Vampire Hunter D was TERRIBLE! The story was SO stupid!

It's 10 thousand years after the bombs drop and for some reason the world is now overrun with VAMPIRES! What is the purpose of a post-apocalyptic setting? It makes no sense.

Oh yeah, and then there is this super strong vampire D is contracted to kill and all hope seems lost until it's revealed he's actually the son of count Dracula then he gets OMG powers and wins, lol!

I watched the sequel too and that one was even worse.

Right, may I ask with what purpose you're here in this thread? Are you just here to talk trash about anime? Or are you actually honestly interested in trying out some new, good anime series? In the latter case, check out the other titles I listed in my previous post.

I believe the thread is titled the "Anime and manga discussion thread" not "Anime and manga worship thread."

And how is (nothing but) talking trash about specific anime series and anime in general "anime and manga discussion"?

This thread is for people who like anime annd want to discuss their favorite series with each other. You know, give each other tips for which series he/she should watch and other stuff like that.

Yup, it's all good.

But as to NGE's (too) obviously pretentious biblical references and things like vampires, that's sort of what I meant under "weirdness" (it is weirdly pretentious in NGE I'd think - why else would you be bothered by it) and "getting to understand the acquired taste and cultural stuff".

Pretentiousness in itself is a very good thing. Going overboard (in a sense it becomes weird) can maybe bother some people - but I'd say it should bother only if it's obviously false and implies ill logic.

Japanese have an affinity towards liking B-movie type over-the-top. "Camp" is the proper term I'd say. I think the underappreciation of anime would come mostly from not being able to dig that.

But yeah, there are more "normal" series. I'd be very interested on your opinion about the ones I recommended on the previous page.

Before I tell you why, how far into the arc are you?

I read through chapter 241 yesterday, so 242. I know for certain that Luffy will kick this 'God' guy's arse in the end in a silly way (Water Luffy lvls of silliness I'm betting), and then there'll be a big party held, because I hear that's what always happens at the end of each of these massive in scope arcs (which isn't a bad thing, IMO).

I got a good chuckle out of this. So, is there anything you don't think sucks about anime?

Skypiea is the best arc.

Skypiea might be your personal favorite arc, but I didn't like it all that much. In my opinion Skypiea was far too long and too little happened.

Personally, I prefer the Water 7 + Enies Lobby arc(s), or the CP9 arc as I like to call them together. The CP9 arc really builds up the plot and tension quite nicely. A lot of epic, emotional, funny and cool stuff happenes during the CP9 arc.

Skypiea(with Jaya) is everything that makes One Piece, well One Piece. That and a ton of stuff did happened. Also if you look at One Piece as a whole, Skypiea is not that long.

Water 7 was great, Enies Lobby was kind of bad. Robin's backstory, Franky, Sogeking and what happens with Merry are the only good things from Enies Lobby.

It gets girls like this to dress up in whorish anime costumes and I'm thankful for that at least.

Which is quite a lot of good stuff. Which makes Enies Lobby rather good.

I also loved Thriller Bark a lot, and Alabasta, and the Pirate Wars. Heck, I love ALL of the One Piece arcs! Well, except for the fillers, they're often "meh". Though I did love the Foxy Pirates / Davy Back Fights fillers. Afro Luffy! :o

Bikinis and video game cosplay is anime now? I'm not complaining though, just saying.

Well Japanese video games typically have a lot of anime-esque lameness to them. So much so to the point where they're becoming indistinguishable.

The girl in the pictures is Jessica Nigri, google her.  Does tons of sexy cosplay.

Only Japanese games I like are the ones that don't feel like Japanese games like Dark Souls and Dragon's Dogma.

The original one on the MSX?  Slightly before my time.  Played Metal Gear Solid though.  Was pretty cool until Liquid Snake started rambling on about recessive genes and cloning nonsense.  Metal Gear Solid 2 is when they jumped the shark though, WOW that game was bad.  Especially that one X-men reject looking girl who couldn't get shot and the bisexual vampire.  Only in Japan does stupid stuff like that happen.

Once again, I fail to see how it's stupid rather than acquired taste.

But Enies Lobby's main villain came off like a Bleach  villain... Then the fact that Enies Lobby itself was just a battle arena, it took a lot away from the good stuff.

But I am with you, I like almost all the arcs. The only one I dislike is the Fishman Island arc.

Also DBF is not filler, the anime added some filler sure but who cares about that.

Hey Mushroom, have you ever read any superhero comics from America?

Because Japan is not the only place that has "stupid stuff".

I don't like comic book crap either.  I watched The Dark Knight trilogy and loved it because I was thinking "hey!  Here is a comic book movie that doesn't feel like a comic book movie!"

I thought I was a Batman fan and then I ended up playing Batman:Arkham City and it was so overflowing with campy comic book BS I quit after just a few hours of gameplay.  Then I ended up finding out that it's apparently The Dark Knight trilogy which "betrays" Batman's legacy.  Consider me a traitor then.

So basically things more grounded in reality, REALLY grounded in reality, are what you like.

If that's the only reason you liked the movies... Well you have my pity.

Also you quit a really good game.;)

No, I don't make such restrictions.  I like fantasy settings but a good fantasy story has to have it's own set of rules and limitations.  Anime never does and as a result everything in Anime and Japanese games just seems random and stupid.

Part of my dislike of Arkham City is also due to gameplay preference.  For instance, I do not like GTA-style open world games.  I feel all the travelling from point A to point B just to complete a linear storyline is filler.  Might as well just divide the game into levels.

Tons of manga/anime fantasy settings have sets of rules and limitations. Nen from Hunter x Hunter comes to mind.

You do know that Assassin's Creed is a GTA-style open world game series?
