Berserk's story hasn't exactly won me over, but the action sequences, dark fantasy vibe, and outright manliness of this show requires me to give it a thumbs up. It's Dark Souls the anime. I'll take it.

I get the feeling it's heading into God of War territory. Terrible power at a terrible price?

Yup. Great characters, good story, impressive visuals, good soundtrack, awesome action scenes, etc.

What's not to like?

Well I've just finished the first part, got to the cliff hanger, and thought, 'what if I go back to the earlier adaptation to find out what happens?'. But I take it the two are very different beasts. I did actually start to watch the original a while back but dropped it after a few episodes. I was surprised by how well Zero and the new adaptation kept me interested actually. 

The 2006 FSN anime made by DEEN focuses on a differen route, so even if you go and watch that one the events that will transpire in the 2014 anime and the 2006 anime will be very different.

 

I recommend waiting till the 2014 anime resumes itself in april 2015.
