Think I might soon since anime series are gonna be kinda impossible with DA.

 

No way will they be as good as the manga.

 

But at least I know for a fact that the sex scenes are animated!

The animation style has this 3D kind of look to it that makes the combat pretty cool to watch, but it just looks so... iono unappealing most of the time outside of combat. It does have it's moments but I prefer the manga. Storyline wise it's just as good as the manga I think, been a while since I watched them (don't think I ever saw the 3rd one either) so I can't remember if they changed it from the source material off the top of my head, but it definitely follows the manga more closely then the original anime did.

It's the anime I recommend the most after PMMM. I'd probably place it as my 2nd favorite anime overall.

B-but I liked Griffiths helm

 

Claymore can definitely get very dark. Both it and Berserk are very similar in how they handle the demons/yoma or w/e concept since both essentially come from humans who have pretty much gone too far and have become twisted creatures of darkness, with a touch of their human sides still added in. I like it because all the demons/yoma are unique, and quite often you can see their human aspects just very much twisted (much like a certain other anime which I love to death which will remain unnamed for spoiler reasons, but I'm sure you can probably figure out which I mean )

 

The thing with Berserk though is many of the panels are just so extensive that I could just stare at them gawking for a while

The other thing, and I'll understand if you don't quite believe or agree with me here but I feel Berserk can be quite (I hate to use this word, but I do honestly feel this way) profound at times. It's one of those series that can have moments of genuine beauty, and filled with emotions without the need to actually even say anything or have some giant twist. It has those little moments in which you can see the good in humanity despite the dark nature of the story, and those moments are infact only enhanced by the darker aspects of the story Imo.

 

The other thing Berserk does which personally resonates with me is playing on the raw sense of wonder and fantasy, which are themes that I am highly drawn to. It shows both the darker and horrifying aspects of it as well as the good parts.

 

Mmm sorry, talking about Berserk gets me rambling quite a bit as Sim knows.

 

I had a bunch of stuff about Berserk but then I passed out, but now I'm alive again so I'll just put it under the spoiler tab for anyone interested.

 

I was also just burning up Warlords of Draenor, Talador has been a pretty cool zone, lots of strange mushroom forests and stuff.

Hmm that's not really that surprising, I know other people that feel that Berserk is special for a variety of reasons. My familiarity with that whole series is definitely not as deep as many, but based on what I know my biggest reason for disliking is when Griffith just goes full Hitler at the end, up until their falling out I was all in for the most part.

I thought about the dark aspects of Berserk though and it was curious to me because I realized that the demons present a great deal of tension but I think the greater sense of tension is between Griffith and Guts. Griffith is really, in the end, the true demon. Demons only function as enablers, in the Berserk universe, with the Zodd incident functioning as a kind of accidental intervention, mere foreshadowing, despite it's destructiveness.

They are sort of similar to Yuko Ichihara in xxxHolic, limitless power limited by the requirement of human consent. As horrible as the Berserk universe it is, there's this insane instability to the Guts-Griffith relationship where it just feels like they both rely on each other's strengths and respective powers so heavily that feels even more horrible to me.

It's almost like a captor/slave relationship in some ways, but where the captor is reliant just as much on the slave to fuel his ego than for any practical purpose; and the slave is driven as much simply to outshine the master than to provide any practical basis of support, to the point where it's not even entirely clear who is captor or slave. Guts is pure strength and devotion, Griffith is like the embodiment of egotism.

The demons are mostly the creeping sensation that should that relationship ever boil or burst the results would be truly catastrophic by raising the stakes, but the fundamental trauma is an incredibly human one. Casca operates as a kind of passive observer/foil/backdrop for the guys to have out their sort of confusions and frustrations.

This is basically a long way of saying I've thought about dark in many different contexts, like, is Frozen darker than Berserk? Is that kind of brittle breaking relationship the seed of destruction more than any fantastical demon?

Although I certainly enjoy having those kinds of flourishes accelerate the atmosphere, and elevate the mythos, which is definitely up there as far as anime goes. There are only a handful that probably do it better, such as the Bebop movie, Haibane Renmei, Madoka, FMA, Utena, a few Miyazaki movies... some others. That image looks straight out of a tryptych or something from 15th century France for example.

Oh, and Isi. BioWare weren't kidding about 'bigger maps.' I'm in the Hinterlands, it's been 5 hours and I still haven't explored everything. Jesus.

 

I just hit the 24 hour mark, I think I spent about 8 or 9 hours in the Hinterlands (I completed everything that I could find there) and probably 3 or 4 hours total in the hub areas talking with my companions and messing with the War Table.  

 

Inquisition is incredible and the environments are vastly different.

And now that I've gotten used to the combat it's a whole lot better.

I still hate the limited Health Potions with a passion, it wasn't a problem until I fought my first Dragon and my followers kept being stupid. Those 8 potions went bye bye really quickly. I got really close, but I couldn't quite beat the Dragon who was a level higher than my party, I've decided that I'm going to come back in a couple of levels and make it my ******, prison rules.

