I felt like a show like 'Heroic Age' deserved a review so here's what I got.
 
There really aren't any spoilers (I think) but I'm using the tag anyway to shorten the length of the post.

'Heroic Age' is a space opera that takes place on a distant future where humanity, known as the Iron Tribe, faces extinction at the hands of a more advanced civilization known as the Silver Tribe. But how did we get to this point? Some history first.
 
Long ago, there was a civilization called the Golden Tribe who had the power to create worlds and manipulate time. They encouraged other civilizations to follow in their footsteps and explore the universe and three answered their call: the Bronze, Silver, and Heroic tribes. However, it wasn't long before the Heroic Tribe wreaked havoc upon the universe, destroying thousands of planets and stars, for they had power second only to that of the Golden Tribe. As a result, the Golden Tribe punished the Heroic Tribe, containing their essences in gems and handed these gems to five beings who would be known as 'nodos.' These beings would enter contracts, each containing a number of clauses called "labours," and they would be bound by these contracts until all labours were fulfilled.
 
Just as the Golden Tribe decided to leave the universe, humanity also answered the call and was named the Iron Tribe. Nonetheless, before leaving, the Golden Tribe left the Silver and Iron Tribes with prophecies. The Iron Tribe's in particular foretold their eventual discovery of the fifth nodos, the most powerful of them all, and how it would help humanity claim its rightful place in the universe. Soon after their departure, the Bronze Tribe attacked Earth and nearly wiped out humanity, with the remaining survivors seeking refuge among the stars, only to be continuously hunted down by the combined might of the Bronze and Silver Tribes.
 
The introduction of the first episode alone does a superb job setting the background in 2.5 minutes with the exquisite musical theme that will be recurring throughout the series. I cannot speak for the OST since I have yet to listen to it but the main theme is perfect, and I don't use that word lightly. Often a series' main theme is about the best it can deliver but it's either too short or it may have bits you don't particularly like. Heroic Age's main theme is 5-minutes long and, for my part, it's perfect throughout. It manages to convey the majesty and the epic scale of a space opera and even reminded me of LotGH. This song is Heroic Age.
  

 
The series opens with the human ship Argonaut, led by Princess Dhianeila, finding the last of the nodos and prophesied saviour of humanity, a human boy named Age. Thus begins the epic journey to save mankind from extinction and discover their destiny.
 
You can see the appeal in terms of its story. There's a mystery at its core that is the reason why the Golden Tribe decided to simply leave one day and what they might have foreseen for the civilizations they were leaving behind. This mystery remains the heart of the matter even as the Argonaut and its crew face off against the Bronze and Silver tribes time and again in space battles that are more akin to skirmishes and which inevitably come to an end every time Age's involved, prompting the Silver Tribe to use the other nodos against him. I've read a few comments on how the battle footage is re-used quite a few times but, if this is so, I clearly didn't notice and it didn't impede my enjoyment. There's also some politics involved as there are factions in the Iron and Silver tribes who lobby for either a state of conflict or peace.
 
As for the characters, I'm afraid I'm not knowledgeable enough to use terms such as tsundere or the like so I'll use my own words. I once wrote that what I loved about 'Legend of the Galactic Heroes' is that it was the only anime I'd watched that had actual people. That remains the case. The characters in 'Heroic Age' are less people and more ideas/ideals, sometimes to the point of being caricaturesque.
 
For instance, the Princess is pretty much an unfaltering beacon of faith and hope and for all purposes perfect, or pristine rather. Her brothers, on the other hand, are the typical (caricaturesque) case of the 'villains' who are bad because they have an unhealthy combination of pride, power, and ambition, to the point of them not being quite believable. I suppose part of the problem stems from us not knowing a lot (anything really) about how humanity operates in this far future. They clearly have some kind of monarchy, and the Princess and her brothers have power, and there's some sort of council, but the interaction between these elements is not explored thoroughly.
 
So, yes, for the most part, the characters in 'Heroic Age' are probably one-dimensional, or idealized, with a few exceptions (Iolaous, for one). I didn't mind one bit, though, and considering the show is loosely based on Greek mythology it's likely this idealized tone is intended. I was initially thrown off regarding the show's tone by a few characters though. The twins, Tail and Mail, provide some levity that I wasn't entirely sure fit until I saw them interact with Age. Likewise, Nilval's rather ample bosom and revealing military outfit felt out of place, particularly since nobody else wears a similar uniform throughout the series.
 
The show's only 26-episodes long and I can attest there's not a single filler episode. Like I mentioned in the beginning, the series starts with the discovery of the fifth nodos and every episode after that one brings something to the table, ending in a climax that, while it may leave you scratching your head a bit, is every bit as arresting and fulfilling an ending as you could hope it to be.
 
If I had to rate it, I'd give it a 9/10 (indeed, that's the rating I used in MyAnimeList). It's not a 'masterpiece' (10) because: a) I don't really use that rating (unless I finish watching LotGH in which case I might use it); and b ) there are a few things that take the rating down a notch, like the ones I mentioned above or the art which, while perfectly adequate, is not very detailed.
 
Before I forget, I should say I watched the English dub and it was excellent. Sure, Age's voice may not have been my choice but it does convey the idea of his childlike innocence (though maybe a tad too much). On the other hand, I now simply can't watch the show's intro unless it's voiced by Caitlin Glass (the VA for Princess Dhianeila).
 
I definitely recommend watching it. If you remain unconvinced, the least you can do is watch the introductory 2.5 minutes of the first episode and see whether it's something you could enjoy:
