being, and is conflicted what she would do, since killing someone is not what she really wants. 

 

Yes I do agree that Saber should get more screen time, Archer as well, but Saber has been prominent in two seasons already, no need for her to take the stage again. And it is too early to judge UBW was not being near Zero's level.

This particular episode was low-key in its representation (much like its predecessors actually) but more so on the narrative, with a stronger but subtle focus on the central themes that revolves around Shirou and Rin respectively regarding them as characters and their relationships. 

 

Yes, Shirou has a problem with judging the level of intensity in dangerous situations and pretty much dives in without inhibitions during several instances, but everything that he does corresponds accurately to his character. Shirou is illiterate not only to the codes of the Grail War, but also anything regarding what it means to be a magus, which in turn makes him disconnected from the events he has found himself in. He is uncertain how exactly he should act, so currently what he does is simply doing something and even then it is not without cause (e.g. chasing after Rider to find the identity of the Master). When Rin lectures him about his freeform and unorthodox philosophies when it comes to magic, that is due to what Kiritsugu taught Shirou as a child.

 

To put it simply; Shirou doesn't keep secrets and doesn't understand why he should. He doesn't want to hurt anybody, so why would anybody want to hurt him? He has a rather naive outlook on the world, which is in large part through his ideological view on the topic of "hero of justice" which he inherited from Kiritsugu. I found this to be his greatest weakness with Shirou but also his strength--since he knows exactly who he is as an individual.

 

This is why I find that Rin is equally frustrated and fascinated by Shirou--he is a reflection of her own feelings and beliefs unimpeded by her personal obligations and inherited identity as a magus and a Tohsaka.  It is a constant struggle between maintaining her status as a rigid magus who has an obligation to with the War, and simply as a human being. This is also taken into account when she exclaims to Shirou that Kiritsugu put his role as a father before his role as a magus--due to him not being a conventional mage because he didn’t abide by the social customs and standards that noble and prestigious mage families uphold--which is exactly the opposite to what Rin's own father did (which I personally think is something that Rin is partially jealous of to a certain extent but stands fast to justify her own life). In this way, Rin's conflict with Shirou is a conflict with herself. Her actions and behavior are not inconsistent at all.

 

This is also one major reason why I find the chemistry between Rin and Shirou to be great--they're both similar people who happen to have rather opposite personalities and family relationship, and how it all correlates with each other is fascinating to watch and I can't wait to see how it develops, be it either romantically or not. Personally I would love to see these two characters break away from the destructive inherited cycles of values, obligations, and pain that were elucidated in Fate/Zero and reach different heights in what the War entails, on itself as an event and the characters part of it.

 

It is way to early to judge UBW reaching similar heights as Fate/Zero. However, what I have personally found that UBW does better is having a larger visually distinctive usage of magic, both technically and tactically in terms of non-Servants. Shirou's strengthening ability, Rin's wide variety of spells, Illya as well have been a joy to watch. Giving some exposition regarding the magical workings would be appreciated however.