Griffith is actually a pretty interesting topic if you'll indulge me just a bit here because I think there is a lot more to him then you initially realize. Since you probably won't be going through the manga anytime soon I think I'm going to spoil some things so hopefully you don't mind, either way I'll stick it in a spoiler tab. Warning this might get a bit lengthy but I'll try not to make it too bad.

Within the world of Berserk there exists God. The God in this world is a real entity but it has limits in how it can interact with the world. Through the use of Behelits and through suffering it is able to control fate, which is why the Behelits are considered to be the most powerful pieces of magic within the stories world despite being almost seemingly useless on their own. The demons essentially act as angels technically as well, since they carry out Gods will, and the God Hands are basically the ultimate tools of God. Griffith too is no more then a tool, albeit a tool just as complex as any human if not moreso but a tool nonetheless. Griffiths will, goals and dreams are all things that were crafted as God, and everything he has experienced in his life was meant to lead him to where he is now. Which begs the question of why? 

 

As the series goes on Griffith begins to introduce more and more magic into the world after the eclipse. The effect this has on the world is HUGE which is why I previously implied that he was more then just a mindless killer. The main thing to keep in mind is all his actions are and always will be contrasted to that one moment with the Eclipse, which showed his true nature and what he is capable of. What makes this interesting is that to the rest of the world, Griffith is like this Godsent savior that is capable of doing the impossible. Right now in the story he basically has his own kingdom in a world filled with fantasy where his people worship him, and he has even managed to tear down the barrier between life and death. There is a scene in which was see him summoning the souls of the dead so that their loved ones can talk with them, and we are told that the people themselves no longer fear death because of him. Only a handful of people truly understand what Griffith is, and Gatts is one of them. The terrifying things about the demons is they are all given the choice to do what they did, they chose to become the demons in the end.

 

Now regarding the Gatts and Griffith relationship, I don't think your entirely wrong about the captor analogy in regards to them. Griffith believed Gatts was his, and the moment he could no longer control Gatts, he snapped which played a large role in bringing him to that moment of the eclipse. I'd also say your mostly right about Caska acting as the foil. What I like about them is they both represent different sides of the same coin. Griffith is a natural leader and is viewed as the typical white knight by the rest of the world, and yet is capable of the most despicable acts imaginable and is willing to sacrifice anyone and anything to get what he wants, and on the other hand Gatts repels others, is headstrong and represents the typical black knight despite having a genuine sense of morality and is even able to bring out the inner strength of those who follow him (you'd have to have seen post eclipse to really get this part though)

 

One note I'll make is well the series still remains dark after the eclipse, it sort of reels itself in just a bit. We start to see a lot more of the traditional fantastical setting and more of the awe inspiring and beautiful aspects of fantasy and magic then you do pre-eclipse which is basically just a depressing grim-dark fantasy world in which no sane person would ever want to visit. The world as it exists in the manga currently is vastly different. There is still always a darker tone underlying it all, but it does feel a bit more balanced imo as apposed to the grimdark setting you've seen.

 

And yeah... It won't surprise you to know that the Old Gods is by far mine and Anis favorite parts of WoW. We make a habit to run Ulduar weekly because 1. It's just so freaking amazing, and 2. Yogg-Saron (I am a lucid dream) and we have spent many hours discussing the lore around these entity's within the world, but I'll spare you my rambles on that since it mostly consists of me smashing my face on my keyboard well repeatedly making gushing noises lol. What makes them so terrifying is largely because of how they are unknowable (on a side note I felt the Reapers in ME were much better when they were more along these lines) and to understand them was to go insane. I think as far as horror goes the whole Love Craftian horror is one of the best there is for setting a tone and atmosphere.

 

On a last quick note I actually like what you said about how the concept of dark can largely come down to context. Sure a demon is more dark in a traditional sense, but sometimes there's more to a situation and what is happening that can be much more subtlety terrifying. 

 

Also, mmmmm... tryptych XD me likie the style unsurprisingly enough.

 

This post could easily turn out 2-3 longer if I spent longer with it but I'm quite tired atm, and I'm sure you probably don't particularly want me to drop that much text on you at once. Hopefully this made some degree of sense in regards to some of the things you were mentioning at least.

Blah one last quick note before bed. I started watching that but I didn't like the concept much. Like how God just decided to leave everyone on earth as they were because Heaven was full.. Did he just not plan for overcrowding in heaven? Are concepts like exponential growth and math just not something God is good with? You'd think he would have planned that out just a bit better.

 

I'll admit I didn't watch enough to really make any firm judgements on the show beyond that though.

Indeed, it's also my 2nd placed show and it's very common for me to still think about a few things from it every now and then. There's just so muhc to think about and heck that's not even counting the last little twist with the Q-rats.

 

 

 

And yes I can echo that the Hinterlands is fairly big and full of things. Like bears and more bears and probably a few additional bears.
