So I finished Arslan Senki. It being 6 episodes (the first two of which were an hour long) and me taking so long to finish should say enough about it.
The story has the potential to be absolutely f*cking amazing. Though it's no Legend of the Galactic Heroes in terms of its focus on politics, it does enough so that you don't feel underwhelmed.
In fact, if you could compare the politics of Arslan to anything it's ASOIAF. It doesn't reach the complexity of the subject, but neither does it fall short of anything below mediocre.
War (as in, strategy and tactics) is given more focus than politics, and you can definitely see the resemblance to LOTGH there. Overall though, it feels more like a heroic fantasy than a political drama with the main dudes taking out other dudes like they were weak-sh*t.
However... in everything else, the entire thing felt underdeveloped in key areas of development, pacing and characterisation. It gets far better as it goes along, but it never reaches that level of "wow" that LOTGH did.
Arslan himself feels like a less insane Danaerys as he wants to abolish slavery, but isn't such a compelling character. All I could get from the anime is that he's a "good guy," very idealistic and... hardly suffers the consequences. Sure, they do talk about how changing society will hurt him somehow, but unlike Dany, you never see any of it, hell, they don't even talk about it outside "ifs" and "maybes."
The rest of the characters are also... eh. I could rant on and on, but despite them not being terrible, they aren't exactly great either. The "bad guy" is obviously grey, but he's neither interesting or profound. He's a dude who's supposed to be the true heir to Arslan's throne and has an astute Hound-level fear of fire. There's also this chick that I have no idea why she's following Arslan so loyally... I mean, yeah, she could have become loyal to him after following him a while, but the series doesn't really do anything to show us.
All in all, it's a clumsy story. I think that's the best way to put it.
Of course, this is an adaptation of a series of novels that's still being written today. It's only 6 episodes and I'm sure there's a lot more to it than the old anime gives.
So for the sake of comparing material, I'll read the manga by Himoru and see where that goes.
What's nice about it though (and this is really cool imo because anime doesn't do this enough) is its Middle-Eastern setting. I read up of in and I think it's based off Persian Mythology. It's refreshing... kind of like JoJo. The Immortal Fairy Araki certainly knows his stuff.
So is it worth a watch? Yeah. It is... I suppose. If you have nothing else to watch.
I'll read the manga now and compare the material.
