Oh, cooking is no problem. Someone has to do it in this house (living with my brother, and sadly he does sh*t!). But it is one thing to roast some chicken and make some rice, and having someone like Shirou who makes a frikkin buffet in the morning!
Possibly due to his impulsive and immature nature along with his pettiness and vindictiveness, which doesn't personally appeal to a certain audience. Sadly people doesn't see that that is all on the surface, and that there is a lot more depth to him than that.
Same with Shirou. I can see that his very naive attitude and idealistic pursuit of "saving the world" is not something that would appeal to individuals. Personally I find his moral maturation within the given setting and how it mirrors that of Kiritsugu's to be an interesting take in a story.
His cooking alone would make me want a spot in his harem.
Not to mention when one actually want to cook it can be quite fun too! Still crap at cooking but at least I want to do it every now and then

She told me it wouldn't work and went to chat with her friend whilst me and my buddy were passionately arguing how much nutmeg to use. By the end of the day, Miss Ain't-Gonna-Work was literally begging me for the new recipe (I was not above making her grovel after she had dismissed my grand vision just earlier, ... maybe one of the reasons why I'm always getting friendzoned)!

I have yet to watch FMAB but this is just a case of people having different opinions.
Hell, Shirou is one of my favorite protagonists but a lot of people hate him.
Same, he is easily in my Top 5 list. He is a great character for sure, with a surprising much depth into him and I am pleased there is finally an anime to further showcase it to the public for those who haven't experienced the UBW path (and the Heaven's Feel movies that will come out later).

See, in FMAB impulsive fits the bill, perhaps immature (to a point) as well. But pettiness and vindictiveness? Hardly. ESPECIALLY the latter where he talks down somebody from their own vindiction... TWICE.
If there's anything vindictive about Edward it's his disposition towards his father, who, is a completely different person in FMAB (I've heard he's quite the womaniser in FMA.)
But, believe it or not. Most complaints I've heard against Edward Elric are nothing like what you've said.

I think I'm going to get off too. I'm going to try to introduce my friend to anime. I think I'll show her Kill la Kill first. That'll either scare her off completely, or it will get her really interested.
I think the best gateway anime is Death Note or Code Geass.
Not because they are Gods amongst men in the anime world, but because it trumps every preconception one might have about anime.
Also, they have brilliant dubs, so you can ease them further. It's sometimes hard for a newcomer to watch subs.

Yes, you need to watch Brotherhood. FMA and Brotherhood are pretty similar early on, but FMA cuts away straight after the Hughes thing (I think from what I've heard) which is like 10 episodes in.
I think you'll love Brotherhood a whole deal more.
