Geeze that animation looks so good for such an old anime *_*I'd say the anime. My recollection and understanding of both is not perfect but I do know the anime, while rough around the edges (it came out the same time as Evangelion) captures a lot of the warmth of the series pretty good. It's the opposite of Tsubasa where you can tell they altered the original style a lot for the anime adaptation. You get some pretty flashy cool moments. And the OST was very fun IMO.
Additionally, while it's got a few changes from the manga it's mostly faithful which is pretty much always a good thing as far as I'm concerned.
Some of the fights and also the dubbing (which I watched) have a kind of goofy vibe to them, but again that is mostly from the age I'd say. The core elements though are just so resonant though I just don't care for the most part. Plus there's a subtitled option. Ferio was the one I remember being pretty screwy but I think the girls were ok.
Season 2 though I've read is much more of a divergence from the manga though and stuff like that so that's all kinds of meh.
Hm, on closer inspection that gif might of been season 2 which was made like one year earlier. I think the one you had though is season 1 which is still in a similar vein. The final fights etc were quite flashy if I remember.
As far as Tsubasa goes I watched the OVAs first which makes no sense at all because the plot is twisty in the extreme. Honestly, most people who understood the plot beforehand apparently still can't comprehend it. All I know is those OVAs were fairly mesmerizing. I wouldn't call it symbolic or surreal necessarily in the same way as Utena but it's certainly strange and incomprehensible in good ways. The anime itself seemed kind of dry by comparison.
Anyway it's interesting I just came across Princess Tutu just now because I was like just how many magical girls are there anyway. I've never even really watched Sailor Moon beyond the random episode here and there. Someone could probably make a pretty good list some day.... or already has... and all that.

Now that you mention it I seem to recall hearing that about Tsubasa being impossible to understand too. In that case maybe I'll go with the manga for that and watch the OVAs afterwords if and when I finally do get around to that series. The majority of the reason I'm interested in it is mainly because of it's connection to CCS, at least in regards to the characters except in a more fantasy based setting. Lee x Sakura was one of my favorite fictional couples when I was younger, the two are so kawaii together ![]()
Princess Tutu is another one that like Utena is quite different from your typical magical girl anime. It's very metaphysical and it's one of those ones I think you could watch at any age and still be able to appreciate it and take something away from it from what I've seen (watched the first 3 episodes before my anime watching habits fell apart) and heard. I know Ani really liked it and I completely trust her opinion on shows since a lot of the same things seem to resonate with both of us so I heavily suspect I'll end up loving it too. It also helps that it has such a heavy ballet theme, which I admit I really like.
I only watched the odd episode of Sailor Moon as a kid, I was pretty against it at the time because I was like 10 and pretty much your typical "this is a girls show" sort of boy, although I really didn't think it was that bad even then, I just never followed it closely. I did help my sister collect the final arc in the series on VHS when I got a bit older since me and her typically went in together on a lot of animes and she somehow managed to talk me into helping her with that. The funny part being despite my initial attitude as a kid, I've actually ended up seeing a whole ton of animes in the genre and enjoyed most of them, with one managing to destroy everything in it's path becoming what I can probably call my favorite series of all time at this point XD

AAAAAAANNIIIEEEEMMMEEEYYYYY!

Yes, spread more.
It's not even ice goddamn it!
Which only makes a bad joke even worse, which is a double negative and cancels each other out to make it even better!
... somehow.

Shes either really chilly or needs to pee real bad.

I think we need to chill out.
Sim, if you continue with these jokes, then I am going to give you the cold shoulder.
