But as for anime, at times it is because it's a "freedom-style" of writing, other times it is to make you think the character is a girl. And many other reasons, like look at Togashi's work, he likes LGBT stuff from what I know.

Most of the time it isn't about artistic expression, at least in the shows I've seen. It seems to just be a popular thing to do, even in JRPGs. I guess it makes it easier to make multiple characters if you don't tie yourself down to gender, but I think there are more creative ways to do so.
The rise in popularity with screamo is what led to so many girly men today, lol.

So, I watched the first three episodes of Sword Art Online, and I gotta admit; at first I thought it was rly dumb. Like the premise and how they introduced the sense of conflict was kinda cheesy in my opinion. But as I'm watching I'm finding it easier to let that go and kinda think about it as it comes. That and the fact that it has some of the best animation (both style and quality wise) I've seen are making it a pretty good watch so far.
