As for "being more tolerant," I honestly don't even know how to respond to that. I can't force myself to like something. It doesn't really work that way.
I'm sure everyone here has watched something where the art-style was a huge turn-off. It's part of the reason I really don't like watching Casshern Sins.

I also didn't like the art in Borderlands. I never said it wasn't good. It just doesn't suit my tastes.

That's exactly what I did when I went to the Louvre.
The line to see the Mona Lisa was insanely long. So I was that "f*** that s***, who cares? Let's just get outta here!" and went to Jardin des Tuileries instead to watch some ducks at the fountain.

So... what are your alls's opinions of Soul Eater? I was surfing the youtube again when I came across an AMV (yeah...) of Soul Eater, and I couldn't help but wonder, why is this so deranged and creepy.
As for why it's creepy? It just has a lot of "monster" themed stuff. And the anime team is awesome.
@Logan So you don't even know why you dislike stuff? That's very odd to me, I always have a reason for disliking something.

Sounds nice.
@Logan - yeah, sure, I wasn't trying to say you need to change your preferences or anything. It's just that often enough people will "know" they don't like some very general thing (like a loosely-defined art-style) and that's that, they're biased for life. Just a thing one should maybe be mindful of. (just saying you should maybe not avoid it as much, and try to accept it in worthwhile series)
Actually, I've not found any art-work that were a turn-off, iff the dislike cannot be easily be explained (Some Geth might be on to something).
Didn't like Borderlands myself btw. (it's "stylized" in a way that's almost cliche'd - if not in games then otherwise)
And wasn't so astonished by the mona lisa myself. Compared to other great art it's overhyped (in very personal opinion). Yet it does have value, and I'd certainly be able to watch it for some time, without feeling dislike (more the opposite).

Can anyone recommend any anime films/series, any recent ones that stand out? I'm mostly in the mood for some action, nothing too sad like Elfen Lied (so depressing).

It may just be me but Soul Eater has a lot of good quality AMVs for some reason.
It's good though and it isn't as creepy as it's made to look.

Stuff like this is why I'm an anime/manga fan. Sure, if you tried really, really hard, you might be able to find a sequence of events as good as the last minutes of the episode, but it certainly wouldn't be pulled off as cool.
I don't like to use the word 'epic" much, but the ending of this episode is one of the few cases where I think epic is actually the appropriate term.
The background music, the animation, just about everything about the the last few minutes gave me goosebumps.
Only little tidbits that could have been changed was Chrollo crying, in the manga, there are tears coming from both his eyes, while they decided to go with the sexy cry here, and Neon originally commenting on how she never saw a guy cry before. I thought that was kinda important. Also Nostrad not getting punched in the face, but who cares about that. Also, the scene with the army assassin picking up Chrollo'd deliberate trail of blood was kind of better in the manga, originally there is a close-up of the assassins nose, breathing in the scent of the blood and reaching out for something in the dark, throwing a test knife at the poor sap in the chair, just seemed more detailed and creepy for the army guy. Still, fantastic episode
Look what I found while watching the episode again.

I just don't care for how poorly balanced the sense of realism is.
It will carefully depict things like Okubo Toshimichi and his assassination, then turn around and have wacky X-Men inspired fodder villains the size of houses who spit fire.
I don't think those things really detract from it. I think it handles them very carefully. I mean, not four or five episodes prior you had Sanosuke (Zanza) wielding a zanbato. Which while that's a real weapon, the way it was portrayed was obviously not accurate. The zanbato in the anime is waaay bigger then the ones in our world are.
And yet, it handled that carefully by saying no one prior to Sanosuke could wield it due to its weight and size and by giving it a very limited method-of-use in battle.
Then with Hyottoko, he breathes fire by means of the flint teeth he replaced his real ones with and a bag of oil in his stomach. Yes it's unrealistic, but the show hadn't been a pinnacle of realism prior to that moment.
And I find that it handled it very well to sort of balance how unrealistic it was by having Kenshin spin his sword to create a fan -- since he's in the anime a master of the Hitsen Mitsurugi style and a lightning fast swordsman, it works -- and having Sanosuke protect himself from the fire with his arms and taking the bag of oil out of the equation.
Those may not be realistic either -- I honestly don't know -- but in terms of the characters of Kenshin and Sanosuke it's realistic for them because the former is a master swordsman and sort of for the latter because he is a man who's honed his body to withstand a crapton of things.
I think its story is what matters more, as it focuses on politics, characters, and other themes more then realism. That's what endears it to me. I don't mind the unrealistic elements, because they're either balanced out with realistic ways to defeat the situation or are just awesome that I don't mind.

