I'm only basing this on what I've read of the manga version of Kaiji, but the only real similarity I can think of is that they both have a serious and dark mood with people abusing power, value of trust in your allies under tough circumstances etc.
Check out the two first episodes or so of Rainbow and you'll have a pretty good sense on what's to come and whether you like it or not.
I watched the first episode. And it was indeed better than Kaiji, in my opinion. The characters and plot may seem a bit simple, but there does seem to be some good light to it. The "Bro" character seemed to have some genuine dignity and other great qualities to him - and though all characters but the good guys are made to seem impossibly evil and perverse, the main ones seem to form a bit more interesting bunch. Unlike Kanji, where all, without exception, were unredeemable losers and idiots.
Rainbow has some kind-hearted guys there, and a moving setting. (reminds of Dickens??)
Still, not entirely my thing.
And oh, sorry to anyone who enjoyed Kaiji, for calling the characters there "stupid" - but you've got to admit, there's no-one with an intelligent mind-set in the series. That's kind of a prerequisite for a good seriously taken series - that at least some characters would be not one-dimensionally unintelligent. In my eyes, the more smart and/or psychologically feasible, interesting and quirky characters in a series, the better.
