Anyway, got to 27 of FMAB which is like, one of my favourite episodes ever, and that's awesome because it's a freaking recap episode. What's so great about it? Pretty much everything from foreshadowing, to characterisation and a strong overview of overlying themes throughout the series.

 

And of course.

My very simple recollection was that like eps 1-25 or so FMA was more fun, 26-60 (or w/e FMAB ended on) FMAB was more fun. Specifically I missed Olivier, the other Homunculi, and the ending of FMA:B, but the kind of pacing, direction, music, and certain thematic moments established in FMA. So... something like that.

 

Basically (I guess your not there yet) but Briggs (which was a nify creation) and everything after it's a bummer they didn't get to all that in the original.

 

There was a scene in FMA though I kept waiting for in B that never got, it was where the two brothers decided they were going to fight to get better and the music starts playing and it was all very swell.

 

What I f*cking love about FMAB though (and this is something I haven't seen much of in anime and it's one of my favourite devices ever) is the gradual build up to the last arc. All that foreshadowing, all those hints at what's to come. They're not obvious at first, but I've watched it five times and they're pretty damn obvious now. I don't know if Hiromu Arakawa planned it all from the start, but even if she didn't, she had this Tolkien-esque sense of story telling where it's all purely organic from the first name to the last chapter.

 

Seriously, not even the fights before the final arc can be considered "fights" in the shounen-manga sense. They're really just brawls that happen in between. That's why it's probably so popular. The line only goes up in the graph. There MIGHT be down-slopes for some, but in the end, what really counts, the finale, is executed perfectly.

The Animated Series is still available on CrunchyRoll. It's not bad, though I'd only gotten through the first 3 episodes. As far as the game itself, it's available on PSN, plus Golden on the Vita.
