@bmwcrazy You can't relate with Shinji? Really? I mean he is every loser otaku's hero!:innocent:

Nope.

If you're talking about otaku's hero, then Takako Kimura from Kannagi is one of the few anime characters that I can truely relate to. :wizard:

Ever hack can just dump a ton of symbolism and mindf*** and then let the fanbase make a dozen interpreations. And then both the creator and the fans feel like geniuses.

No.
An example: Prometheus.
It's bad because there's nothing coherent there.
Sure thing that thought-provoking qualities means good qualities - but it's only thought-provoking til the point it is uncoherent. Thus thought-provoking stuff is difficult to show, moreso with artistic viability.

It's not important that there are a dozen interpretations. It's important what those interpretations are and what they pertain to. Also, their logic and the logic they'll create would need be good logic. As in effective. Uncontradicting. "Mind-expanding" if you may. :P

What is a good story that hasn't to do with original and provoking meaning?

There're stories where one feels enjoyment via thinking. Then there's those that have aesthetics. And there's those that don't have any meaning. You seem to enjoy minimal, unoriginal, traditionalist and not-far-fetched meaning.
I enjoy bold meaning and aesthetic to my cultural interests. No restrictions. A fresh open mind, and originality.

What does for example character A kissing character B tell you without there being a very complex reality as the background?
(Good) Symblism plays with these realities. It's not simply thought-up.

I have a tendacy to dislike those kinds of movies/series/books.

That's the only part that makes sense.

PS - your criticism is unmeaningful if you don't know what you're criticizing.
And yes, you cannot know anything about a topic if you don't research it. A biased mind from the get-go is fine, but don't spurt nonsense.

Yes, you are great, smart and culturally ophisticated and everyone that doesn't like what you like is a redneck, and an uncultured, tasteless barbarian....

Ah yes...the "you know nothing" defense...

Word to the wise - you don't know nothing, so don't presume to talk down to me.
I can watch and enjoy movies and seires with symbolism. But most of the time I don't, because they are crap and the symbolism is forced - trying to much to be artsy/thought provoking at the expense of everything else.

If I wanted a deep insight into the human mind, I would have read a book about psychology.

So please, jsut drop it. I have no desire to debate this with you or anyone else.

Yeah, sorry about that. Didn't mean it so.
I'm not more culturally sophisticated than you.
And enjoying not-so-mind-expanding (mind the self-irony) stuff is fine, it doesn't show anything about sophistication or greatness.

edit: you watch japanese animation, and that has very often metaphors and symbolism going on, even in the more mainstream titles. The whole language presupposes such a thing. So if enjoying depth in animation is a good thing, you're all good.

That's the only part that makes sense.

As to the bolded part - most of the time, yes. Not always. And if it is, I find it amusing - I simply don't get people who feel insulted or touched by good-willing pretentiousness.

As to the "the show is too deep for me" - well that wasn't the thing. You get to criticize the show - but don't talk as if all symbolism was meaningless or moreso, arrogant.

You seem to enjoy the irony. You talked down someone's favorite show by calling it a "sheer and utter garbage" in the first place and you expected them to simply "drop it?"

Perhaps you can contribute something by enlightening everyone how the Evangelion creators "filled in the holes with pseudo-psychology" by "sprinkling philosophy on a story that doesn't stand on its own" instead of getting all defensive.

@Cloud

Because you like anime? Perhaps it is to read Ghost, Some Geth, Arch1e, JReezy and Ragin's comments and news on viewings?

Sorry bout the arguing, it really might seem as bickering at this point.

Yeah he is! He's not nearly as shy and meek as he was in the start of the series.

Indeed. He used to have his eyes as slits a lot of times. The fact that they're actually open now definitely signifies a change in his attitude.

I stalled out on Ergo Proxy on episode 16. Just can't find a reason to finish it. I liked it a lot more when it was in the city for some reason. Had a noire feeling. Now it feels like avant garde, and I'm just not into that.

Soronnar loves irony, that is a fact.=]

Oh and one more thing, the new One Piece movie is going to have two Avril Lavigne songs.

Avril Lavegne? Wow, I didn't see that one coming. I bet the Japanese fans will eat that up, she is still popular there.

The most interesting thing to me is that she's apparently an OP fan. If she's written letters to Oda then it's probably true, so more power to her. She'll take it seriously, so I'll have no complaints unless it's used poorly.

Writing her name in the same bombastic subtitle format that Oda's been using since the Post-Marineford arc in the scan's kinda cute.

Insulted? No, not insulted. Bored, repulsed... maybe.

Touched? Wouldn't that describe you? If the show touched you I mean...and apaprently it did.

Technicly I was speaking of pseuo-philospohical/mind f*** shows as a whole not only EVE.

And yeah, I do think I'm allowed to speak my oppinion wihout having to go into long debates to justify it to you or anyone else.

No.
I have better things to do than analyze the work I don't care about (written by a writer that was commited no less).

After years of searching, I finally found Vampire Hunter D the movie. Along with Bloodlust.

It and Hellsing are great works dealing with similar ideas. Though the first Vampire Hunter movie had some pretty bad english VA -- save for a few scenes and all of Kirk Thornton's moments -- and some cheesy lines, but I still love it all the same and think it's a good movie for its time.

After Bloodlust, I'm going to rewatch Hellsing -- as I only ever managed to watch the first 11-13 episodes when I found it three or four years ago.

Real inquisitors were basically the worst type of troll imaginable, given power.

As to anime - I heard Hunter X Hunter is going to suck once it reached OVAs. May I have your opinion on it, whomever is acquainted (some geth?)?
