Has to do with no planning whatsoever being done on Reuenthal's part regarding his face off against him. There is absolutely no strategy / tactics at all mentioned. He just directly goes and confronts Mittermeyer in hopes of defeating him head on, and how would he when he knows he will be heavily outnumbered and already knows Mittermeyer is a formidable foe. Addition to taking zero account how he will proceed to face off against Reinhard were he to somehow defeat Mittermeyer. 

 

So that's generally my issue with it. Also, the battle is rather lackluster.

I find that kind of thinking flawed. By adding other external factors you can change the battle in ANYONES favor. Hell, let's just have Gilgamesh drugged, tied down and stripped naked and let him battle like that. How is that a good indicator of his strength? It's not, which is why I find such extreme factors dishonest.

Fact is, that Lancer and Saber met in a open and fair duel at full strength and Lancer was winning. His skills and noble Phantasm are just more suited for duels and 1-on-1 battles. Rider would have defeated him easily. It's just how it is.

 

Saber is a well-balanced class and Arturia is powerful, but let's face it, Lancer would have won.

 

And Gil vs. Saber track record?

He bloody murdered her at the fight at the docks (fate route). He murdered he in Zero.

He only lost in Fate because Plot Induced Stupidity. He had his entire treasury to draw upon, but he didn't. But to be honest, if he always fought cautiously and using all tools at his disposal, no one would ever touch him. He is just OP.

You seem to have a habit of using farcical illustration to point out a fact, to which I personally find it hard to take this discussion seriously. Yes, Lancer was winning in their first fight and he would have won had it continued. I already stated that this was the case, never did I argue otherwise. Lancer is a more formidable foe in toe-to-toe fights, which is quite evident both in Zero and Stay Night. Fighting Lancer head on and expecting odds to be in your favor is wishful thinking. However, you are forgetting Kiritsugu is aware of this fact and used Saber and Irisviel as a diversion to take out Kayneth--which apparently for all we know he would have succeeded with hadn't Rider interrupted. But there you go, he was unlucky. He had to adapt to the situation. Even in the next round, he didn't simply allow Saber to duke it out with Lancer, even though the favors were greater on the former's part. 

 

The Holy Grail War and its usage of the Servants are situational. It is stupid to limit yourself to internal factors I find. Even when you have a powerful Servant like Saber, Kiritsugu uses all matter of aspects to get an edge, which is a smarter thing to do. You seem to rely on the fact that strength solely lies to who is the more powerful in a head-to-head fight. Fair enough, though I personally find it to be a very one sided way of thinking. But if we were to use that as our thesis, I do agree that Gilgamesh and Lancer and Rider are stronger, to which I have already pointed out. But I find there are other aspects to take into consideration, and not simply who punches the biggest blow. 

 

Don't see why you continue to limit yourself to Arturia when I keep mentioning the Saber class and its track record. As I've stated twice already, Saber the class, has managed to reach the final battleground in all five wars, hence its track record and why I half-jokingly claimed that it is the "insta win" class. My meaning was not that "Saber is the best class and all other classes are inferior."
