As to romance - I'm enjoying Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun thus far. Great romance/comedy in its own!

Underwhelming.
Really didn't go the places it needed to to make it memorable, which is a shame.
Who'd have thought a story in which the premise "you die in the game, you die for REAL" would be so tame?
SAO in short is:
"Oh my god! Kirito-san is such a stud! F**k me I'll have your baby!"
Hilariously melodramatic adventure of Gary-stu, catered towards MMO geeks.
But hey, it succeeds in what it does. That's really all that matters, you know.
Writing? Plot? No, my e-penis is the size of a tower. All is good in the world.
And quite frankly there's nothing wrong with that.
Just like there's nothing wrong with sh!tty written porn.
SAO is insanely popular, much in the same reason Twilight is.

Maybe, but minus the glittering vampires/little girls.

Though I'd say Twilight isn't loved because of bad writing per se.
The demographic and escapism are really the reasons in themselves.
(for all I know you're right if Twilight was about simplistic escapism - that could be a reason for liking SAO. In this case it's the pure "awesomeness" though, not so much "frustrating feelings" or such)

@ThePinkFozz I i thought you read One Piece too? You should know that after the crappy Fishman Island arc, the series got back to what it's good at.
Misread that as ThePinkFonz then.

Not saying that you're not entitled to your opinion of course, because you are and I get that some people wouldn't like it.
I do have issue with some of your observations though. I wouldn't really call it harem based too, if ever manage to watch past the first few episodes you'll see what I mean. There is hardly anything porn like in it at all, so I'm not really too sure if we're watching the same series?
Oh yeah, I used to read One Piece, and I've heard from a lot of people it gets better after the Fishman arc. I just didn't pick it up again after that. I don't know why, I just got bored

@ThePinkFoxx I was just saying that SAO is popular for the same reason Twilight is. I also didn't say SAO was like porn, I was saying there is nothing wrong with liking SAO or sh!tty written porn.

Because Sword Art Online goes a little overboard with the romance.
Overboard with the romance?!?!?!
I'm only 8 episodes in, to say such a thong could even be possible is just....I'll have to see this to believe it.

I'm sure there's been more than 10k sales of Kochikame in the past 1 year.
They probably just don't have the updated numbers. It's kinda hard to track it when you have nearly 200 volumes.
Double checked, the figure is just lifted off wikipedia, and that entry was updated 2011. So yeah. They just don't know the 2012 figures.
Geez. OP sold more volumes in the last year than Hakusho, Kenshin or Hunter have in their entire lifetimes, and about as many as Bleach.
And it was just like 2 years ago they were making a HUGE deal out of it hitting the unprecedented 200 million mark with advertisements on the subways and stuff. It'll be at 300 by this time next year easily it seems.
WHY is it having such a ridonculous surge at this point in time?