So what is everyone's Nen type? It's not a great test, but I think it was fun
I'm a Conjurer.
No idea what that means as I haven't watched Hunter X Hunter, nor do I have the time to watch it now.
Is Conjurer awesome? I did love conjuration spells in Skyrim. Is the Conjurer in Hunter X Hunter like that?
Kite's Nen ability is called "Crazy Slots" and allows him to conjure some weapons with a clown affixed to it. A roulette appears on the clown's tongue with numbers 1 to 9, each corresponding to a specific weapon. Whatever number randomly appears, the weapon that corresponds with that number appears. This means that Kite cannot choose what weapon he wants to use; he did this in order to increase the power of the individual weapons by making a Contract prohibiting selection by choice. The weapon drawn will not disappear until used. The clown on Crazy Slots can also talk and comment on Kite's actions and mood, to his chagrin. Only three of his weapons are shown in the manga: a scythe, a rifle, and a mace.
That is a high-level Conjurer power, it's even good for fighting. But it was made thanks to Kite's personalty and a Contract.
But you can never make something like a sword that can cut anything. You can conjure a sowrd simply with a durable sharp blade... But you might as well buy yourself an actual, high-quality sword, no training involved. Though you can't make it appear and disappear at will.
Knov is a conjurer with a teleportation ability called "Hide and Seek". By touching a flat surface, like a wall or the ground, Knov can set and open a portal leading to an artificial Nen dimension—a four level mansion containing twenty-one rooms of various sizes. Each portal is linked to a specific room, with the maximum number of entrances being dependent on the size of the room , with each room being completely separate from the other rooms. Normally each entrance can only lead back to the portal Knov created for it, however, Knov can use a master key to connect any room exit to any previously set portal. When not in active use by Knov, the portals are closed and impossible to detect.
So with something like that you could be a good infiltrator.
Damn I love the Knov power! I never was much of a direct fighter, not in real-life and not in games either. I rather use my wits and stealth. I love games like Assassin's Creed and Thief. I play as an assassin/thief in Skyrim and now in the new game Dishonored I also played as a stealthy thief first. I can definitely find myself in Knov's powers. His powers would really suit me and I think I could make great use of them if I had those powers.
Edit: Knov's "scream" ability is also pretty damn cool.

The Mona Lisa is overrated. I've seen in in real-life and I was not impressed. Leonardo DaVinci has made so many other great paintings which are so much more impressive than his Mona Lisa.
Really, when I saw the Mona Lisa, I was first amazed by how small it really is. Then I stared at it for a couple of minutes, only to decide that I was not impressed. I shrugged and said "meh, whatever" and moved on.
So my response to this:
Some Geth wrote...
I think people who care about art will care about the Mona Lisa.
Nope. I care about art. I'm an art student in fact. But as you can see, I don't give a f*ck about the Mona Lisa. It's a boring painting in my opinion and incredibly overrated.
That said, I do like anime and manga from the 80's and 90's. In fact, I prefer it to modern manga and anime. I really hate the modern overly-stylized anime style.
This style > this style. The latter makes me puke.
Trigun was my first manga by the way.
Anyway, mangas are nice and all, but they'll never compete with the beauty of this or this.
