Err can't say I remember that part... there were a lot of car shenanigans though that I remember such as Akio flipping over the front, and all the various other... randomness. Akio was such a bizzare character, I feel like until he showed up the anime was almost in second gear or something.
There were so many one-off things it's hard to keep track I feel like I had settled into having the shadow puppets just be about recaps and then wham, out of left field it's this super macabre thing. I think it's one of the later episodes... it was like having this dark friend in a dark time and so it's all kind of blurry.
However, I distinctly recall things like the Blackrose situation which you mentioned as well as the part right before the ending ending with the coffin and all that, very surreal imagery, kind of intense emotionally also.
All in all, it definitely leaves an impression.
The part I mentioned was in the movie which you might now have seen. It was even more bizzare then the TV series was if you can believe it.
The surreal imagery is a huge draw for me. One of the reasons I rate the series so highly is how drenched in symbolism and surrealism it is. Even the music that played during the duels was heavily symbolic if you took the time to read through the lyrics.
I was particularly drawn to how much it played on the classical fairy tale of the prince rescuing the princess, and I very much like how it deconstructed the entire concept from top to bottom. Utena in particular made a great main character as she was able to play both the prince and the princess at once, and the story really did well at messing with your perception of those roles.
I could easily write a few mini novels about the symbolism with the duels, the floating castle and the imagery but I'm just on a short break at work so I'll sum up my thoughts on it all with this: hnnnnnnnnnnng
What did you think of Nanami BTW? At first I hated her, but by the end she ended up being one of the more interesting characters in the show. I like that they were able to take this dispacle joke character and turn her into a real character that I could in many ways relate too.
And I'm just repeating myself here but the 2 partner episode on Wakaba during the blackrose arc was a beast in of itself. Like the entire BR was amazing, but those 2 episodes helped cement this series as one of my personal favorites.
One day.. One day I'll figure out what Mikis stopwatch was for.. Lol
OK. well, back to work :'(
