Fate/Stay Night

A very satisfying finale for the first cour of UBW! The show took up several causes and aspects into account, and managed to leave them in a gratifying state that is left open for further developments to take place for the second season. A solid cliffhanger for certain. 

 

Episode 12 certainly showcases really the essence of what Fate/Stay Night is as a show, and how it distinguishes from Fate/Zero. While both shows are similar in terms of delving into psychological and philosophical conflicts and themes--in addition to being heavily action based--a prominent feature that separates them is their narrative element. Zero is blatantly ultraviolet in many ways and is a core feature in the story to grasp the seriousness of the War, while Stay Night on other hand utilizes a bigger focus on taking into account "every day life" situations of the main characters, which is a more "light-hearted" take on the conflict that they face. Stay Night is more a show about socialization--in which characters associate in school surroundings and has a stronger grasp on disseminating ideological beliefs (while rudimentary, it manages to convey it in a consistent manner within the limits of the plot). 

 

One needs to have a different mindset when experiencing Stay Night, and if situations like Shirou, Rin and Saber going on a date is not a set piece that is to ones own liking, then the show is not one for you perhaps. Personally I am a fan of the concept myself, since it makes the story and its character more relatable. Having the show taking into account small scenes that revolve around every day life activities is a nice mechanic to convey that the characters are kids and that there is more to it than the conflict that lies before them. It is humorous and cute, but still managed to serve an underlying purpose, which is what I like about Stay Night.

 

When Caster appeared, that was were things really got interesting, however. Caster is quite a capable adversary. My initial fear in the show was that she would easily fall into that character trope that likes to boast but never actually utilizes on their threats. Thankfully this is not the case. She is certainly someone that is always trying to be a step ahead of everyone and is a lot more pragmatic than others in her quest for the Grail. What intrigues me about her is her method of accomplishing her goal. She doesn't bound herself to the regulations of the War and is actively trying to seek a different approach, one which sounds more practical (though morally condemning, depending on your viewpoints). Though that depends entirely on the basis that what she is doing is actually the truth and not full of sh*t, who harbors ulterior motives. If the former, I can certainly respect her as a character. 

 

Though her actions also raises a small problem within the narrative. The concept of the Holy Grail War and its workings are laid bare in the beginning, but with enough information left ambiguous for the show to give exposition on as it moves along. While a workable mechanic to give the show proper pacing, it being devoid from a proper order and structure makes the plot revelations surrounding the Grail quite convenient just for the sake of raising different conflicts for the characters. The show should make a stronger distinction of the Grail's workings is largely surrounded in mystery. Still, the show does a relatively good job without relying on plot convenience.

 

The face off at the bridge was certainly the highlight of the episode, and it was without a doubt great on so many levels. Shirou finally coming into a direct conflict with where he stands with his ideology was a situation that I was hoping for would surface within the story in some capacity, and I am pleased that it did. Shirou belief has relied on the concept of being able to save everyone, a concept that was challenged by both Kiritsugu and Archer, to which Shirou has dismissed on respectively. He has stubbornly stood for his naive ideology so far simply as a means to fight for what he thinks is right. And now when he faced Caster is where it shows that his belief system doesn't hold weight at all--he decided to save the person closest to him instead of the many that Caster offered. Shirou's motives are inherently selfish, since he can't personally accept the principal of Caster's totalitarian mindset no matter what, and is willing to give away his arm and ignore the consequences, simply as a means to save Fuji-nee's life. This is the underlying problem that Shirou struggles with. Since his ideology is a borrowed one, it is not a concept that he truly understands and does it simply as an obligation. Shirou believes following upon it on a superficial level will be enough for him, without knowing how to act on it and to what level. He has now been properly challenged and this is the outcome of it all. I am very excited to witness in what direction it will go now in the next cour.

 

Additionally, I really loved what transpired on the bridge when it comes to Saber. This time around it is she who "betrays" her Master, which is a stark contrast to what happened back in Zero with Kiritsugu, and I just love the reflection of it. Glorious!

 

Well to sum it all up--this episode and the season as a whole--Fate/Stay Night was a indeed a solid one, and while its different concepts may not appeal to everyone, one cannot deny everything hits the right frequency in in a very coherent manner. And now as the year turns we start the wait for the second season, so that we can finally witness what will transpire for these group of characters, till they meet their inescapable, yet self-driven, Fate (yeah sorry couldn't resist myself there).

That show is rubbish imo. The books are far better, and the records themselves are even more so.

 

Books generally tend to be better than the show / movie. That doesn't make the show rubbish however. Personally I didn't find the Romance of the Three Kingdoms that appealing. Not only is it more romanticized and dramatized than the show, but it also portrays Cao Cao as a clear villain. Not something I'm personally a fan of.

 

Man ep12 is fantastic.  The new scenes where fantastic, even the change they made to the big scene was fantastic. Also the ending with the characters

Planning on reading the VN, but I have decided to experience the Fate route first (which has already taken me a month and I am only in the very first few days) and with my schedule quite busy next year, I wouldn't be surprised if I'll just end up experiencing the anime in April.

Hot damn! That was a solid episode of UBW for sure! I started enjoying this route over Fate early on, but never expected it to be completely different in terms of narrative. Feels like I am experiencing Fate/Stay Night for the first time. Simply amazing.

Fully agree, and that was a very emotional scene. Can't believe what Saber is going through right now. Wonder how UBW will showcase who Saber is. I mean, people have zero clue who her identity is for people coming in to the series for the first time.
